Our history of picking number two hasn't been very stellar. In fact, they are all huge busts, not even a decent NFL player in the bunch. But, we have to be due right? RIGHT?!!!??
Look, we know the outcome already. If the Jets draft Moore, he will be a bust. If he goes to a different team he will probably play well. Or he will become good once he leaves the Jets.
Half? I'd think the Jets have drafted an average of about six players a year for the last couple of decades. But there's absolutely no way they've hit on half of them. Do you really think they'll do that much better on six first rounders?
And then trade back for even more picks? Don't you think that sooner or later they should put some of those picks to use? Like following a 3 - 14 season? The NFL is built on the premise of winning football games, not seeing how many picks you can amass.
I went back 30 years and looked at all the QBs drafted #1 overall and there were 21 of them (which goes to show what a premium is put on the position (also - trust the Jets to get the #1 pick in a year where there were no QBs taken in the first two rounds!)) - by my rough and ready reckoning I would say that there are 6 or 7 that you would class as being really good and another 6 or 7 that you would be happy enough with and then 6 or 7 that you would say didn't pan out - still that is about a 55-66% success rate. I then looked at years where QBs went 1 and then another one in the top 5 (i.e. there were two very QB needy teams) and this happened 11 times over the same period and again by my rough reckoning I would say that until very recently the only time you would have been happy picking second (with the benefit of hindsight) was 1999 and Donovan Mcnabb (and then both the last two years with Stroud and Daniels) - so yeah it looks like going second isn't a great strategy (I know lots of good QBs end up going later but that is in part because they are typically going to better run teams).
The more I've watched and read up on Moore, the more I realize the Jets need to avoid him at all costs. This has Zach written all over him. He's not only raw but he forces throws into tight windows, has a lightweight build, delayed decision-making, and there's even been questions about his accuracy and wilting under pressure. Not to mention he has a limited amount of snaps and games under his belt compared to the normally high rated QB prospects. This guy screams project. I don't give a shit what anyone says and all this overly starved QB talk and the false premise that you just take a QB high every year until you get it right. Fuck NO you don't do that. It's why the Jets are where they are today. You don't waste a highly valuable pick like #2 that could be a game changer for the next decade on a project QB. That's irresponsible. We HAVE to get a proven commodity at that pick. Otherwise, you're just throwing shit at the window and hoping it sticks. Gotta go Bain or another impact stud at 2. Hell NO to Moore.
Yeah, I was thinking about this recently. The second QB taken in a 2 QB draft at the top like this one just has bust written all over it. Very worried that they just give in to all the clueless fan pressure, media, talking heads; rather than actually having a plan in place to avoid this desperation scenario.
