How was race involved when key was LOVED by jet fans? Eveen after the book he was a fan favorite. He didn't become hated until he left.
I don't think he was as loved as he would have been if he were white, or in other words, Chrebet. I think that's what bothered Keyshawn. A lot of it was the fact that Chrebet was a local, undrafted free agent and Key was the #1 pick in the draft, too. But I do think race was a factor for a lot of people, especially because he was outspoken. The obvious comparison now is Jeremy Shockey, who is a lot more popular with the media and fans. He has just as big a mouth as Keyshawn had, if not bigger, except Shockey comes up small in big moments as opposed to Keyshawn, who came up big. And there is no Chrebet character on the Giants to make Shockey look bad, if anything Plaxico takes a lot of the heat Shockey should get.
Key is bigger than shockey. I do agree race had something to do w/ wayne being so popular. people thought of him as an average guy doing things they wish they could do. When they see a Key they know they can't do things he could do but b/c Wayne was short and white they thought they could do things he could even though they didn't realize just how strong and athletic wayne was. wayne's lack of athleticism is a big myth.
