Corrected, Sam would have still been awful here if he'd stayed; it isn't like he left and then immediately became decent. Not taking the 49ers boat load of picks was a massive error, not that they have done the fish any good.
He became decent after he got a good coach, weapons, and solid OL. Something that JD should have given him here instead of the worst supporting cast in NFL history.
True, so he wouldn't have got that here either and still would have been poor if we had kept him on his 5th year option.
Just threw 4th TD before the half on Sunday night football. Fuck JD. Already had a FQB and pissed it away. The worst and most damaging GM we ever had.
Sam showed glimpses when he was with the Jets. His processing speed held him back, but with good coaching, he's improved in that regard. He freaking deadly when given time to throw. Sobering stats - His 282 yards in the 1st half is just 1 yard less than Fields best game (283 vs Dallas). His 4 tds in the first half is just 1 less than Fields has for the entire season (5 tds/7 games).
Would have also helped if JD didn't give him the worst supporting case in NFL history. Btw. JSN seems to be doing pretty well too. That's whom everyone on this board wanted in the McD draft. Of course JD pissed him away as well.
I actually posted at the time how they should keep/build around Darnold, draft Sewell, build the offensive live. The one time I would have been right. Haha. Jamar Chase with Darnold would also have likely yielded some success. Oh well, this is the life we accept as a Jets fans.
I didn’t even love Darnold, but it was so obvious that taking the SF trade offer and hanging onto Darnold for at least one more season was the right move. We needed so much help and besides the fact I felt Zach was garbage and should not have been a 1st round pick at all, I knew we would be putting him into the same situation as Sam was with a talentless team. We needed those picks to build a solid young foundation and JD blew it on a one year wonderboy from BYU who played against the shittiest of competition with no crowds.
but you know that isn't true, he would be as of now but he went through two mopre seasons before his good one at the Vikings and even then they still fucked him off as well, I bet they are also full of regret. Though, if we hadn't shit all over him then he may have become what he is now sooner but we will never know for sure.
The biggest problem was that JD gave Sam historically bad supporting cast when he got there. And this is not just hyperbole. 3 top weapons he had (WR1, TE1, and RB1) combined for about 300 total yards for the rest of the careers. You heard it right - for the rest of their careers combined. I don't know if any QB had to deal with this kind of lack of weapons. Some were washed up and some were just pathetic scrubs who don't belong on NFL roster. Plus a bad OL. The year before Sam had Robbie Anderson as WR#1, who is really WR#3, and even that little he had JD got rid of. How can ANYONE develop into FQB with this supporting cast? It simply cannot be done. And what's sad is that we have been looking for a talent like this ever since Joe Namath. Mac somehow stumbled into the right guy we searched for decades. JD put him in historically bad position to fail, and then traded him away. In other words JD was handed the talent we searched for decades for on a sliver platter, and pissed it away. Unforgivable back breaking mistake by probably the worst and most damaging piece of shit GM in Jets history.
Agreed…combine the roster management with the coaching…the (what feels like) millionth rookie DC hired as head coach…dude like that is trying to learn the ropes of being an NFL HC, which is hard enough, and then couple that with the burden of having to identify and develop a rookie QB when the HC is from the other side of the ball…very hard to do. And Woody keeps doing the same shit over and over and over and over. So here we are yet again with another front row seat to this movie, that we’ve ALL seen a million times before. We are going to have a top 5 pick most likely…not sure where in that order we will sit as Tennessee and NO both suck as well. And it doesn’t matter if Tennessee doesn’t need a QB, because if they get the first overall pick ahead of us, they will almost certainly trade out to a QB needy team. In typical Jets fashion, we probably will win one or two additional games to screw us out of the top overall pick, and we can all already see how this will go. We will somehow manage to draft the wrong QB, and that will be some combination of not picking the right guy on top of asking a defensive coach like AG to somehow guide the development of said QB. This has NOT worked for us at all. Didn’t work with Sanchez, Darnold, or Wilson. Won’t work with the next unlucky guy to fall into this death spiral. It all boils down to I fucking HATE Woody…he is a stupid, idiotic, incompetent, out of touch mofo. I have nothing nice to say about such a stupid imbecile who has fallen into wealth through no doing of his own and has ruined our favorite team.
Won't know for sure, but it is pretty obvious now all the guy needed is a good environment around him. As soon as that happened, he was good. Minny was just stupid. Sam was a legitimate young Pro Bowl QB for them, not one of these alternates who only get invited because top QBs don't want to play in Pro Bowl. Sam was a top QB, and all stats backed that as well. It wasn't because of performance they moved on, they just spent top 10 pick on a QB they traded up for and thought it would make them look stupid to give up on McCarthy early. Ironically in an effort to avoid looking stupid they ended up being exactly that.
