Guess who's left standing in all this bloodbath.. Yep, the Man from Denver has risen from the "new GM" to GM/Pres of football ops. Only one thing remains and we all know what that is and when its gonna happen. The next head to roll will be Glenn's. It was written in the '26 schedule and the unspoken mandate to improve on 3-14. Glenn has now fired almost his entire CS in a attempt to save his job by winning a few more games. I'm not sure its possible to have a worse optic. Once Glenn is gone, it falls to Mougey to pick up the pieces. I have a feeling if anybody can pull this off, it will be Mougey. Woody had to make a drastic move but stay in the background as his reputation is deep in the shitter. The Giants landing Harbaugh forced Woody and the Jet Organization to take desperate measures or be relegated to irrelevancy for the foreseeable future. Today's firing just shortened Glenn's rope by several games as he won't get the entire season to turn the jets around. With an entirely new staff, its almost a certainty the Jets will be in the shitter one more time which will spell the end of the Aaron Glenn Era. I'm not saying Mougey engineered any of this. I am saying he was smart enough to play the long game and let Glenn hang himself with his own rope. Now for all intent and purposes, Mougey is king. We all hope he's up to the job or else as has been said: "Let go of the rope before we hang ourselves with it.."
I don't know if I'm ready to believe that there is some intelligent design behind all of this. The Jets have always hung out around Occam's Boulevard and it usually turns out they were just making shit up as they went along
Didn’t Glenn refer to Mougey as his sidekick in his introductory press conference? It’s like the detective in movie Usual Suspects asking the cripple Kevin Spacey, in what world are you smarter than me? Mougey is Kaiser Soze.
It's really incredible we decided to give the HC full power over the GM right as we hired an all-time bad HC and a seemingly competent GM. It would be hard to run a franchise less effectively if you tried.
I agree a billion percent. Mougey never got to hire his own coach, and Woody isn't going to allow Glenn to collect $10M a year for the next few years, so this is the next best thing. Mougey sets it up so that next year, Glenn is out and he can (hopefully) lure in a coach with the promise of a franchise QB and some draft capital. If the Jets draft a QB this year, I'm going to SCREAM. All the strategic pieces are in place to give Glenn enough rope to hang himself and the only thing that screws that up is drafting a QB. If they do, we can check back in the early 2030s to see if they're competitive yet. Sent from my SM-X820 using Tapatalk
I said to friends of mine earlier today that Frank Reich was being hired as the OC so he could take over as the head coach next year after Glenn gets fired. The more I think about it, it's the only thing that makes sense. Even though the Jets never do anything that makes sense, this would be epic even for them. Hiring a coach, having him fire his entire staff after year 1, hiring a new staff, then firing the coach and hoping to attract a new coach with a staff already in place? What are you going to do, fire the entire staff again? So the only thing that makes sense is that one of the coordinators that's being hired is being groomed as a head coach in the event that Aaron Glenn fails, which we know he will. Either that, or the Jets are doubling down and committing to Aaron Glenn for a couple of years regardless of the results next year, which I guess wouldn't surprise me either. Christ I hate this team. Now all he had to do is hit a few homers in the draft. 8 picks in the top 55 over 2 years. We need 6 starters and 3 pro bowlers from those picks. It would also be nice to hit on a pick past the 3rd round for once. Looking at his past draft. He’s a big school drafting guy. That tells me he’s a high floor type talent evaluator. It’s definitely a safe method.
I don't think Woody can decide not to pay Glenn the rest of his contract. If he fires him he continues to pay him. The Raiders currently are paying 4 former head coaches.
1. Separating the two and it can be hard. Talent wise he added Brigs, Brownlee and Phillips. Low key moves all three contributed or look like players who can help. 2. First two picks Membou and Taylor look like NFL starters. 3. AZ Thomas and Malachai Moore look like starters, Maugoia a contributor for a few years. 4. Baron and Smith good possibility of being cut. 5. Seeing the team at 0-7 and probably needing close to a full rebuild he took blue chip players and traded them for higher lottery picks. We'll see what those lottery picks become but knowing we never really knocked it down this is a good thing. We'll see what the picks turn into but a good read of the roster. 6. This is the offseason to really judge Mougey. In free agency can he get players who can help and contribute. In the draft can he turn two blue chip players (Membou and Taylor) into 4? 7. If he can do that we might be able to support him. 8. Looking at our schedule and talent on this team with an average qb the Jets are lucky to get to 6 wins. Does that save Glenn probably not. Mougey maybe if you start seeing player improvement. Time will tell. Have about 11 months to know but first year return looks good.
My only concern is right now the jets are like the new team in the room. They appear to have zero contacts or relationships in the league and it's showing in the hiring search. Mougey needs to have a coach with his own connections and coaches, which it really doesn't look like he has now.
that was one of the problems with hiring Mougey he was with the same organization for life. they liked that but that also means he has a limited tree of connections
This, in my opinion, is spot on and agree 1000%. AG big bravado attitude and “is my way or the highway” failed drastically on year one. He wanted to do it his way, he picked his staff, he kicked AR to the curb in an arrogant way, he pushed for Fields, defense regressed, and the overall results were disastrous, loosing some of his key players respect along the way. He is now fully on the spot on a do or die situation, and his sphere of influence is much reduced, and hangs solely on the results of this year’s performance on the field. He has to show significant progress. It’s crystal clear, the marriage between AG and Woody responsible for picking him has turned very sour, the environment even more toxic and not remotely a desirable destination. I am of the opinion that Mouge is in full control of the big picture moving forward, and by that I mean sole responsibility for the long term plan for this team. The strategy for this years draft, and free agency moves will be coordinated and approved with Woody directly under the premise that AG is under the microscope, and his job is to show significant progress from last year or he is history. The long term staffing must be developed to acomodare a potential HC change. Is too bad we lost our OC, I felt he had lots of potential and no help from above, snd is even more troublesome to determine how the D will work with AG calling the shots. IMO. 2026 is a year of great concern for this team. A very poor start might be enough to execute a change at the HC position. Look for a senior HC as a potential.
well especially after watching their end of year presser, I think MUCH more highly of Mougey than I do of Glenn. He looked like the adult in the room, and Glenn looked like a dumbass old school coach who can only talk in bullshit generalizations like "Trust Me" and "I know what it takes to win" and "We're going to play our brand of football" but has no fucking explanation of what any of it means...so if you know, please, enlighten us with "what it takes to win". He couldn't articulate anything, just got mad for people daring to question him, the HC. Mougey actually spoke intelligently and thoughtfully. that being said, I think he's been maybe a bit overrated here...and yeah we only have a small sample size, but to me, it's not hard to trade away great players, now to his credit he did get a great return, but JD did very similar as well only he didn't have as many great players to trade. Kind of like when Idzik gets some credit for "fixing our cap"...bullshit...he cut overpaid players like Sanchez and Santonio Holmes...any of US would have done the same. Tearing down is easy. Let's see how he builds. His first draft was I'd say pretty good...not like he drafted probowlers, but some of that may also rest on Glenn's shoulders. Membou and Taylor look like good solid picks, and starters, so that's good...feels like fucking forever since we've had a good second round pick, so kudo's on that. AZ in the third round, I guess he showed some promise when he played, so I'll say there is potential there. The 4th round receiver with no hands was a bust, but it's the 4th round, and we did have trash QB play. I don't know, I'd give his first draft a B I guess...good and a lot of what we needed, but not eyewatering breakout stars yet...again, I'll give him some credit as I think maybe a better coaching staff and certainly a better QB could have gotten more out of Taylor especially...all he did this year was run 5 yard outs. but yeah, given the circumstances, I'd have fired Glenn the day after the season ended but I'd keep Mougey.
Right now it looks like the latter but need to see the moves they make in free agency & the draft to get a clearer picture. It looks like they're hitting the reset button. 2026 in reality is year 1. If they're smart they'll use all their draft picks, draft one or two QBs, go into 2026 with one of the youngest rosters in the NFL. That will buy them more time. But with the Jets you never know it may look one way now then in free agency & the draft they make moves that make one wonder if they know what they're doing.
