Don’t know his contract situation but I wouldn’t be opposed to waiting for 2027 draft for a QB and use him 2-3 years. What do you guys think?
I think he's a product of the Shanahan system and probably earned himself a nice payday next year. I dont think we can get him on a one year deal, and I don't know that I want him anyway.
Shanahan made Garropolo look great, dude looked like trash everywhere else, made Purdy look like a top 10 QB when no one could possibly believe he was capable of even being a starter at all, and now has Mac Jones played ng way above his ceiling. Unless Shanahan is coming here with Mac Jones to be our coach, hell no to Mac Jones as QB.
Posted in the other thread but I think Sam Howell is the guy that makes the most sense that will be available. He worked with our passing game coordinator at Washington. He only started one year but they replaced 2/3 of the receivers the next year and 3/5 of the offensive line. He battles back there. Plays a lot like Baker although he’s obviously much worse. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/year/2026/position/qb
Here's the real question... does the FO see a need to sign a third QB? Fields isn't going anywhere, we're presumably drafting a rookie. It's conceivable that they trot Fields out there again until he inevitably fails (for the fourth time) and then replace him in week 6.
I don’t think it’s likely they keep Fields unless he has a miraculous turnaround. They save 10m by cutting him.
He's got the physical ability of Chad Pennington at the end of his career, if he was also a gigantic cunt. No thanks
It’s not that cut and dry. If we release him after June 1 we save money next year but then we have a $9 million charge in 2027. Not debilitating considering the amount of room we have but still not ideal. If we release him before June 1 we have a $22 million cap hit next year and then we are free of him in 2027. No matter what it makes way more sense to get rid of him both on the field and in the books. Depends on how much Mougs wants to eat.
This is something we can agree on. Howell makes a lot more sense especially "if" this team intends to try and snap the "unicorn" that is a FQB in NY Jets green! Mac Jones is going to want to sign a very lucrative long term contract and he has earned it. He's looked pretty damn good but, as the astute observers in this thread have pointed out, he'll need to be in a Shanahan style offense to be truly good. To be frank, I think J.J. McCarthy shits the bed in Minnesota and you see Mac Jones throwing for McConnell next year. No way SF can afford to keep him after giving Purdy his bag.
Shanahan system is just so nice for QBs, there is a reason he can plug a 7th rounder into it. Mac Jones ugh, maybe for a bridge, I really don't want a rookie to start next year. He probably knows he may be a product of a system though and wants to cash in with some brainless organization... Yeah we will probably sign him.
I saw Kyler Murray just got put on IR and according to stuff I have read it seems like his time in Arizona may be up - given the size of his contract I really hope the Jets don't decide to take a flyer on him - especially if they need to give up a premium pick to do so
