This mentality, which is shared by our owner, is a big reason we've been such losers for so long. Be ruthlessly focused on winning or you're not going to have a good team. The league is too competitive for it to be any other way. Kraft is a great foil to Woody in this sense. All he cares about is winning. The moment any coach/player/exec isn't contributing to that, they're gone.
Two things can be true at once though. The roster can be garbage but the coach can be too. A team with an offensive line that starts all year together with two good running backs should win more than 3 games sort of just on principle by playing conservative, running the ball and controlling the clock to give the shitty defense a break. Breece should’ve led the league in carries.
We were already cooked by midseason though. QB got worse here than last year, and besides it's not just the QB, the defense forgot how to play too. Seems to be a pattern with this coach. Besides, did you see Kraft do this exact same thing in NE - and they are in the SB the same year! Not saying we will be in the SB, but we need to try to do better, there is a precedent there and not just NE, many other teams who fired inept HC after 1 year and did better because of it. As far as Rooney rule, we will be fine there. It's not against the rules to call a candidate to gauge his interest. The same exact thing was done just a couple of weeks ago to John Harbaugh, when more teams reached out to him than there were openings. Once you know he is interested (and there would be no other HC options at that point), you could fire Glenn and interview a few folks. And if they are good, you could consider them too. Speaking of Kraft, he did this in 1 day with two candidates. I think the Jets would be just fine too.
It's not a coincidence Kraft is back in the SB. When Belichick missed play-offs twice, he told him to fuck off. Yes, he won 6 SBs, a legend, etc, but that was before. Now he lost, and Kraft wanted to find to someone who can win. Not yesterday, but tomorrow. Mayo failed too, he quickly turned to someone else. That's why they are back quickly. Kraft does not wait when it becomes obvious even to a fool that the guy is bad. When it is clear probability of future success is low, he moves on, even from someone who won 6 SBs and just made play-offs 2 years ago. Plus intentionally tanked to get a QB. You move on and move on again when you feel probability is low for the next guy, Until you hit. Not sit on your ass because 1 year is too short to know for sure. There is plenty of evidence probability is low for Glenn. Does not take a genius to hire someone else to improve your odds. But it does take a fool that Woody is to keep these shit odds for one more year.
dude get krafts nutz outta your mouth. Saw him at the game Sunday he’s like drooling all over himself, he’s not some mastermind
That's one disturbing visual. lol. Just shows you don't need to be a genius like I said. Just not a complete fool like Woody. Speaking of fools, looks like Glenn is getting closer to adding Reich: https://x.com/Connor_J_Hughes/status/2015947043412320755 "Things are progressing between the #Jets & Frank Reich, per sources. We’ll see if New York can get it done. They’re trying"
There are certainly people who think he is a bad coach, and deservedly so. Do I think people on this Jets board saw something tons of others didn't? Not really. His numbers as a D coordinator are there for everyone, and his last game as a DC he gave up like 55 points. But some of the vitriol towards the guy is probably the most unhinged I've seen for a single coach/player on his board easily. It's borderline weird. No, it doesn't make sense to want a guy to get fired 6 weeks into his HC job whether you liked him or not.. that's just not how it works. It also doesn't work to think we'd be considered by any good coach if we fire Glenn with the qb, talent, and sell off midway through the year. "1 of 32" isn't working very well for the Browns right now, a better situation than the Jets without firing our staff for a 2nd consecutive year. Blaming Glenn for Fields is also useless. I understood the signing at the time, and it was a bust. We busted so bad we got the #2 pick. Queue the complaints about not getting the 1 pick, and also complaining we got rid of Rodgers by the same crew. Again, the amount of people who became immediately vested in his failure is just weird.
You've latched into that group so my bad. But in the same vein, not wanting him to get fired because of the belief it will just get worse is not an endorsement. If he does have success next year, I can assume you will be writing just as much about how you were incorrect? You seem to constantly write about a lack of recognition (being right Glenn failed) about something that's not finished yet.
I really hope so, Jack. I want for Glenn to succeed and for me to be wrong on this. I am a big fan of this team and want to make play-offs, I want to see this again, and it's been difficult 15 years. For me it's not even winning season, it's making play-offs that I miss the most. I was not happy with 2015 season when lost to the Bills. I want to see the play-offs again. The vitriol you see about Glenn is not because people want to be right, it's because our season was effectively over in Sept (Sept for fuck's sake, no one recovered from 0-4 this century, the season was 3 weeks and a day in, and we were basically out of contention) and then went to historic downhill from there. Is that really hard to understand why people are so upset we kept the guy who did this? I want better, that's all there is to it. And I see people who fire coaches who do this bad and move on quickly having much higher success probability than us, who tend to keep them too long.
I didn’t say we should wait. I simply responded to your post the Texans did it in two consecutive years with the support of better ownership.
Holy hell lol, bet we lose JL because Glenn wants to call the plays https://x.com/i/status/2015985251982422388 "Coordinating candidates who spoke with the #Jets recently, per sources, came away from those conversations believing Aaron Glenn wanted to call the plays on defense." There is a growing belief among league circles that Chris Harris (DC) and Glenn (calling the plays) is a direction the Jets are warming up to.
I think to get Jimbo, Glenn would let him calls the plays. This may be true for Wink also. Kind of like what he is expected to do with Reich. Though who knows. But do you recall someone on this board actually suggesting that Glenn starts calling plays if he cannot get a really good candidate like Jim? lol There was a lot of pushback on this idea, and yet here we are.
You got that right. I did the #'s in another thread and he was over 100 carries below Bijon and not that much difference between McCaffrey. Yet both those RB's have some semblance of a WR corps for distribution. Hall could claim 1a when Wilson was healthy but the moment Wilson went down the ENTIRE offense should have gone through Hall. Hell, what he SHOULD have done was break the single season carries record. If a gaggle of "arm chair QB's" can figure this out what the fuck is Glenn's excuse?
No that wasn’t my point…I agree that would have been a very possible outcome, and all said and done, yeah this is a better outcome for draft position. My point was that I am not buying the excuse defending Glenn that “no one could win with this QB and/or this roster” That’s a bullshit excuse in defending Glenn when it was his decision on the QB That’s all
Mastermind or not, he cared enough for the team and the fanbase to eat millions of dollars to right a mistake and change course immediately, and it paid dividends as we can see. Woody made a terrible mistake hiring Tannenbaum and the 33rd team, made an even worse mistake by hiring their recommended guy who flew right in the face of all logic. He’s terrible at game management, terrible at X’s and O’s, has fielded average to terrible defenses most of his career as a DC, and is a defensive minded coach when we desperately need an offensive leader to help identify and develop a QB. Instead we have some asshole breakdancing on the sidelines with 2 minutes left in the game (that we eventually lost). What fucking good quality does this coach possess? Not one. I’d fucking kill to have Woody elevate his intelligence to match a drooling Robert Kraft.
I meant in the sense that he generally waits a year too long to fire guys, which is hard to argue at this point. Saleh is the glaring recent example but people forget that Bowles put together consecutive 5-11, 5-11, and 4-12 seasons before Woody finally gave him the boot.
