There is a lot of talk on this board about trading for Chargers backup RB M. Turner. While I wouldn't mind Turner on the team, I am not crazy about the idea of trading our 1st pick. And do not think that Turner will be more successful than Leon/Houston with our poorous run blocking. No holes, no yards. Turner <> Barry Sanders. I am a big fan of signing a vet guard or drafting the best guard (or best availabe in first day). I personally would like to see O or D-line addressed w/ #25. Anywho... Who do you think is our BEST RUN BLOCKING LINEMAN: or How would you RATE them in order? A) D'BRICK B) KENDALL C) MANGOLD D) MOORE E) CLEMENT Personally, i'm not impressed with any of them. Which is why I think we need to address this first before the RB pos. If I had to pick,I'd prolly go with Mangold (maybe Kendall), although, I don't think any of them did anything impressive. I would RATE it: C,B,E,A,D I would love to see us sign/draft a large man for the LG position to help D'Brick with his run blocking. And move Kendall to RG to help Clement (or other player). If Leon or Cedric have holes to run through, they will be fine (for next year).
We definately need work on both lines. And you are correct. Getting a RB and putting him behind the current line is just banging our heads against a wall. The first two things we need to focus on is an NT and then a RT and two guards. If we can just improve these spots it will go a long way for us next year.
I agree with you about not giving up a 1st for Turner, but I wouldn't take a guard at that point either. You can usually get those guys in later rounds...
I think it was Kevin "I Set The" Barlow. He always found the defender straight on, except he was usually carrying the ball...
I'm hoping to study the O-line in every single game we played this year but I've only watched about 2/3 of the games. In those 3 games I would rate them: Mangold-Doesn't really blow guys off the ball but is good at turning and sealing off his man from the running lane.Gets a good push on short yardage situations.Very good at run blocking on draw plays,he sells his block very well. Not too bad at getting past the linemen and taking out a linebacker. He's showed the speed and athleticism to get outside on end arounds/reverses and screens,I'd like to see him pull and be a lead blocker like Mawae use to be. Grade B+ Moore-A bit inconsistant, had a poor start and end to the year but was solid for a long spell in the middle of the season.Does a decent job of getting past the line and taking out a linebacker but he needs to work on finishing his blocks.Gets a good push on short yardage situations but doesn't dominate his man. He's very poor as pulling as a lead blocker. Grade C+ Kendall-Isn't big enough to push people about so he isn't much use in your standard blocking scheme. However we use him frequently to pull and act as a leadblocker, but he doesn't often successfully block him man when he is pulling. He did seem to play at a good standard to end the season though. Grade C+ Clement-Inconstancy is the game, one one play he could bull his man several yards down field but the next play he could be pushed back into the running lane.Really really bad in space. Grade C- D'Brick-Was probably the worst run blocker in the league in the first half of the season, did show some improvement though as the season went on.Simply doesn't have the strength to move people. Can sell the draw fairly well and I'd like to see him out in space to utilise his speed and athleticism. Grade D- Tight ends-I can't remember any brilliant runs that were down to the blocking of the tight ends but I think they did a solid job. They were asked to block defensive endsd too many times though. Grade B(graded for tight ends, they weren't better run blockers than Moore,Kendall and Clement but compared to other blocking tight ends)
If there was a very good OG prospect I wouldn't mind if they took him. But there are some very good RT prospects in this years draft. I can gaurantee most are going to be gone by the 3rd round. I would be very happy if the FO used one of their first 2 picks on a RT.
C, E, B, A, D. I put Mangold ahead of Clement, although I think statistically we had our highest YPC when we ran outside of Clement. Either way, it's pretty obvious that the one lineman who was truly garbage in run blocking was Moore. D'Brick started out decent in the run game, but played badly towards the end.
1)Clement 2)Mangold 3)Kendall 4)Moore 5)the blocking sled 6)the mrs fields hot chocolate and cookie guy 7)the guy who hands out promotional memorbilia before games 8)D'Brick
  Funny, but I think some here aren't giving Kendall enough credit. I thought he actually had a pretty good year, which surprised the crap out of me. Getting a bit long in the tooth but you can do a lot worse than him...
kendall cant get much credit because we never ran to the left side of the line. thats because the staff knows d'brick cant block but kendall will suffer in peoples opinion when you dont see too many people running in his gap. most of our yards were up the middle or off clement which is why clement and mangold got most credit from me. kendall is the best OL on our team though dont get me wrong. though his days are about numbered
That's why I'd love to get a roadgrader in the LG to help D'Brick. Kendall can compliment Clement. I'm not down on Clement like a lot on this board seem to be. I actually think the guy played well given he is a journey man. I still don't think anyone on the line gets a grade higher than a C+ for Run Blocking. This also contributes to my belief that whoever you put behind this line (Turner / Leon etc.) won't be spectacular because they will have d-lines immediately in there face.
About the Turner situation...I believe he will be just fine running behind our line because you have to remember that last year was the first year this line has been together. If you look at all the best lines in the league, they have all gelled together over time. If you look at arguably the best run offensive lineman in the league, Steve Hutchinson, he barely did anything for the Vikings line because they still had to gel. I guarantee you within the next 2-3 years people will start discussing the Jets line with the best lines in the league. Just let them gel and we will be fine. And to the question...I think Kendall has easily the best technique on the line. It's picture perfect however hes soo damn small. I still think hes the best right now on the line. I think he's tough, hardnosed, and will be a probowler, however still needs to improve his technique a little bit. Clement is not the future of the line. I think Moore had an underrated year as far as blocking is concerned. It was overshaddowed because everytime there was a flag on the oline it was because of Moore. Dbrick is long and lengthy and his technique is getting there. 30 pounds more and he'd be a stud. For him the footwork is there its just all about whether or not the coaching staff can get the pounds on him.
I have no idea what film you go back and watch if you think Clement was our best run blocker. He's at the bottom with D'Brick. The only difference is, Ferguson has time to improve, whereas Clement is going to be replaced.
