Honestly, thinking back through our former defensive HC’s over the last couple decades I can’t envision that any of them would have been onboard with trading the two best defensive players on the team, both of whom are amongst the best in the league and relatively young. Could you imagine Rex in this situation? Bowles or Saleh? Herm? Pretty sure they’d be losing their shit. So what is Glenn’s feeling on this really? Do we have a HC that actually sees that you need a competent and powerful offense to win, even though he has a defensive background? Is Glenn just so confident in himself that he feels his D can be great without elite players? Orrrrr…. Did Mougey just pull the rug out from under Glenn? Mougey has no ties to Glenn, he didn’t hire him. We’re back to the old format where the Coach reports direct to Woody, not through the GM. To me these trades could signal a potential one and done year for Glenn just as much as it could signal his job being safe.
He's never coached a good defense, Lions are better on D this year. He played defense well so I guess there is that. Woody called Moug Glenn's sidekick, pretty sure Glenn was in on the decisions but man I hope you are right and Moug gets Glenn out of there.
These decisions weren't made in a vacuum. Of course, Glenn had a hand in these trades, but Mougey probably was the architect. Looking at the return, I think they did great. If we're lucky, Mougey isn't Idzik 2.0 and we actually reap some real talent for once. Considering they passed on a KC 4th for Hall was probably Glenn not handicapping a developing OC's system being installed.
The only reason I want to believe it was more Moug is because I don't even know how Glenn ties his shoes. I actually like Moug a lot, the returns he got were incredible, hell I like Engstrand a lot too, he's shown some real flashes. The defense is awful and any gains before the Bengals game dried up that game but the offense looks like it has hope. HC however has single handedly lost games this year, HC can't do that no matter what. These players are adults with eyes and brains, they won't put up with it for long.
I think they intend to sign Breece long term. I think the entire OL, Garrett, and Breece were not on the table for trade talks. This was clearly a move to be ready to improve our Offense at the expense of key defensive pieces. I’ve not seen too many defensive minded coaches being onboard with stripping the defense..
I’m sure he was in on these decisions based off of everything we know about their relationship. Also a reminder that Glenn started as a scout per the advice of Bill Parcells. The Detroit defense was the youngest in the league by the end of his tenure and they were made up of draft picks and FA signings. They still finished with one of the best defenses in the league. You'd have to assume that the DC was involved in the scouting of draft picks and free agents. Again... there's plenty of ways this can go wrong but Aaron Glenn being involved is not a cause for concern IMO.
Have you watched a single presser? End of half 2 minute drills? When he defies all analytics 3 or 4 times a game?
Glenn was involved yeah. I was listening to the Hughes/Rosenblatt podcast yesterday and they said he had a hand in these decisions. They also said Quinnen and Glenn didn't get along very well which I found interesting. The implication was that Quinnen thought Glenn was too much of a hardass and didn't want to put up with him after all the years of losing. I have not liked what I've seen from Glenn overall so far. Bad game management, bad situational awareness, seemingly random 4th down decisions, the decision to not even attempt a Hail Mary before halftime. There's been a lot of bad and frankly he just seems overwhelmed. I do like that he's not a player's coach like Saleh, but that's about all the good I can say at this point. I hope he proves me wrong but I don't think he's the guy.
You said in your last sentence that Glenn is not a concern in you opinion, I genuinely want to know how that's possible.
Yeah, Mougey said specifically that they had values on all of their players and these two trades the other team made their offer “too good to pass up”, and he did say they got calls for Hall and JJ but the offers weren’t good enough That is a good sign on a GM…looks like he had a value and stuck to his guns
I didn’t think he was the guy from the moment he interviewed…though admittedly that’s because I am just so fucking over hiring first time DC’s in a fucking passing league on a team that NEEDs a QB to be developed in the worst possible way. Just looking at the fact that Detroit’s success was NOT based on their D at all, looking at the fact that we haven’t hired a guy who understands how to build an offense, that was enough for me. The results so far are honestly worse than I expected though…we hired a DC and our D has sucked in this new system… I was predicting about 5 wins give or take a game, and I don’t think we’ll get there…so yah…
We're talking about him being involved in trades and scouting. I have no concerns with him being in on decisions that involve talent evaluation.
