While I understand that free agency and the draft don't have a lot to offer in the running back department, I don't get the fascination with Michael Turner. Aside from Jordan's better college career and receiving game (just look at Turner's career receiving stats, 7 catches in three years, you have to be fricken kidding me), they are very similar in their roles as backup RBs. Turner may have gaudy stats in yards per rush but there is a reason he didn't get more carries (and I am not talking about LaDanian Tomlinson). If Turner was good for even five yards a carry consistantly, Marty Schottenheimer would run him every down. The fact is, he comes in fresh behind a strong OL, against tired defenses that have spent the week preparing for LT and devloping a scheme against a different style of RB. Once Turner gets a starting job somewhere, his aerage rushing stats will diminish signifiantly. Also, unless he can get separation in space and learn to become a receiving threat he will see eight or nine men in the box on every down. Why is this guy worth a first or even a second rounder? I just don't see it. Give me some free agent (Rhodes) and a mid round pick (Gary Baxter) over Turner any day of the week. You cant evaluate Turner using stats he has run behind LT the entire time. To evaluate Turner you would have had to seen him play.
Running backs do not last long in the NFL. Jordan would be much cheaper though, and a worthy back to add to our tandum.
I had the same thoughts about him coming in behind a great OL, but in another thread (yes, there is another thread on Michael Turner believe it or not) someone posted a video link and I was impressed. Yes, his OL was opening huge holes, but he also showed desire and toughness. He punished SOMEONE at the end of EVERY run. I don't think anyone expects him to hit 5 ypc, but his desire can't be questioned. Can he hold up over 16 games? Who knows, but he's shown more than any RB in the draft, that's for sure.
Not happening. Way too bitchy and low character for the Mangini regime. I think with guys like Michael Bush or Tony Hunt being similar running backs that are younger and cheaper, a 1st or 2nd rounder is a little much for an unproven guy like Michael Turner. NFLdraftcountdown has both of these guys available at 57, so why trade that pick for him when we can get a similar player and keep the money for guys like Samuel and Steinbach?
While I in no way support getting Turner - I think it is unfair to cite Turner's lack of receptions. The situation he plays in(garbage time) is not conducive to alot of passing plays. He's sent in there to run out the clock in blowouts. Again - I repeat - I think it would bea horrible horrible move to give up a draft pick(let alone a 2nd!) for a guy like Turner.
And you say this why?... His first season in OAK with Kerry Collins at QB and a crappy line he rushed for over 1,000 and had like 70 catches. Last season, he was hurt. I don't think one injury = can't carry the load for the team.
While your words may be on the mark, I think we all heard the same song and dance about Jordan when he was backing up Curtis Martin. As a backup Jordan looked like n all pro. As a starter he is just another guy.
Jordan played in garbage time as well but he was a proven receiving threat. Otherwise, please tell me how Turner now is any different than what most of us thought we had in Jordan while he was with the Jets.
yeah he also only averaged about 3.8 yrds a carry. Plus he'll be 29 by the time the year starts--4 yrs older than the Burner.

I wouldn't take Lamont back if he played for free if I had the oppurtunity to get Turner. He can break tackles, move the pile and hit the corner for the big one. The jets have not had a tailback like that in the last 20+ years I have been watching the team. Turner reminds me of R Williams without the social disorder. Secondary's will be afraid to hit him and will have to wrap him up, and he's not afraid to hit them.
The league in general has gone away from one back teams. I think Jordan can fit the billet for short yardage or bruising back. He has break away speed and can be tough to tackle if he finds open field. I think he has a lot to offer to our team.
I've seen a few people make comments like this about Jordan. I don't recall anything like this. Can you refresh my memory?
Wow! That was a great video. I was very impressed by the star of the video. I would be very happy if the Jets did sign Kris Dielman. I mean OMFG, Vinny Testaverde could run for 200 yards per game through holes like the ones the OL made in that video.
