You actually believe the London market is a deeper well for the NFL than the New York market? Really?
I wouldn’t say that’s a fair comparison. The real question is whether the London market is deeper than 1/3rd of the NY market, which is about what the Jets hold compared to the Giants. Given how much the NFL clearly wants to go global, the Jets do make some sense. They’ve never really had a home in NY and quite frankly the NY market is not what it used to be and more than likely going to continue to decline.
Yea New York teams haven’t won anything in over a decade…unless you count the WNBA…and that somehow makes it feel worse.
Good morning, class. Today I'm going to give you all an art lesson. Today's topic is composition. On the bottom left, we have a beat writer responding to the words of Woody Johnson. His posture is remindful of Luke's surprise in Carravaggio's 'The Supper at Emmaus'. Note the perspective and how his gesticulation challenges the frame of reference. Woody Johnson appears center left, lending interest to the point of view. His own point of view, however, is that of a jackass, and unlike Christ revealing himself to Cleopas and Luke in 'The Supper at Emmaus', no one is surprised. The female figure on the right takes on the role of the groomsman here, who in Carravaggio's rendering, is bathed in shadow and appears unaffected and oblivious to the enormity of the event. Here, she is dumbstruck by Woody Johnson's mewling and appears to be a little drunk. She represents the Jets fan in all of us.
Whichever reporter that broke the news of Woody's comments to Fields in the presser, is also a massive cunt. Guy sounded like he was really enjoying kicking Fields in the balls. Awful presser.
Yeah, and yesterday the Giants sold ten percent of their team and got a billion dollars for it. How does that put the New York market in decline? Your one third figure is way off - just last month CNBC put the value of the Jets at 9.1 billion dollars. And the London market may be deeper than New York in eating sauteed tomatoes and beans for breakfast but not for American football! How can anyone seriously make a case for the Jets moving from NY to anywhere, much less London?
Disagree 100%. It is news when a business owner comments about the performance of key personnel. It would be dereliction of reportorial duty to ignore those comments. Kind of like if your king told Laura Kuenssberg he was going to demolish half of Buckingham Palace to put up a stable for his ponies and she sat on the information.
But really, it isn't anything like that at all, is it? Reporter was just trying to embarrass him, if it was on social media, he'd be accused of doing it for clicks. Besides do you really believe not one person had told him what the baby powder kid had said?
Amen. Woody Johnson won his biggest lottery by being born who he is. He won his second biggest lottery by owning a NFL sports property franchise in New York. He's not going to cut that lottery ticket in half. Entering the London market is much harder than one might think. There is an entrenched major sport with huge fanbases already there. London has seven Premier League teams in the city itself, not to count the major English soccer teams like Man U / Man City who are in some cases worth more than the Jets. Plus they are all backed by Middle East oil money, and those people have pockets deep enough that Woody will get lost in them. London is a huge untapped market, but it will definitely take some tapping and there is no guarantee of success. Better to let a franchise like Jacksonville fight that fight.
Of course it is. Reporters are supposed to ask tough questions and tell us what the principals have to say for themselves - that's their job! Direct quotes speak megadecibels louder than any unnamed "source". Whether it's a head of state destroying an historical landmark, a restaurant owner serving lousy food or an entertainment business constantly putting out an inferior product. Most often the owner won't give them anything worthy of being repeated but if he chooses to embarrass himself the reporter has an obligation to tell his customers about it, not sweep it under the rug. You do realize that Johnson had a summer job at the family business that supports him for just one season, so the baby powder references are somewhat meaningless, right?
