Our Neophyte Offense Coordinator was very raw, and his game calling showed that. He was intimidated by the SB Champ Eagle D and kept it extremely vanilla to the point of the offense not really showing the belonged on the same field but more like lining up against Montana St.

Seemed like his game plan was to play the same offense as he would with the starters. That is, GnP but when you don't have the pieces in place to do that? Try something different. Brady Cook probably is better than what he showed last night but the penalties (Yo Aaron...What about that???) killed too many early drives.

By the 4th and the game looking like it was over, our new OC decided he had nothing to lose and let loose the dawgs. THEN, the offense started to click and although it was against the Eagle 4th stringers and a few UDFA's, it was executed by our own scrubs so quality wise, it was a vast improvement. Damn near won the game and give Martinez credit, the man played like his roster spot was on the line. Probably because it was as Cook started and played the 1st half.

Tanner was the passing game coordinator in Motown. It shouldn't be that big a leap from that position to OC but so far, it's been a process for him as much as for the rest of the team. He'll learn as time goes on but we're gonna have to live with the growing pains and watching the GnP grind out more losses than wins.

Woody Johnson's penchant for always hiring 1st timers will once again, cause a multiyear ramp up to relevancy. It is what it is so there's no use bitching about it. This NY Jet team is a work in progress, and we'll will have to deal with it until the proverbial light comes on...

Meh. Both teams ran the same exact offense. It looked like they needed more evaluation on 9th and 10th offensive linemen and back tight ends and running backs moreso than they needed to see what the passing game can do.

It was a 3rd preseason game. This is pretty silly.

You run a vanilla offense in preseason on purpose

He called the game like a 1st time OC. When things got desperate, he opened up the offense and the team actually moved. Had he done this earlier, perhaps the Jets could have won this game. Like any other position, the OC has to learn how to call a game just as much as a QB has to know how to execute. Tanner is only 3 games in so there's time but lets all hope it does't take 17 games for him to "get the hang of it".

True, but when your real offense and the vanilla offense are very similar, that's a problem. When you haven't played in your primary offense, it may be a problem trying to do it when the real games start. Practice is one thing, but game experience is irreplaceable. We'll see when they go up against AR and the Squeelers.

I just hope Tanner is up to the challenge... I hope JF is too..

Maybe they should go back to 4 preseason games... 3 evidently isn't near enough time.

Because we've had so much success with veteran OCs

Who was our last veteran OC? Hackett I think. We haven't had a decent OC since John Morton waay back in the day? (Charlie Weis?)
Again, our new OC will have to learn to call games which shouldn't be that much of a problem. He tutored under a modern offensive master and now he's on his own. Not a small leap by any stretch especially with this roster.

Last night's game showed just how vulnerable our GnP offense is to a single False Start (or god forbid a 10 yrd holding penalty). Cook faced too many 1st and 20. We don't have a lot of 20 yard run plays, and it showed. But to your point, yes, it seemed very, very vanilla

Regardless of playcalling, I haven’t seen a whole lot to be excited about.

    Looking like another losing campaign.

The Giants are 3 and 0 in pre. Super Bowl for sure. I guess there is no need for the Jets to even play, 0 and 17 is likely based on the last two games.

I’m far less concerned with the fact that we were running a totally vanilla offense, far more concerned with the fact we looked like absolute shit doing it for all but one drive this entire preseason.

Teams are gonna force JF to throw. They will stack 8 until the offense shows it can attack it successfully. That's gonna be job 1 for our new OC. He's gonna have to develop a plan B and pray JF can execute it properly. I know AG wants a run first offense but when the run stops working, then what??

They might want to consider letting the pass setup the run instead of the run/run/pass in front of the marker/punt GnP they're playing now.

when was the last time we ran a boring offense in preseason and then came out gangbusters during the regular season? I don’t think it’s vanilla, we’re just not very good.

I feel you brother. I'm on your page. HOWEVER, Tanner IS a first time OC so I'm going to give him the pre-season to work out his own issues. The really unfortunate part about that, drawing a spotlight on WHY you don't hire first time OC's, is that, due to his own growing pains, we more than likely didn't get to see everything our fringe players have to offer. I mean, seriously, if you are learning the position yourself how are you going to draw up plays that help your players shine a light on their abilities.

We knew this was going to be a process. I'm just crossing my fingers he gets his "sea legs" under him before the 1st quarter of the season is in the books.
