Fuck to the hell NO!!! No meaning he should NOT be here…I wouldn’t have an issue firing him now! Why is this even a question?
They should go hire Al Harris from the Bears and formerly the Cowboys. Every where he goes the defensive backs pick a bunch of balls off. He should’ve gotten the coordinator job in Dallas after overseeing the Cowboys being top 10 in INT’s as the defensive backs coach in every season from 2020-2024 except 2020 and 2023. They led the league in 2021, 7th in 2022, 9th in 2023. Daron Bland broke the pick 6 record in 2023 with 9 total INTs (5 TDs) and Diggs had 11 in 2021. Now he’s in Chicago as the defensive backs and defensive pass game coordinator and they lead the league in INT’s there. Former Jets great Jim Leonhard would be a good choice too. He is with the Broncos now and has been a defensive coordinator before at Wisconsin. A lot of folks at Wisconsin wanted him to take over the head coaching job before they hired Luke Fickell.
Harris from the Bears is a good call. You know who I also like, if you can shake him free, is Matt Burke in Houston. He's taken over playcalling this year and the defense got better. He's got a good feel and he coaches VISCIOUS defenses! If any of you caught that Sunday night game, the other night, the Texans had a NY Jets SEAON'S worth of wicked tackles in ONE game! Our defense is S-O-F-T and they need beaten into shape. They can throw an Asst. Head Coach at Burke as an enticer. Or is that already taken. I can't remember... Just pondering...
I’m not defending Wilks but I also think he catches a shit ton of heat here for things out of his control. What exactly were the coaching or scheme deficiencies on Sunday as an example? Our linebackers got thrown practically 5 yards out of the play in each direction on every run play. There were gaping seams all day. I’d prefer to move on and get a fresh new perspective that isn't tired like Wilks sort of is, but he’s probably a middle of the road coordinator. Not like the worst coach in history like is the perception here.
Not the worst coach maybe but there is a reason why he’s been fired so often and after short stints. I am not an NFL coach so I can’t pick apart schematic deficiencies, but just watch the games man. This defense is out of position, receivers are running free all over the place, we can’t fucking tackle worth shit (watching us hug the Miami running backs and carry them to the end zone was fucking painful), and they are not playing hard. Whatever the specific reason, this guy (and I also blame Glenn too here) is NOT elevating the players and maximizing their abilities. That is pretty plain to see. If we had someone like Parcells or Belichick, or shit, even fucking Saleh and Ulbricht, this defense would not be this bad. ONE fucking takeaway all year? That’s NFL record level ineptness. Not ONE single pick after 13 games?? Do you ever see our guys punch the ball out and have like 2 or 3 defenders at the ball ready to pick it up? No you don’t, because it’s never happened. I love the analysis as much as anyone, but I feel like watching this team play, whether it’s the piss poor QB play from Fields when he was in there, whether its the way too many drops by our receivers, or whether it’s the defense overall, you can see we suck and most phases of the game. This is not a well coached team, and it’s obvious to watch.
Eh he was with the Panthers a long time. He got let go when the Browns fired the head coach after the 2019 season. Same deal in Carolina. Rhule gets fired mid season and there was a lot rumblings that the players wanted Wilks to remain the head coach and they ultimately decided to hire Canales. The 49ers yeah for sure, but he got fired basically for the shitty SB performance. Not making excuses but that’s kind of the life of a middle of the road defensive coach. It’s not like he’s been working for stable organizations in the Panthers, Browns, Cardinals and Jets (outside 1 year with the 49ers).
I disagree on this. In years past we had significant breakdowns in the secondary. This year that doesn't seem to be the case as much. The players are just getting beat, a step behind. That's a talent issue and not a schematic one. also we had Ulbrich last year, an all pro corner and all pro DT, and the defense was still shit, so idk what that "it wouldnt be as bad with Ulbrich" is all about... i still voted for beer in the poll and I dont care if they get rid of Wilks or not
