I’ll preface this by saying I want nothing to do with Ty Simpson as the Jets QB. However, Georgie absolutely dominated that line from start to finish and his elite receivers dropped balls all over the place today. Ryan Williams dropped a touchdown and Germie Bernard (as good as he’s been) dropped one as well. He was under siege today and he’s allegedly been dealing with a bad back injury for a month now. I know all these kids try but Simpson looked like the only dude that showed up today. Again, he’s a career Aaron Murray backup in the NFL IMO but today’s shitty showing wasn’t on him.
He went 42 - 0 as a starter in high-school and 14 - 3 in college at two high profile schools, including a Heisman trophy to his resume. He's not a "winner?" What else you need as proof? A Super Bowl?! (Good luck getting one of those! Oh wait, we did with Bret Favre, Joe Flacco x2, Aaron Rodgers....) It's OK not to like him for other reasons, but coming into the League, bro was the definition of someone who won A LOT of games.
Mendoza locked himself in as first overall pick. Someone will trade up. Hopefully not us. Great night for the kid though.
Fair enough (though I could give two shits about his high school record) But it hasn’t translated to the NFL
Agreed I love players who come up big in big games when it matters, especially as opposed to players who come up small in big games (*cough*vernon gholston*cough*) That’s the first and (so far) only game of Mendoza’s that I’ve watched but he looked pretty damn good to me…came up huge with some deep throws on third and short situations too, which shows a lot of confidence in him and in his HC. I haven’t watched nearly enough to have any kind of informed opinion, so not saying I’d trade up for him, but if he were there when we are on the clock I’d probably say take him. Again, only watched this one game but dude came up huge in big moments against a legit Ohio State team. That’s impressive
Waiting for BrowningNagle and Jonathan Vilma to chime in about Mendoza but last night’s game didn’t change my opinion much. DO NOT trade up for him no matter what. P.S. I watched college football with extra care only this year. Not an expert here.
I was able to catch about 5 Indiana games this year and Mendoza has been this type of QB in all the games I have watched. Even when he makes a mistake he puts it away and goes back out there and keeps fighting and making big time throws over and over. To me a good QB has to be able to make plays and beat good defenses. Mendoza has been very consistent. I liken him to Kirk Cousins, I don’t think he’s going to be Pat Mahomes with Andy Reid but a second tier QB that will allow his team to consistently be in the running for the playoffs and get them through a tough schedule successfully throughout the year.
In the moment last night I was psyched about Mendoza, how could you not be. That was a thrilling 2nd half but honestly this morning I’m throwing some cold water on it. It’s the value of a strong defense, he was poor in the first half and was only able to have that clutch drive at the end because Indianas defense only gave up 10 points
This is where I’m at. He was obviously great in big moments last night but he’s still not a guy I’m giving up any future draft capital for. Someone absolutely will though.
We’ll see how he does in the playoffs but if I had to guess now he won’t fall to wherever we end up picking….ig the Saints Raiders and Browns all pick ahead of us he won’t make it past that if he somehow falls to us I would probably draft him…there’s something to be said for playing big in big moments… but yeah probably not a guy you’d give up the farm for
They also managed that game in a way to limit his involvement to an extent. Only 23 passing attempts. It goes both ways but neither team wanted to show a lot on tape since there’s a chance they play again when it matters a lot more. That game meant a lot more to Indiana than it did Ohio State. First conference championship game ever and first outright championship since the 40’s. Ohio State beat Michigan and now they want to win another ship. Big Ten Championships are consolation prizes.
