If Nwangwu has to go on IR, there has to be some other player on another PS that we can sign to active roster that is better than Gipson aside from Pritchett, who needs to be added to active roster. Maybe PS, but the guy is not a rosterable player. The whole reason for keeping him is that Glenn suggested he fixed the TO issue. He did not and it cost us the game. It should be pretty simple at this point.
Take a look why Gipson stumbles here: https://x.com/Michael_Nania/status/1965036178970947975 He is trying to stiff arm the cutter who is not even there and loses balance because of it. If he just runs to his right, it's a TD.
He was also carrying the ball in the wrong arm, something they teach football players in pee wee football , if after 9 fumbles he didn't learn why was he still on this team? He better be cut this week, there is no reason why he should have any capacity on this team! That fumble totally shifted momentum to the Pitt side, if he don't choke up the ball there 95% chance we win. Gipson has 10 fumbles so far in 3 years, Leon Washington had 2 fumbles returning his whole career. At this point he is a huge liabilty and brings absolutely no value to the team.
Funny, but I've often wondered why teams don't go with a RB returning KO's. Leon Johnson was dangerous as he wasn't fast, but he was big enough to hurt folks when he got up to speed. Conservation of momentum and all that. Why not let Braelon return a KO just for kicks. I'd love to see a ST guy trying to bring Braelon down once he gets up to speed.
I posted in another thread, he has 11 fumbles. He threw the ball away on the play where he tripped on his own feet instead of scoring a return TD and threw away the ball, but the Jets recovered. If Pitt recovered, it would have been overturned. It's a pretty easy call at this point to get rid of him. Now, as far as the roster mechanics, I am not sure if I have to sign Pritchett to active roster now to make sure no one signs him away to their active roster, but I do know if someone wants to sign a PS guy from any team to their active roster, they have a right to do it. Granted I do not anticipate the demand for Prit, but given we have one guy injured and Gipson proven failure, might as well secure him soon.
No. He was not trying to stiff arm anyone; he also did not fumble. I have seen a number of posts making those claims but they are wrong. That all 22 view is useless in determining what happened from the high and wide point of view but the game broadcast, which I had on the DVR, replayed the action from a close and low sideline angle. I've looked at it a number of times, perhaps Nania should do the same before making his erroneous comments and including video which is incapable of proving his claims. Here's what actually happened: As Gipson was beginning to break into the clear going straight ahead # 51, Mauigoa. was to his left engaged with a Steeler who was pushing Mauigoa backwards into Gipson's path. It was then that Gipson put out his left hand to the lower back of Mauigoa to stabilize both of them as he passed behind and to the right of him. As he cleared them another Steeler, who may have been screened from Gipson's view by Mauigoa and his opponent emerged to make a play on Gipson who attempted a strong cut to the right to escape, which is when he went down. There appeared to be no contact at all between that player and Gipson when a whistle blew ending the play, apparently because Gipson made no attempt to get up and hence, "gave himself up." Gipson did enough later to possibly lose his job but cannot be faulted for the play in question.
I will take your word for it, we will stick with the official 10 fumble count. Still, I think it's Pritchett's turn.
Honestly for kick returns I’d just put Braelon Allen back there. You’d be giving a 245lb RB 10 yards of full steam. He just pinballs out to the 35 yard line, that’s good enough for me punt returns are different though, Idk who could be trusted to take Gipsons spot
Looks like they signed Keilan Robinson to PS, kick returner. Chances are Robinson and Pritchett will be on active roster this week, even if Gipson is not waived. Decision could then follow depending on how they do.
I thought teams would do that more by now because of the chance of higher average return yards, but they are mostly still trying their luck with little speedsters from what I have noticed.
Yeah that is a good idea although I doubt the Jets will retain Breece Hall past this year, so if Braelon takes a big hit and has a major injury that is going to suck for our future, kick returns don't matter that much and chances are that Braelon is our #1 running back next year. It's to much to risk just to gain a couple extra yards. All we need is some guy who is not prone to freakin fumbling the ball like Gipson and choking games for us. He doesn't have to be electryfying and score touchdowns. 11 fumbles in 2 years and 1 game is ridiculous.
The bigger backs probably won’t get up to speed quick enough to get to the blockers and will get tripped up before they really get going. Kaleb Johnson was back there for the Steelers in a similar mold and only averaged 26.4 yards per return. The Jets were up to 29.4. Anecdotal but I’d guess that’s why teams don’t see the value on it. Plus you probably lose Allen for 3 plays to start the drive.
Gipson is being released per Coz of the NYP. Good fucking riddance. If we did it two weeks ago when we should have, or a year ago when we should have, we are probably 1-0 right now. Big gaffe from all who were in on the decision. But I’ll take the show of accountability for now, Glenn said it and meant it.
Wow. Further evidence Aaron Glenn is no BS. Seems harsh on the surface, but that carelessness with the football is far from a one-off for him going back to last year. Can't survive in this league doing stuff like that Kind of a sad full-circle experience for him, from opening day hero in 2023 to largely giving the game away on opening day 2025. Curious what this means for the return jobs. If Nwangwu is healthy, you presume it's him, but if not do they call up Pritchett in a corresponding move or give Arian Smith more opportunities
https://nypost.com/2025/09/10/sport...pson-after-costly-fumble-in-loss-to-steelers/ Maybe there will be some accountability
He doesn’t add anything to any element of the team except the return game. He’s also not very explosive in that fashion either. He was a nice story, but easily upgradable.
Names in terms of options for kick returner? They put Arian Smith back there and with his speed I could see it. They could also call up Pritchett from the practice squad considering he’s familiar with the staff and team already. The good news is it’s going to be pretty hard to downgrade from a guy who fumbled 10 times in three years.
Best news is that this release cements Aaron Glenn's credibility with the roster and the NY Jet Nation. He means exactly what he says and "walks the talk".
