Schefter: “Another OC interview for Cowboys TE coach Lunda Wells, as he will meet with the Jets today. It’s his third OC interview this cycle, along with the Steelers and Commanders” Hopefully this isn’t some bullshit Rooney rule interview so that they can move ahead hiring Frank Reich because it looks like actual competent franchises also wanted this guy on board.
If they fired the OC and don't get the guy they fired him for all heads should be on the table on the coaching staff.
"To satisfy the Rooney Rule for an Offensive Coordinator position, NFL teams are required to interview at least one external minority candidate" After this interview, Jets should be able to hire Reich. Should be done within next few days/a week. They might throw a couple of more for show, but this one interview clears path for Reich, who I think is already set to join.
Reich is a has been. Nobody else in the NFL is reaching out to him for interviews for any job as far as I am reading. Glenn basically struck out on every decision he made in year one. At least Engstrand was a young offensive mind who showed some creativity in his playcallling and he worked directly with Ben Johnson. Yes, he did need to get better but he said he learned a lot in year one and with improved personnel we could have some hope that maybe the Jets could run a modern day offense. This team is a total circus and Aaron Glenn is now the ringmaster. Wait and see, next year Woody will fire Glenn midseason after a disastrous start and we will be in the same mess again.......the cycle continues.
More process than opinion of the person. Could be better, but we are tying that hope to he had a few interviews with good franchises.
If Woody hired an offensive head coach, maybe Tanner could have even stayed on with the HC calling plays. That's actually a pretty normal arrangement. MILF ended up doing that. But if you are an OC, to have another guy, who is technically below you call plays, that Hackett/Downing arrangement is not going to work and never has, so he bolted. Glenn should have been fired along with Wilks, and London and new offensive coach should have been brought in and made the rest of the decisions. This wasn't a difficult decision. But now we need to hope Reich comes in and reverts back to his early Indy days from 5+ years ago. And without a QB... It's not looking good. Maybe we will sign Carson Wentz as a free agent. He was injured last Nov, surgery on Nov 12. Not sure when he is ready, at least 6 months, could be 9.
It definitely wouldn't. Reich wouldn't have been an inspired hiring 5 years ago. He's certainly not an inspired hire now. SPOILER ALERT: He won't. This would be such a typical Jets move that I bet the Jets would be so impressed with themselves for doing it. Yeah, let's go out and reunite an OC and QB who were terrible the last time they were together five years later, after both have been in the league sparingly since, and hope that will somehow yield results that are in any way acceptable. Given how bad of an idea this would be, I'm sure the Jets have already put this plan in writing in pen and are moving full steam ahead towards it.
Acceptable would be a functioning NFL offense. The #1 overall pick is where we're headed, so I'm embracing it, but it's not where we should be trying to go as a franchise. Wasting an entire season like this or, as I've heard it put elsewhere, hitting the "simulate" button like this was Madden just to skip this season, is a terrible decision by ownership and will not be good for the franchise in the near or the short term. If the actual goal of ownership is to get the #1 overall pick next offseason, then hiring Reich and pairing him with Wentz would be one surefire way of getting there. But, then again, they could have kept the coaching staff from last year intact and probably achieved the same result without having to spend the extra money or expose themselves to further embarrassment, so I doubt that this is an intentional play for the #1 pick.
I was joking about #1 being acceptable, but I suspect it will actually become the hope shortly after the season begins and we will be in tank mode again after 1st few weeks of the season. As far as Wentz, the sad thing is, he might be one of the better options we have. Don't need to give up assets, and he wasn't as bad as usual with Reich before, even his last year there. Plus last season before he got hurt he was as good as any other scrub we can get really. It really sucks Moore went back to school. With Reich here, from the QB development perspective, it might not have been the worst situation for him. But as of now we are probably looking at Wentz and maybe someone like Simpson/Nassmeyer, etc...
As far as I'm concerned, we're in tank mode now unless something drastic happens (i.e. the Raiders pass on Mendoza, Glenn is fired or resigns, or they manage to land a brilliant OC that we're not even thinking about at the moment). As far as Wentz being our best option, he might be, I don't know. It's a sad list of free agents that are available, that's for sure. I'd rather kick the tires on Teddy Bridgewater and see if he's interested, but that's not without its risks as well, since he's been in and out of football the past couple of years. If not, trade a mid-round pick for Jameis Winston if he could be gotten from the Giants (this would be the best option, IMO). Outside the box, since Phillip Rivers apparently has interest in coaching at the NFL level, sign him as the QB and make him the OC as well.
Yeah there are some parallels to the offseason before Saleh's final year where it was clear he had to go, but at least then we had hope that Rodgers might pull a rabbit out of his hat. Going into Gase's final year, there was a least a small glimmer of hope that maybe Darnold would turn it around. I can't recall a season as unexciting as next year's is likely to be. There's nothing that inspires hope. No QB, lame duck coach. Yuck.
2025 I don't think I pulled it out of my arse, but it was widely expected the jets were going to be picking in the top 5 of this draft by pundits and fans. It just is painful to which it unfold and people will be going just as crazy next off season if we are in the same spot.
oh man I am on that boat. This is THE lowest I have EVER felt about this team. By far! And I was there for all of Kotite, Gase, Idzik...even the mid 1990s crapola. But I've NEVER been THIS low. I have ZERO hope. ZERO. Even with all these picks, which should provide quite a bit of hope, I have none. Yay! We have the #2 overall. This is a one QB draft. We have a coach who has done unprecedented things in his first year, he gets to scapegoat basically his entire staff, and yet the motherfucker is STILL here! AND he's an arrogant prick too! He tells us to "Trust me" because "I know what it takes to win" and yet he can't articulate what the fucking so called "Jets Brand of football" even is. And worse yet, he gets mad when they ask him! Like WTF! When you are setting NFL all time futility records, when you are a former DB and DC and you get ZERO picks in an entire season and only 3 takeaways, when you are outscored by historical margins, it's just crazy that he gets to scapegoat his chosen assistants and his handpicked QB and Woody buys it. I just can't. It's so clear Woody hasn't ever run anything in his fucking entitled life. If he actually ran a business this way, it'd have gone bankrupt. But here we all are, supporting our team that many of us have rooted for our entire lives, so he doesn't give a fuck. I don't know, venting for sure, and probably speaking to the choir here, but back to the point, I have NEVER felt this hopeless about our team in my life. And I've been watching the games since 1979 man... brutal as long as Woody is calling the shots, this will never change...we may as well get used to that. You'd hope that just by sheer chance, he'd have stumbled on a decent GM or HC, but he hasn't because he keeps hiring the same fucking coach over and over and over. ugh...he just doesn't get anything...
This season was still kind of an unknown though because Glenn was a new hire. I didn't think we'd be good but there was a chance Glenn would be a culture changer and we'd be competitive. There's nothing to hang our hats on for next year though.
Having a 5-6 win season to take us out of top QBs again and Glenn selling this improvement to Woody and staying another year is not exciting enough?
Really can't get over the fact that our HC fired our OC because our OC couldn't overcome the QB the HC hand-picked.
