Umm…. 3 for $69M. You gave 3 for $51M $18M shouldn’t have prevented you from signing him. It has to be that he just wanted any easy route to winning, yes? I’ve been waiting for the picture of what Stearns was doing to come into focus but so far I don’t like what he’s doing and I have no confidence in him! Not see the vision. Breaking: Edwin Díaz and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a deal, a source tells @jorgecastillo. The contract is for three years and $69 million, sources tell @JeffPassan. The back-to-back champs are adding one of the best closers in baseball. @AnthonyDiComo I'm told the Mets offered Edwin Díaz three years and $66 million (with slight deferrals) and indicated they had some room to improve that figure. Díaz chose the Dodgers' offer of three years and $69 million instead. It his understanding that Diaz didn’t go back to the Mets to see if they’d match. So you gotta believe he wanted out, and a chance to win a championship.
Well, if Diaz didn't even try to get the Mets to match or beat the deal, then you can't really blame Stearns (I guess everyone wants to just throw their glove out there and win a championship). Still, this has been a terrible offseason so far - the team is clearly worse than they were last year, and Alonso seems halfway out the door.
I don’t really blame the Mets for letting Diaz walk. He’s good every other year and relievers in general are so inconsistent. Only two guys have led the NL in saves multiple times in the last ten years and both guys did it with two different teams. Clase in the AL and Kimbrel skew the numbers a bit because they both led 3 and 4 straight years but the days of Mariano, Gagne, etc. are done for now.
What a completely disastrous offseason. Where the hell is Cohen in all of this? They took all of the good will from 2024, lost half of it with the shitty 2025 season, and are now flushing the rest of it right down the toilet. I hope Stevie enjoyed the great attendance numbers in 2025, because he is sure as hell not going to see them in 2026! Edit: And unless they get to the World Series in 2026, IMO it's not going to matter who they bring in to replace these guys. These were probably the three most popular guys on the team, and they traded one, and showed little urgency in keeping the other two. The fans are going to be PISSED. You also really have to wonder what is going on in the clubhouse, when Nimmo willingly waives his no-trade clause, Diaz doesn't give the Mets a chance to match the Dodgers' offer, and Alonso doesn't even give them a courtesy meetup at the winter meetings.
Breaking: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell @JeffPassan. Get breaking news alerts from Jeff Passan through the ESPN App
I don’t think it’s that complicated with Alonso. He’s probably the Mets best hitter of all time and they gave him a bullshit one year deal last year. Why would he want to go back there after being disrespected? I also heard a bunch of chatter about Nimmo not being able to play the outfield longer term for the duration of his contract on WFAN. You guys watch every day, I’m not sure if he is or isn’t a good fielder. But Soto is a mess in the outfield so if Nimmo is only so-so, the outfield defense is trash as a whole.
My issue with the Nimmo trade wasn't making it, it's the implications of the fact that he was quite willing to turn his back on the only team he's ever known, especially given that Alonso is now doing the same thing. Notice, by the way, that I didn't say anything about supposed loyalty to the fans. That doesn't exist now, if it ever did, and there's nothing wrong with that. My concern is that Cohen is trying to make Flushing a destination for players, and instead players who have had success here seem to be more than happy to leave. That, to me, is a very bad sign. It certainly doesn't say anything good about either Stearns or Mendoza.
I actually don’t get emotionally attached to players to be honest, but this isn’t a strong free agency class. Who exactly are they signing that’s supposed to offset the losses they’re taking? The roster looks like it’s headed for real trouble. I’m not seeing the game plan here.
Maybe the way the Mets dropped their pants and bent over for Soto didn’t sit all that well with the rest of the team? Just wild speculation, I don’t really follow them except when my nephew starts to talk shit about the Yankees
Also the optics around the Mets right now doesn’t help. If the money is comparable, why would a free agent choose to come here over anywhere else? I mean seems like this organization has a negative aura around it right now.
Season over in December. This may be a new record. .... Yes I'll wait and see what happens, but like many others, I do not see the plan here. Getting rid of your your home grown talent and letting your best players walk... Hopefully Cohen has something up his sleeve because I'm disgusted right now. Are they really this confident in their farm? Without Pete Alonso last year, this team wins maybe 50 games even less if you subtract Diaz. They better have something brewing.
Apparently they never even made Alonso an offer. After what happened last offseason (which I fully understood, by the way), the complete disinterest this year could only lead to this outcome, so it's obvious that Stearns actively wanted nothing to do with him. You have to give Stearns credit for chutzpah, if nothing else - if the Mets don't have an excellent year, both regular season and postseason, not only will he lose his job, I don't see him getting another GM job. Pretty bold move to put your entire career on the line when you're only 40 years old.
and it looks like the Mets are ready to sign another ex-Yankee reliever. Luke Weaver-2 yrs for 22mil.
