That is basic business when they are managing the roster and contracts and projecting needs and conceiving trades. If they aren't projecting half a decade ahead then they are not doing their jobs. The draft is part of that picture. You can't project that far without mocking ahead with needs. And in this case, with all of these high draft picks, you can't consider 2026 without also simultaneously considering 2027.
I understand what you are getting at. I was stuck on "specific players" as opposed to position/position grouping.
Most don’t believe Simpson, Sellers or Moore will come out this year because they have limited starting experience and/or inconsistent results.
If they pass on a QB then, I have to believe we're looking at Miami's Ruben Bain as a prime target in 26. Maybe a WR with the other first and who knows, maybe take a flyer on a QB with a Day 2 pick.
Bain is awesome and I’d be happy with that. I’ve been looking at Arvel Reese on Ohio State a lot more these past couple weeks. Check him out when you get a chance. There are enough good effective edge players or wide receivers that it’d be awesome to see them jump down to where the Raiders, Cardinals, etc. are in the 6-10 spot and still get a really good player while adding more picks.
A good EDGE would make us miss a guy like Sauce a lot less. We haven't had a decent pass rush since losing Bryce Huff and we haven't had a good pass rush since what feels like forever (John Abraham??).
Is that '27 class actually "better"? From what limited CFB I've watched this year not on that list.... Lagway and manning have been pretty disappointing, but I'll admit I havent seen much of the other guys...
JV. I much look forward to your inputs as we stay focused on the draft. Thanks for your contributions. Question since I’m completely unfamiliar with college talent. Is Reese more of a hybrid LB/DE as opposed to Bain? Also what are your thoughts on getting a DL. I have been reading quite a bit about DT Wood out of Clemson, while probably not a position people here would support but he could really be the answer as Q replacement.
I would take Bain anywhere outside of the top 2. If we're 3 and Mendoza/Simpson go 1/2 I'd take Bain over Moore and run. I think he's fantastic and as mentioned above he'd make two areas of the defense better. I really don't like the idea of pushing the QB decision of til 2027 though. You have no idea what's going to happen over the course of a college season. What looks great in 2026 might look like shit in 2027. Sellers and Arch with the belles of the ball, now neither of them could come out and neither would be top 10 picks let alone the top pick. The only thing we have going for us is 3 first rounders in 2027 and that could get us to where we need to be. But shit man, imagine having to pass on Jeremiah Smith because we needed to trade up to get the best QB in the draft?
A lot of people didn't think Allen, Mahomes, Jackson would be good QBs, so a lot of people are clueless on that front as well. But the more pertinent question is, would they have been good QBs if we had drafted them?
Bain's tape is pretty crazy. The kind of guy where you watch 5 mins of footage and you're immediately like "oh yeah this guy is going to be very good." Really smooth athlete and moves exceptionally well for someone his size. Bowers was like that too.
This is a situation created by having a new GM every 3 seasons. Their first order of business is to trade the guys from the previous regime. Although the reality is that the situation is created by a fucktard billionaire butt boy
This is one of my biggest issues with this team…we draft SO poorly, and then when we do actually hit on picks, we trade them away…you can also go back to Keyshawn drafted first overall and traded, we let Abraham and Revis walk out the door…it’s an endless cycle for us, which is why I like the return haul we got, but I am just so sick of letting good players go with the excuses we hear…we will NEVER get better when we keep letting good players out the door.
Reese is so hard to classify. I’m almost always out on any tweener these days since multiple positions = no position. But he’s such an exceptional combination of size, speed and instincts that he can make any type of play needed. He’s too small and probably a waste as a full time 4-3 defensive end. But he rushes the passer just like Micah Parsons does in the NFL. He overwhelms the linemen with speed (and can do it against guards or centers too). And then once they throw their hands, he’s somehow stronger than them at 6’3”, 245 pounds. He can play off the ball with enough range to cover and be in on almost every play. He fills gaps and meets running backs at the LOS from 6 yards back with a blocker running at him. You have to bounce around YouTube to really piece together what he does since it’s not really concentrated in one video. He’s #8.
Good point. If the Jets draft a QB, they'll need a coach dedicated to training him. Maybe they already have someone on the staff. I don't know.
