I’m in this page. If you take Reese you are gambling on pure athleticism. I guarantee he will blow the combine away. You can just see that natural athlete on the field. I just don’t feel he’s a DE. He’s a great player but at DE he just doesn’t got the girth to play that position. For me he’s Shaq Thompson 2.0 and very good Will LB in a 4-3 D or a 3-4 OLB where I feel he could be an all pro player. A team that runs a 3-4 will absolutely love this kid because he can cover TE, tackle on the edge and rush the passer from the outside with his speed. Rex would have loved this kid
Bain accepted invite to Senior Bowl. No reason for him to go but he wants to show it and that is another reason Jets need to consider him.
THAT is what I'm talking about!!! I've stated before, if I'm any FO I'm in full attendance to all these games. Sr. Bowl, North vs. South... There are a few. THESE are your "players." Makes me like Bain even more...
Bain dominated at the highest level for multiple years. Short arms. Who cares. He looks like Elvis Summerville out there. Guy loves. Football too. It’s an easy choice for me. Will help our run game too
I would not draft a safety at 2, but I think we have to add David Bailey to the list. 14.5 sacks in 380 pass rush snaps is pretty awesome. Lead FBS in sacks. I watched his last game was against Oregon, and I was blown away by his performance, even though I wasn't even watching him, focusing on Dante at the time. But I ended up seeing him in Dante's face all night. For comparison Bain had 9.5 sacks on 557 pass rush snaps. Basically Bain played almost 50% more snaps but Baily is the one who had 50% more sacks. It's not just sacks, but pressure rate is all higher for Bailey, more QB hits, 3 forced fumbles vs 1, 4 more TFLs, etc... Run defense is where Bain has an edge. But Bailey was much improved in run defense this year according to PFF, which gave him very good 81.5 grade. Bain has 86.2 grade. At least according to PFF, the difference is not that massive. The good news is that both of them will be at sr Bowl. If they participate in all activities against same players, we will know a lot more, plus we will have the measurements, which I do feel could make a difference, since they are pretty close as far prospects. Reese kind of has this freakish athleticism where he COULD be as good a run defender as Bain because of his amazing strength, and he COULD be as good or better a pass rusher as Bailey because of freakish athleticism. But the problem is he is a projection. Not an unrealistic one, but projection nevertheless. He is younger too. And @Rockinz , @Jonathan_Vilma and others mentioned that it may not be that easy to convert to full time edge. Many analysis feel that he will, but again we are talking about a projection. Do we want to take a chance at 2 to get a Parsons, who is not a Parsons yet and we have to project that he will develop into one? Tough to say right now, but I am really looking forward to sr Bowl to get some more data on two of the guys. Maybe we can get some of the answers there.
Arm length does matter against uber athletic OL men, and elusive QBs. It's not everything of course and Bain is a really good player no matter where he is drafted, but yeah an inch of arm length could be a difference between a strip sack and a TD conceded. Granted, I don't think it is end all be all, but if two guys are close, physical measurements can pull one guy a little ahead, because it does matter to SOME extend. Mooge agrees as well. https://jetsxfactor.com/2025/02/05/ny-jets-mock-draft-darren-mougey-philosophy/ "“One of the more important parts of the evaluation process is each player’s measurables. Being height, weight, speed, hand, arm, length, all those things. Each position has a threshold. Kind of a cutoff line. If his speed is below this, he’s probably not going to make it, or we’ll definitely have to downgrade him. Or if his size or length is below this, we’re going to have downgrade him." “With that being said, you don’t want to weight it too much. Some of these kids have three years, good body of work on film, and they’re good football players. How much do we want to ding them because they’re a tenth of a second slower than another guy? And that may be subjective, but it’s always going to take a role and play a part in it, and have its weight. How much weight that is, I think it depends by player/position.” So, it does have SOME weight. Meaning especially if it is close, measurements could make a difference.
I watched the same game and was also keying on Moore and to a lesser extent TT's LB Rodriguez. But yeah, Bailey was ALL over the place. He definitely elevated his status that game! I love Bain but I don't think he is gonna be a guy that gets 12-15 sacks/year if that's what we're expecting. More of a "disruptor" like Quinnen was. Lots of TFL's and QB pressures, etc.
The crazy thing is that Bailey was 2nd in the FBS in TFL with 19.5. Bain had 14.5 though playing a lot more snaps. Plus 1st in sacks. Objectively speaking he was the best pass rusher in FBS last year as far as production. He is 1 year older than Bain, 22 turning 23 end of August, while Bain is turning 22 early Sept. Someone mentioned they didn't play Bailey on early downs at some point, that he is not a 3 down player. But i am not sure if they were talking about Stanford or TT and if this season in TT was it early int he season when they were still working him in or throughout. He was selected as unanimous all American DE. To me it's a 3 horse race at the 2: Bain, Reese, Bailey. I am currently leaning Bain/Bailey over Reese since there is a a bit more projection there, though his potential is higher, but it is still early. Sr Bowl next week where Bain/Bailey both participate should be interesting.
You all know my dislike for the college game these days but, having said that, I never miss the “all star” games. As stated above, those are where I go to find who I feel are “draftable” players.
A big factor to consider as well, which you mentioned is “develop”. I’m not convinced or confident AG can develop a DB never mind an edge rusher
I'm sold. I would be good with any of these 3 guys at 2. Only other move that would make sense to me is a trade down.
Is Bailey now close to what Reese may become IF he gains weight, able to move to Edge full time AND develops well in the next 1 or 2 years? It appears Bailey is about as freakishly athletic, but an inch shorter. 405 bench, 550 squat, clocked at 22.16 mph: https://x.com/NYJetsTFMedia/status/2012547644103483429 If so, might as well just draft an older, but more developed version of Reese in Bailey. How was his run defense last year? According to PFF he drastically improved and is actually good there as well now, only somewhat below Bain, who is great. Bailey is also listed at 250 now, looks like he gained 12 lbs from previous year (or listed generously), which could have made a difference.
So if we draft Reese or Bailey, where does McDonald go? I just think a true SSDE liek Bain is a 3 down player. Can't pass him up. JJ is undersized for SSDE and WMCD is undersized for a WSDE.
I haven’t watched much of Bailey just his highlights. Now that you brought him to my attention I’ll take a bit of a deeper dive. I just feel Bain is the guy.
That would be great. I do see that while he played the most snaps out of Edge guys in TT and early downs snaps too, he wasn't there for nearly every snap like Bain was. Could just be that they had more rotational guys. But the biggest concern is whether he is good in rushing defense. If he could be every down guy in the NFL.
