So soon, meaning it is still training camp and we haven't really seen him play against real competition. I suppose we have seen, but only one drive, and he looked good. Just because the guy has 4 years of experience at 26 years old does not mean we should expect he immediately be perfect in a brand new system with rookie HC/OC coaches if he is any good. It will take time to see what we really got there. We will probably have an idea after 5-7 games, but right now it is way too early to tell. I hate to say this as we have been waiting for so long, but we need to be patient. Look at Goff, he was able to revive his career with these guys, but it took him some time too. And so far I think Fields has been solid in practice. Even today Blatt had him at "completing 7 of 11 passes in 11 on 11 today — and 3 of 5 in the final move the ball period — though that doesn't include plays that I logged as a sack. I had Fields sacked five times." He also had some good runs too. That does not seem all that bad, but sacks could be a problem, it appears OL was not good at all. And that is a real concern, especially when we have no weapons aside from GW.
Patient like we weren't with Darnold. I mean you could say that about Zach, but Darnold really was the chosen one - or at least it felt that way. I was never that pumped up for Zach Wilson. I've been OK with the acquisition of Fields even though I did not want to draft him years ago. It might just click now.
I really feel like we ruined Sam. The guy had no OL and Perriman as a WR1 (to downgrade from Anderson before) and Gase as his HC. This is just insanity what the Jets did to him. That Ghosts game I think caused irreparable damage. But, maybe there is a lesson to be learned here. Fields may not be beyond repair, and we need to have a good OL for him and some weapons. I thought we had OL covered, but Giants practice showed there is more work to do there. Hopefully it will be something these guys can get better from, because Fields cannot be taking 5 sacks a game and be expected to play well. Now, to be fair, this was a big step-up in competition for our OL. McD is not really a power guy and Clemons sucks. Btw, we really need JJ back on our DL as I don't think the Edges are that good, but this is a different point. Now OL has to go against likes of Carter, Burns, KT that are very well rounded. They were not used to it, and it is understandable why rookie Membou struggled. With that said, he needs to learn quickly or Fields will be another deer in the headlights. He does have a WR1 unlike Sam, but not much beyond that. And if OL will not give him time, it will be another bad situation.
I think patience with Fields is giving him the season to prove what he can do without clamoring for someone else. I wouldn’t go too far beyond that in the patience category. He could realistically be ruined already since he’s been hit so much, in/out of three teams and multiple systems by the end of this year. Fields really probably should’ve went to be a backup at a QB school like San Fran or Kansas City for a couple years to revive himself. If he fails here, his only option is to do that and hope he lands a Geno opportunity years from now.
That would be foolish. Tyrod is definitely the better thrower but he’s not the answer. Brady Cook probably won’t even be on the active roster. There is no replacement for Fields this season so pulling him does nothing except maybe make us more watchable. It is what it is for this year. Hopefully next year we have someone waiting in the wings if he stinks.
That's what I mean. There is no one answer. The idea that there is a great QB waiting in the wings if Fields struggles is to misunderstand the NFL. The Jets want to build around this QB. He certain skills that they can use to score points but the defense and specials have to do there job as well. Go Jets!
I don’t think they want to build around him. I think they’re seeing if they can. There’s no commitment past this year for a reason.
If Fields fails here he will be on his 4th team in 6 seasons. he simply can't fail here -- by the way I am glad Geno Smith gave those stupid seahawk fans the double bird. If anyone has a right to call him a bust its us, not the team he threw for 76 touchdowns with
Maybe so but they got him on a manageable contract. I think they really like what he brings. I do too.
https://x.com/PLeonardNYDN/status/1956037764664693231 "#Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux was asked for his evaluation of Justin Fields as a QB after 2 days of practices against the #Jets. Thibodeaux says he honestly can't give one because Fields had to spend so much time running and scrambling away from the Giants' pass rush" This is what I was talking about before, and while KT may have been braggadocios, it does line up with what others reported as well: OL really struggled in the joint practices. That to me is concerning, because with all due respect to our Edges, McD is a specialist and Clemons sucks. It's a little unsettling to hear how much pressure the Giants generated against our OL. And if cannot be fixed will impact the QB and the offense big time.
“NFL Memes” posted a montage of Justin Fields lowlight incompletions with the caption “Fields is lighting up Jets camp!”
The Giants arguably have one of the top pass rushing group in the entire league, and I fully expect the rookie to struggle with the likes of Burns and Carter. Kayvon was actually not that much of a factor. I’m glad they are facing the best and learn from it. We have the youngest duo of OT in the league and some growing pains are expected. I’m putting things in perspective and try to not over react to every practice, comment or stupid ass video like the cherry pick of Justin missed passes by some low life no body. We are coming off a dismal season and hopefully improve this year thru good coaching and discipline, but it will be a slower start that people hope for, ending the season with hopefully 7 to 9 victories. This team needs to jell together and it will take time. Anything more is super gravy.,
