Perhaps throw the Steelers a curve ball and use GW as a decoy, then hit the TE for the 1st down?

The offense and Fields played better than expected.

Defense had trouble getting off the field and were undisciplined with penalties. A lot of breakdowns too in coverage, how many times did Rodgers find guys open who had no defenders within 5-10 yards.

Overall, it was a promising first game for a team that really is still rebuilding.

One glaring issue is the need for a WR#2 option.
Really think the Jets should have made a push to trade for Chris Olave this off-season.

They need to get Mason Taylor more involved.

You can't consistently just throw to Wilson who was trippled coverage on some plays.

I'd have to go back and watch it again, but couldn't have Feilds got the first on his own running it?

Fields and the offense played well. I didn't spend much time watching the game. The Jets lost.

With the Saleh CS in place, the Jets don't score much in this game and get blown out. That's my takeaway from this game.

He could have, he also looked like he had time to throw it longer but on the TV it was hard to see if anybody was even open, it looked like he ran and checked back to throw a hospital ball for Wilson.

Maybe he should have held on but I'd imagine it's hard to do so when somebody bigger than you hits you with a running start right in the back.

I don't watch football to be totally negative after the first game with a new regime, I mean what's the point? And this is coming from someone who has watched since the mid 80's.

Anyway there were definitely positives and negatives to be had here and overall I'd say glass half full. The big thing for me is how does the coaching staff, and AG in particular, respond to the negatives. Last few regimes didn't really respond at all and we just kept repeating the bad stuff over and over with the same post game platitudes.

    Positive:
Offense overall- great start for establishing an actual identity on this side of the ball
O line - restructured at the last minute and played well
Hall - looked like Breece of old, aggressive and powerful
Fields - couldn't have asked for more and had a nice connection with G Wilson

    Negative:
    X. Gibson - needs to be cut based on not just this game but his whole body of work
Penalties - were were promised better
3rd and long - a long time struggle for the Jets
Stephens - doesn't look like he's learned anything about turning back to the ball and he's gonna get us torched over and over

I'm sure there are more but those are my initial takes

For sure. He had a lot of options there and he hung Wilson out to dry but I still think our $130 million receiver has to catch that ball.

I think because he's Justin Fields he could have gotten that first but there were also two defenders there. Also have to credit Ramsey, that was a great hit. Just like there's no defense for a perfectly thrown ball sometimes... there's not always a way to shield yourself from a perfect hit.

Wouldn't Highsmith drop Hall if Fields hands it off? Or at least there is 50/50 whether he is going for Hall or Fields if this is predetermined? It's not clear based on the picture, but it looks like the defender got through and picked the right guy to tackle, not that Fields made a wrong read. It would be nice if the defender didn't get through to the backfield right away...

Nah Fields made the wrong read. The running backs momentum is going forward so you’re betting he can beat the end to the hole and they generally do.

Highsmith did play that about as good as possible though.

The stills probably don't tell the whole picture because if the RB is running full speed like Hall was, there's no defender on earth that's going to adjust in the split second he has to make the decision.

They should have just kicked the extra points instead of going for two. It would have been tied with a chance to win. The loss that hurt the most was losing D.J. Reed at corner. That was the big defensive hole. Excellent start for Fields hope the offense builds on this game.

    Agreed.

But everything I've read about the player, nobody is more pissed off he didn't come down with the ball is Wilson himself.

Wilson was open, he’s gotta hang onto that. There were 2 defenders converging on Fields so him getting a 1st was not a given. I don’t know what was going on downfield but Wilson was open and Fields hit him between the numbers. Protect the ball and absorb the hit, that’s his job.

I guess Sabo is right, but still, did Fields see the exact angle of the defender? Was he even supposed to be in the backfield so quickly? This just doesn't look like one of these obvious mistakes where you say, what a fuck-up! You know what does, that Rodgers pass to Stephens. Yes, a perfect pass to Stephens completely away from his target. I mean that was awful light perfect pass right into his hands, a back breaking play that should have ended the game.

Instead Stephens falls like a doofus and we are searching for some Fields imperfections. In a game where he looked every bit as good as Lamar/Hurts, while Rodgers was the one who actually made critical mistakes, which we did not take advantage of.

I think you're overreacting to the criticism pretty badly. No one is pretending this bad Fields play was any more devastating than Stephens' multiple bad plays or the Gipson fumble. When you run the offense we run the QB is gonna fuck up. That's why he's signing a two year bridge deal with us after being bounced by two teams. He's not Lamar/Hurts or he'd be Lamar and Hurts. He played great all day, he blew some reads. That's what separates him from the others. That doesn't mean anything other than he played great but made some mistakes.

Wilson was laid out to dry. You’d be hard pressed to find any receiver that hangs onto that.

there’s tough catches in traffic and then there’s this, a soft ball tossed his way while Jalen Ramsey is lined up perfectly to wreck him.

Criticizing Wilson for that is wrong. Some guys would not even try to catch that and drop to their knees

This play matches up with a lot of hospital balls we saw Fields throw Garrett over the summer.

What happened to our giant TE? Wouldn't have that been the perfect time to use him more or less? He's a lot bigger than GW and could have easily taken that blast from Ramsay.
