Yup, and the coaching and accountability which means that all the eight players who need to do the right thing for a play to succeed, do the right things. No lazy routes, short-arm catches, blown blocks, etc. etc. etc.
This, and it goes even deeper. Bellicheck spent tons of time with the offense, helping them understand the mind of a DC and the defensive players. He wanted receivers who can understand what he taught in finding the soft spots and creating mismatches. Bellicheck had a player evaluation card of everyone on the team, and each one had the note to not ask a player to do what he is incapable of doing. He tailored the offense and defense to play to the strength of the individuals. He was never locked into any particular formation or theory.
This is a HUGE part of it. You can call it “maximizing talent” or “putting the right butts in the right seats” or whatever other term, but it is one of the most important parts of coaching, and also of being a competent owner. Woody has ZERO sense of this, and it’s why we keep hiring bad GMs and bad HCs…he has no clue on people. Coaching is the same. Can’t remember who said it, but they were talking about Vince Lombardi, and the quote was something like this (and I am paraphrasing)…”he can beat you with his guys, and then you can turnaround and switch teams, and he can beat you with your guys”…something to that effect… I think great coaches know how to maximize talent. Glenn took our guys and made them worse. He led Fields to his worse ever season (and that’s saying something…). He has to go
Every single player except Breece Hall and Austin McNamara had their worst season as a professional under Glenn.
Spot on. I don't understand how people blame this on the roster. Bob won 7 games with similar roster and Zach/Boyle/Streveler/etc at QB, before going 2-3 and getting fired a year after. And Bob is not a good HC, just not as bad as Glenn. Jags have pretty similar roster too compared to last year when they picked higher than us, but winning a lot more. Chicago, NE. But Bob had guys becoming all Pros, team MVPs, who are now virtually unplayable. Let's stop with the excuses. Glenn is a proven good DB coach, bottom 3d DC, and historically bad HC. Enough is enough. We deserve more than another season of this bullshit. Let's at least attempt to find someone better. We need to keep trying until we hit. But Glenn needs to be done here.
Fields was a no-hoper and it was a terrible decision from the start. Mike Tomlin isn't the coach to be giving up on decent QBs, that should have been a sign. You can't teach accuracy and decision making at this level, and teams keep making the mistake that they can take athletes and teach them the decision making needed to play QB. Agree with the rest of your points, however.
The point is though as bad as Fields was, Glenn made him A LOT WORSE. He legitimately regressed to be on the level of undrafted rookie, worse than his own rookie year. As bad as he was, he started 6 games last year for Arthur Smith, and the offense got 22 ppg, only 1 point less than what Rodgers is getting them now. Plus better winning percentage than what they have now. So sure, yes, you can say he was not a good signing and you were proven correct, but he still regressed, and not by a little bit, but substantially. There is just no excuse for this coach to still be here a week from today.
Such a ridiculous statement, but I bet it's expected that I provide all the research to prove it is such not the other way around.
@JackBower He made it worse. Certainly not a stretch at this point to conclude he might make a rookie QB worse too.
Please explain: What did Glenn do specifically to make him worse? What stats prove your point hes regressed to worse than his rookie year? None of us watched all the games so stats need to be relied on here. You used PPG and win percentage as a reference, 1 ppg better than Rodgers. Since it's only the HC that effects the QB, and Tomlin is still the HC there, I assume the QB has been less effective. What is the point you are trying to make here? If you point to the OC hired, please provide names of the OCs that Glenn passed on that would be better. You also need to prove they wanted to join his staff. I'm trying to understand honestly.
The special teams is amazing. Funny how that's the bottom third of our roster that is completely bereft of talent according to some, wonder why they are so good since they are the dregs of a hopeless roster. That is coaching, thats what good coaching can do to a unit. The only thing Glenn got right was listening to Westhoff when he recommended Banjo.
How does having a good special teams correlate to the effectiveness of those same players on other units? If you are going to call out the coordinator on D/O please provide the names of the people you wanted, why, and either their connection to Glenn or why they would have joined the jets.
