Look at the amount and quality of the job openings. Who is choosing the Jets over anyone not named the Browns or Raiders?
The reality is, he should have been fired. With each passing day it is becoming more obvious, and Glenn may even understand that as well, but he cannot fire himself since he will lose too much money. So he is effectively doing what the new coach would do had Woody replaced Glenn. Which is hiring brand new staff all over, while keeping a few guys who did a decent job. This is what I would expect Kubiak or McCarthy or anyone else to do: keep a few guys and fire most. Glenn is basically admitting his failures pretty much everywhere and is starting over as if he is the new coach who just got here. That is a right thing to do. It is much harder for Glenn than for a new coach, since he is a lame duck now with likely only a year left and every candidate knows it. It's just that it should be someone else who should be coming in and doing this, but frankly speaking this approach to fire pretty much everyone is a correct one.
It would be a really really bad thing to have a job opening the same year as the Giants, Ravens, Steelers and Bills. In 2027 you have to assume there’s going to be far less top level jobs available. I’d much rather be in the hypothetical 2027 pool than this one.
We're probably a less desirable destination than either of those two. At least those two franchises, in theory anyway, will provide less of a hot seat right off the bat than signing up to coach for the Jets, where the seat will be hot immediately.
I don’t think Woody is smart enough to have that sort of foresight but I do think it worked out for us that we didn’t fire Glenn this year. We should be the prime landing spot next year since all the bottom feeder franchises made their move this year (Cardinals, Titans, Raiders, Browns) and all the ones you mentioned made the moves this year. It’s hard to imagine there being as much competition next year for the better candidates.
Not a moment too soon. Agree. He is admitting what he doesn’t know and did wrong. In this case, selecting the wrong personnel. Be it Wilkes or the QB coach, those where blatant errors that should have cost him his job. Hope the next bunch gets this train back on track. I know this might sound silly, but the most critical selection IMO, may be even more so than the DC should be a QB guru that knows how to develop young talent.
He was much derided when he joined us but I really liked him as a QB and then he did his best to help Sam, he always looked like he had it upstairs to be a coach of somekind.
Agreed. He did a pretty decent job for us in 2017, all things considered, and seems like the kind of guy you would want around in your franchise. I'd love to have him as the OC, but I'd rather they not hire him for that and instead bring him in for an interview for the HC job next January.
The Dallas cowboys just hired Mike McCarthy experienced coach who won a SB! Woody wasted that opportunity a few years ago. Couldn’t wail to stick us with Gase Salah and now Glenn
you almost made me say what!!! They hired a guy they fired not long ago. I think you meant to put Pittsburgh Steelers
I think that’s the bruised and battered Jets fan in you speaking. They’re a mess they just happen to have the first pick.
They are a mess, but there's at least two things going for them that the Jets don't have. The first is they're getting Mendoza with the #1 pick. And, second, any assistant that might have a choice between the Raiders and the Jets can, at least in theory, think that they'll have a better sense of job security coming in with a new HC rather than joining up with a coach that may not be the coach at the end of next season if they get off to another slow start. Both situations are bad, but for this particular offseason, I think ours is worse. Fast forward to next January when we're presumably looking for the next HC, the Jets are a much more attractive job with multiple first round picks and, most likely, a very high pick with which to take a QB.
Which means they will have a QB, some weapons with Bowers and Jeanty as well. Much better place for a new HC.
This is such a cluster fuck Anybody could see that having a coach who’s had an historically bad year, setting multiple records of futility (turnovers, picks, etc.) and having pretty much every single player regress, a coach that is in the same conversation as Gase and Kotite…anyone could see it’s a disaster. It’s not a shock at all to hear all this smoke (and where there’s smoke there’s fire) that several (many?) quality coaches are avoiding this mess. It’s an obvious observation. The only hope really is to get a more inexperienced or less qualified asst coach and hope that somehow he really turns into a good coach…kind of like finding that diamond in the rough…which has happened to us almost never, but really that is the only hope. How Woody can’t see that this is just already throwing away next year after this year’s disaster is just mindboggling. How can anyone be SO stupid? I try to just let it go because there’s nothing I can do, but as I get older I just hate going into season after season with no hope. Even having the #2 pick, and another mid round pick to boot…usually going into a year with two first round picks followed by a year with 3 first round picks, you’d be ecstatic…you’d be saying “ok…now we’re FINALLY on our way!…We’re going to be good!” But nope. I feel NONE of that…I KNOW we’re going to suck next year…no QB and no forseeable path to getting one this year…an HC who is in the same category as Kotite and Gase, two of the worst NFL HCs ever, and an owner who has no clue what to do. There is no hope here… For all the Lord of the Rings fans…its like when Eomer says…Do not trust to hope…it has forsaken these lands That’s how I feel And to see the Giants go out and get Harbaugh to coach up Dart and expect them to become respectable….man … Just saw the Steelers are hiring McCarthy…one of my favorite candidates … there is no hope. AG can’t do it…he’s a dead man walking…the best scenario I can see to be honest is to suck SO bad next year that AG gets fired mid-season, we clean house and use those 3 first rounders to lure a much better HC candidate here…of course it wouldn’t be as good as the scenario now with 5 first rounders in the next two years…but honestly, that’s the best outcome I can think of. The actual chance of AG turning it around and becoming a good HC and starting to get us on the right path is like a ZERO probability to me right now…I don’t think that is ever going to happen here.
Love the LOR reference and this is exactly how I feel. If you went back and read my posts the last 15 years (I don't recommend it lol) I have always been one of the most optimistic Jets fans on here. I got so excited this time of year with half the assets we have going into this year and was excited. I always had hope, that feeling is gone, snatched away by Glenn and Woody. To see what this organization has become is truly despicable, they have sucked the happiness and optimism right out of me.
It is hard to see who would walk to walk into this operation that is a quality candidate - you much pretty know off the bat: - next year the Jets are unlikely to win more than 3-5 games - you don't have a QB and winning without a top tier QB is very hard and you need everything else to be excellent (and it isn't) so you are more than likely going to struggle massively next year which isn't going to reflect well on you - the guy that is bringing you in is likely to be getting fired within the next 12 months and whomever comes in after him is likely to want to clear house and bring their own people in so you have no real job security (unless you can demand a multi-year deal so you at least have compensation coming your way) - while the Jets do have several draft picks it is very rare that a rookie makes a massive impact right from the start so the chances of anyone the Jets take being a real difference maker next year seems unlikely so how are they going to have some huge turnaround it is hard not to think that the only people that will be interested will be those with few other options or that are looking to get their break into the NFL
