Which is why I didn't understand the point about having more missed reads than Hurts in that game, which separates the two. Over the career, sure, but not yesterday. But we both agree he was fantastic, and can leave it at that. That wasn't my take at all. And also, not to nitpick, because I like Hurts and I want Fields ultimately become like him, but Hurts does not have 3 TDs no TOs, no TO worthy throws, 73% completion, 34 points, and 119 QB rating every single week.
So we can only talk about one game at a time, not the three years of games before that? Those are the rules? Ridiculous. Again if you wanna erase someone's entire body of work and start forming your opinion yesterday, that's not a convo I have a desire to be part of.
Check the subject line on this thread, we are talking about week 1. That's what I thought you were talking about. No one is suggesting Fields is Hurts over their careers.
Funny I know a lot of people hated the DE pick, but I really do think you can never have too many pass rushers. I did not crush JD for that pick. Yes we needed OL more. No question. But what I did like about JD was I think he had the right strategy in how to build a team…he invested high picks into impactful positions…spent a bunch on OL, DL, and then WR and CB. Those are the right positions to pick. Now the actual players chosen…well that’s where he failed. But the thinking was right. So far, McD looked good last year and he had a good game yesterday as well…if he can keep it up it’ll turn out to have been a good pick.
Count me as a Fields doubter. I was quite impressed by him yesterday. That one pass to Garrett that you mention was the only throw that made me think "ohhh" and that was a completion. What I took from yesterday was that he's a playmaker. His accuracy on several contested throws surprised me. Hate to bring him up as a comparison, but put Zach in those situations and yesterday is an uncontested loss. Fields gave us a shot. The rest of the team should have rewarded him.
Yea and I said multiple times he was fantastic THIS WEEK. And also talked about the missed reads THIS WEEK.
I think this is as close to a perfect game you as you can get. May have been the best QB performance by a Jet QB in a few years and rewarded with a win. Not a very high bar to clear, but still... That one throw was slightly off, but still within the radius, which is the most important thing. Every throw he had not completed was either batted, throw away, or a drop, including the 2 point conversion, which actually hit GW in the hands in spite of coverage. There were really no misses, and quite a few high end throws.
People complaining about Fields is hilarious to me. We put up 32 points. This is on the defense. Can't give up 34 points, lose the turnover battle and win in most cases. Also, the 2 point play in the first quarter was the right call. You always go for 2 from the 1 yard line. Maybe the play call wasn't great but it's a high percentage chance you get that one yard most of the time.
We lost because Gipson fumbled the ball. The only way we were going to lose that game going into 4Q would be to fumble a kickoff after a Steeler TD, and of course that's exactly what we did. Otherwise how refreshing to watch a game NOT called by Hackett. Refreshing to have a competent O line. Refreshing to have only an annoying amount of penalties (7/74) instead of an absurd, ungodly amount. I mean overall it wasn't torture. Not bad for us. I'm vaguely encouraged.
Parking was a disaster. Came in from Route 3. Was directed to go around and through the Mall. Traffic / Parking personnel didn't have a clue. I asked one attendant how to get to a Gold parking lot. She said she didn't know and to park wherever we found an empty space. Ended up parking in lot F. Got into stadium mid first quarter.
Btw, I remember some folks didn't like Engstrand hiring because Campbell didn't retain him in favor of Morten, and he would have known better. Well, that could have been a mistake - at least according to their fans: https://thedenforum.com/t/fire-morten/44253 Engstrand while wasn't perfect was a bright spot for us.
We chose the garage to avoid the rain, snuck the grill out, sat undercover for three hours, ate, it all worked out. It then took an hour to get out of the garage because somehow, they thought the best option was to only open the gates for one lane at a time for 10 seconds at a time. Fuckin baffling how they manage to make the worst game day experience even worse year after year.
For the people (and it's really only two of them who won't shut the fuck up about it) that swore Aaron Rodgers was slinging it yesterday... this is what the defense looked like on all 4 TD passes. Three of them, not a defender with in five yards. The fourth, a touch pass behind the LOS. He still threw the ball, he still got the win, but to act like this guy shredded us and he's back to being Aaron Rodgers is bullshit national headline fodder.
our rookie HC our KR and their kicker, and the fact that all Rodegrs TD throws were easy as shit the Jets have none of my respect at all until they earns some. 0-1 cos SOJ
my angle is... di GW NOT KNOW he was going to get hit??? to me pro WR#1 drafted THAT high? means you gotta know to use your body to shield the ball and ensure the 1st down.
Been waiting for this post so I could save myself a LOT of typing. The NY Jets lost this game because Gipson put the ball on the ground on our side of the field. Period. I don't want to hear about 2 point conversions yada yada yada. Damn time we have some aggressive coaching. That game should have ended with a "W" full stop. I was very impressed with Fields and I hope he continues to grow. They have GOT to find a #2 receiver though. They simply can't have Fields running 10+ times a game and expect he'll last the whole season. I'd love to know why Lazard wasn't on the field. Same as the rest of you, they need to give some of the other corners a shot. I don't care what they paid for the new guys, if you can't get the job done you'll be polishing the pine. Overall, I think the Jets opened some eyes, league wide, yesterday and, if some thought they were going to be an easy out this year, that thinking has been shot to shit, at least for now. Let's face it, we're going to know a whole lot about where this team is next week. Freakin' Allen single handedly willed that team past Baltimore and, if our LB'ers and secondary don't get their heads out their asses, next week is going to be a "woodshed" moment. All in all, though, I think the Jets, FINALLY, look competent. Final thought: I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing how Glenn handles the penalties and the correction thereof. IMHO, that is the single most glaring component from the last regime I want, no MUST, be dealt with!!! This team, ACCOUNTABILITY must be enforced and the whole team/fan base NEED to see it happen. Have to say, I've moved the needle just a little bit toward the "looking forward to the season" spot.
I didn’t read all this but already Glenn is strides ahead of the last guy(s) in terms of accountability. He was clear, direct, and noticeably angry about the penalties. There was no “we gotta watch the film” or “at least they are playing hard” like we’ve seen
