This was actually concerning longer term - OL was quite bad. Fields definitely held the ball for too long. Hard to tell which ones are on him and which ones are on OL, which ones on receivers, probably some on each. Fields missed a TD to GW too early. And not a week goes by without us leaving 7 on the board via fumble inside 10. Penalties again to take us from 1st and goal from 1 yard line to only 3 points. For the little good we saw, the bad was so much worse. This was a bottom 5 defense in the NFL. The offense has failed.

pretty sure it was close to 4 seconds he was holding onto the ball…could be wrong.

Hall had like 115 on 14 carries. These guys can run block. I’m starting to lean on Fields being the reason with pass pro, between holding onto the ball too long or taking sacks. He just doesn’t process the field as fast as he should. Any other QB (Mac Jones) would be slinging that ball out there as fast as he can. And I’m dead serious in believing the Jets should look at him for next season.

What is the basis for this though? Do you or anyone else have all 22 we can look at for this week? When someone does, please share here. Last time against Miami pretty much all the all 22 I could find pointed to mostly inability to pick up the blitz or protections breakdowns and no one was open. I didn't really see many instances (actually none on the footage I found but there may be some where I could not get my hands on) where Fields should have gotten rid of the ball to open receiver but he held on. This time you are probably right, but I do want to see it to make informed conclusion.

I am worried that unlike the years past we might have an acceptable QB play this time (not great but maybe averagish starter?) and will get rid of him to waste a top 3 pick and ruin the next guy because of other reasons. Kinda like when we got rid of Sam.

Considering he's got the third most time to throw of any starting QB and he's also got a history of holding the ball for too long, it's very safe and logical to assume that a big part of our pass protection "problems" is because the QB has no idea what to do when his first read isn't open.

I kind of agree with this...Fields is almost the least of the Jets worries. Let's get a legit blocking TE, and more than 1 NFL caliber WR first and if the QB is the issue the Jets would still be able to pick up a QB (say 2027 draft) with a top pick.

Dude…come on already. Fields is the problem. A very big part of it. The offense doesn’t click because he can’t pull the trigger and anticipate throws and holds the ball too long. It’s just a painful thing to watch. It doesn’t flow, it is a struggle every drive. There is a reason he looks so much better with the game out of hand in the 4th quarter.

You can look at all the game film you want, but we’ve seen that this is who he is for 4 years now…it ain’t changing. At least not with this rookie coaching staff.

He is not good. He is a GREAT runner and he has a strong arm, but in this game, you need to see the field and anticipate receiver routes and throw them open. He doesn’t do that. He needs the receiver to BE open and THEN he throws it. It doesn’t work.

He is not our BIGGEST problem, because your point about fumbling the ball in the red zone multiple times already is a HUGE issue, and the defense is a HUGE issue as well. But Fields is not the answer…he is a part of the problem. At least he’s not throwing 2 picks per game…though then that would make it obvious that he has to go. This is a little more subtle. But I see the same struggles we all saw when Zach was our QB…every drive is a struggle…we have to play perfect ball everywhere else and try and pull together long drives because passes are so hard to complete until the other team plays soft in the 4th quarter with a big lead and our QB at least is good enough to take what the D is giving him, but back to the point, we clearly can’t play perfect ball for long drives…we ALWAYS end up with a fumble or a key penalty.

This clearly isn’t working. It’s still crazy to me that we are averaging two fumbles per game over 5 games and we STILL don’t have a single takeaway. How the fuck does that happen????

AG is a problem. But so is Fields…

The receiving corps isn’t good and I’m not defending it but it looks like we have a viable tight end and we also have a star receiver along with one of the better receiving backs in the league.

This supporting skill position group is better than say the 2017-2019 Jets. Not great, but could be worse. And the QB needs to be running more. I’m not sure what this illusion is where we are trying to see if he can be a drop back pocket passer.

Agree on the TE…the only positives I can take away is that GW is a stud…he is literally the ONLY legit receiver we have and he is playing (and has pretty much always) played with shit QBs and yet he makes plays.

But the other positive is that this coaching staff finally saw that we have a TE that we drafted to catch the ball and now that they started feeding him the last two games he has come through. He’s played well and if he keeps this up, he’ll probably look like the best receiving TE we’ve had since Dustin Keller.

    Was happy to see that.

This OL looked shaky in pass protection yesterday but has been good at running, and if you have a back like Hall and a receiver like GW and now a third option in Taylor, a better QB should be producing more than what Fields is giving us

I am just not sure. I know he can't carry the team and is limited. Cannot win a shootout. I am looking for adequate passing and great running as a baseline. That's why I want to look at the film and make informed conclusions. In this game I do think he held the ball too long at times. I definitely saw he missed a TD to GW. But OL looked terrible, and it did not look like it was because of him for the most part. They just stink. That's why I want to see more film. If he id a problem, I still do not think he is on the same level a problem as AG, very much down on that list. I do not want another Sam scenario.

Said this to someone at the game yesterday. Only the Jets would sign a guy who is one of the best running QBs in history that can't process the field and make him process the field.

What do you think about this one, guys. This is after we fumble instead of tying the game, and Dallas scores 7. Now up by 14. Pivotal play, 2nd and 10. If Fields is able to throw to Taylor, he probably gets 8 yards with YAC, and it is 3d and short. Maybe even a 1st down. Instead he takes a sack.

I freeze framed it at 6:27, this is where Fields should have started throwing as Taylor starts to turn. I see a guy unblocked right in his face at that time. Could he still throw? To me looks like a very tough ask, but want to know your guys thoughts. Essentially after this sack we go 3 and out, and they score a TD and the game is over. If we get 8 yards there, chances are we are still in the game (more or less) at least at the half.

Who do you think this on?

The ball should have been out of his hands before the pressure was in his face because Arian Smith was wide open, turned and facing the QB. Reeks of another case of the classic Fields "lock on to his first read" syndrome. If he scans the field he sees Taylor covered and Smith's man dropping to cover Reynolds. He had at least 3 seconds to get that ball out.

Our OL is the least of our worries, our QB who can't read a defense or compelte a basic timing pattern remains the bigger issue. The bills wer blitzing their Cb's vs us for crying out loud ahahahah

If he is reading from right to left, which it sure looks that way, there is no way he can get to Smith on time. Smith was probably the 3d option there. Also Taylor was not covered, he got open as expected, the plays take a little to develop. He should not have abandoned that read. To me it is a question of whether he was able to pull the trigger before the pressure got there, and it got there quick. I think a really good top 5 QB maybe gets it off. Bit not sure most will.

Another point is, maybe Smith SHOULD be 1st read more often. He did get open quicker than Taylor.

And that's one I see a lot when people say, there are a lot of wide open receivers. They may be open, but if they are not your primary or secondary read and pressure gets there quickly, it does not help much if they are open or not. And above was a good example where it looks like Arian Smith does get open, but not one of the primary reads. As @Jonathan_Vilma said, maybe we should give the kid with a rocket up his ass a bit more opportunities.

It is cringeworthy trying to watch Fields drop back and pass. It literally gives me anxiety.

It is as rough as rough gets. Poor form, slow to process, just ugly as all hell. And this is his 5th year as a professional. It is shocking

YES. they need to stop trying to play him like Jared Goff. They should think about what would happen if they didn't have a single QB on the roster and a RB had to take the snaps.

How would you approach play-calling and play design then? Well you would do a lot of roll outs, and designed runs, passing would be 1 quick read and go. a simple offense. DO that

Im sure there are plenty of plays like this

He cant read the field…he has never been able to do it

I honestly don’t give a shit if it’s his first read or 5th read…a good QB has a feel for these things and will find the open man more often than not. A good QB walks up to the line and already has a feel for where to look.

Our OL isn’t great at pass blocking, but I fully believe that a big part of that is Fields.

He is NOT a good QB. He is a good runner with a strong arm. Not the same thing.

Two teams saw this…Pitts saw it after like what, 6 games?

We’re also near the bottom of the league in play action which makes no sense.

Im mostly serious when I say this… I’m not sure the coaching staff trusts him to be able to look away from the secondary and then turn around, look at it, process it and make a play.
