Maybe if he was the Sauce from a few years back. Fact is, he's not the best CB in the game anymore. He doesn't blitz. He doesn't tackle very well. His coverage skills have diminished and honestly, he wasn't playing up to his all-world contract. Mougie did the right thing. He can move a few more names before today is over. Quincy Williams can be moved. For the right price, Breece can be moved too. There is NOBODY on this roster that is untouchable except Garrett Wilson and Mason Taylor. We're 1-7, not 7-1. Its already next year...
I think that's it. The old Bill Parcells thing that everyone has a price. I doubt they sought to trade Sauce, but when an offer like that comes along, you do it. Plus, he's an old regime pick and they invested heavily in CB this year. It was already increasingly clear they had a surplus at CB with how AZ Thomas and Stephens have looked along with decent play from Sauce. So for those thinking Breece is gone, I doubt it unless somebody comes through with a huge offer. They're not giving him up for a 4th. And unlike CB, they have absolutely nothing behind Isaiah Davis.
At 1-7 with very little talent on your roster you shouldn't trade your best defender that is in his prime and under contract for 5 solid years. Now instead of that we have to hope we hit on two more picks over the course of two years. I don't think Mougs will even be here to make the 2027 pick.
They won, but the defense generally sucked. They must really like Azareah, otherwise they wouldn't have made this trade.
I'm looking at AFC East rival message boards and it's almost universal that the Jets absolutely fleeced the Colts in this deal. I can't find a single reaction along the lines of, "glad we don't have to play him twice a year anymore". The vast majority are incredulity that someone gave up two 1sts in a deadline deal for a CB who hasn't lived up to his rookie reputation and is making a ton of money already. AFC East fans reactions on the whole are upset that the Jets got so much in return.
I appreciate their taking swings at WR too between Mitchell and Metchie. Probably will amount to nothing, but those are the types of guys to take fliers on when there's almost no price tag
Yep and I've been on here every day talking about keeping Breece Hall but yeah there's a price to everything, if someone offered a big building block for him you trade him. But people have been operating under Connor Hughes' assumption about a 5th round pick LOL
This would be awesome if we all were not 100% sure they will fuck the picks up. I dunno man, this sucks imo. Draft picks are a waste on this team, so are superstars apparently. Just burn the fucking thing to the ground.
They may have been impressed with the lack of PI's called against the kid while covering one of the premier WR's in the game.
this is insanely good deal for Jets. why would we want to continue to pay $120MM and jam up our cap for a cornerback who has 3 career interceptions. That's absurd. He doesnt even get turnovers which is where value should lie for a corner. Understood he is exceptional and value add, but a great corner is a luxury item best utilized on a good team. Does nothing for a dreadful team and jams our cap. Cant pay that much money for 3 career interceptions. Two firsts is huge building block.
I think this stuff is overrated in general but Mitchell really is an insane athlete. 6th best athlete out of the past ~3,000 WR prospects. Whether he can play WR well is another question but this is the type of guy you take a chance on, especially when your WR room is as bereft as ours is.
I think it's a good move based on where the Jets are rn. Got a lot in return, shed a lot of cap. Also left a hole, however.
Think about this: the Jets have turned over the entire starting cornerback room in one year and they are still really good.
I'm sure we can lose without him just as well as we lost with him. I still believe you build a team from the inside out, and CB is the extreme of "out", while this team needs everything other than OTs.
Our corners are trash, our defense is trash, how is it better? Flacco just hung almost 50 points on us.
This is the best Jets news in quite some time. Gardner is overrated, gets beaten in every game by average receivers and can barely tackle (Deion minus the coverage skills).
Sorry….I disagree with this take. At some point, you have to start building a team, and you have to start building it around good players…if we keep losing, and we keep falling back on this philosophy of “well we are losing anyway so everyone can go” then you’ll NEVER get to build a team because you are just trading away home grown talent and creating more holes to fill. We will never get off the hump. It’s not like we have Bill fucking Polian at GM (the guy who built the Bills, Colts, and early Panthers)…we have a newbie Mougey…we’ll see how he ends up. I hate the fact that we have been SO crappy at drafting, and then when we actually draft some great players, we trade them all away…we did it with Keyshawn who was a tone setter, we did it with John Abraham because OMG he got hurt,we did it with Revis because oh my goodness he actually wanted to get paid, and we are now doing it with Sauce and the excuses come about how we are losing and about how he can’t tackle…we’ve all heard these excuses so many times over and over and I’m still waiting for the fucking rebuild. All of those players went on to have great success…they could’ve had it here but our fucking GMs thought they were so smart. They all went on to success and we continued to suck. And then you wonder why players in their prime don’t want to come here…we give bullshit lip service to “building a culture”…yeah ok…the only culture we’re building is we don’t give a shit about winning or playing great…we will get rid of you regardless. And yeah, the one win did come with him on the sideline…great…I saw we gave up 38 fucking points so that win wasn’t due to any defense on our part…it came about because the Bengals’ D is actually maybe even worse than ours. I don’t know…again, I like the 2 first rounders if that’s all true, so hard to get TOO upset, but I just hate seeing us get rid of good players when we have so precious few of them. And home grown too. This team rots from the inside, from the top on down…and it never changes.
Because we couldn't pressure him. You can have average corners if you can consistently apply pressure on the QB. On the other hand, if you give pretty much any NFL QB all day to throw, they will beat you even if you have Pro Bowl corners.
