No doubt, he will be another one that we let escape, then again every team let him escape multiple times, it was a shock that the Browns took him after taking the other one earlier in the draft.
I wonder if he would have even gotten a chance to really compete for the job had we taken a chance on him once he slipped. The new staff has seemed pretty locked in on the idea of rolling with Fields as the starter from the moment they got here.
I gave you the Glenn quote; you even gave back the "pencil" part. The messages were far from identical - almost 180 degrees apart. Mougey basically said the job belonged to Fields; Glenn said no one gets handed a job - they need to earn it. There is no reason to believe the general manager makes decisions on who plays in today's Jetland.
I'm simply not going to give credence to any discussion about Sanders after playing the first preseason game. Seriously people?
Relax I’m not crowning him. I said he looked good, I wish he was in our QB mix since we could’ve had him for nothing. I also feel the same about Jalen Milroe, who looked good for Seattle despite being drafted late and could be also providing some interesting competition right now. The two 5 rounders we actually took last night made little impact
This is all back in March, before training camp. I get it that it's written in pencil, things can always change, people can lose starting jobs, etc... That is clear without saying even and happens all the time. But that IS in fact the situation as BOTH said in March: Fields is the starter, Tyron on his heels. They are exactly on the same page. https://x.com/ZackBlatt/status/1906674287328498121 https://steelersdepot.com/2025/03/j...-starter-but-tyrod-taylor-right-on-his-heels/ Glenn: " Aaron Glenn on Justin Fields being the starter: "Just because you're 1 on the depth chart, that's all written in pencil. Just because he's QB1 doesn't mean Tyrod won't be on his heels.". Mooge: "Jets GM Says Justin Fields 'Is The Starter', But Tyrod Taylor 'Right On His Heels'." They are using SAME EXACT wording even. If this to you is 180 degrees apart, we need to move on. This to me is a little crazy, but I've seen worse. People believe what they want to believe no matter what. Others will decide for themselves.
This is just going around in circles here - the question I first posed to you was "How 'reasonable' is it for Faria to say 'When the New York Jets signed quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year contract during the 2025 offseason, the organization made it clear that the former first-round signal-caller would not go through a competition to earn the starting job'" Yes, my quote and all of yours from four months ago all said basically the same thing. So, even having typed in those comments above more than once you really believe Faria was correct that "the organization made it clear...(Fields) would not go through a competition to earn the starting job"? No one quoted said that. What about keeping the job? Has the depth chart now been written in bold Sharpie. or still pencil, with plenty of erasers on the table?
Nobody in an ideal world. We or I am hoping that a switch is gonna flick in his head and it will all click into place, if not, we're fucked for another year or more.
Correct, when he signed in March, both Glenn and Mooge said he was the starter with Tyrod on his heels without any competition taking place, months before training camp. Exactly as reported. Agreed there is competition to keep the job, which is always the case for anyone as these jobs don't have lifetime guarantees. We are definitely going around in circles.
Right - a guy on his heels means no competition. Okay, have it your way. But this was about Faria's report all along. Unless I missed it, at no time did anyone of authority from the Jets say there would be no competition.
Of course this thread was dragged into a dumb fucking abyss over a point no one cares about because a specific poster felt the need to argue for the last week.
Not sure what's not clear. They declared him a starter when he signed without any competition. That was before training camp and they still said he was the starter. The report is spot on. The competition is to keep the starting job, that's true for any starter. But it is a correctly reported fact that he was declared a starter when he signed without any competition before such declaration.
No. They declared him penciled in as first on the depth chart. I don't think anyone used the word "starter." Faria went overboard. As usual.
They sure did, but we already covered that part . We will have to disagree on Faria, and let others decide for themselves.
I think we need to move on. Field was brought in to be the starter and hopefully prove his worth as our long term QB. He needs to do just enough on a run heavy team to move the chains and mix it with a few passes to keep defenses honest. That is a fact. Taylor is more than capable to win us a few games, but it is not our long term answer, that is also a fact. So all been close Fields is it. But all of those facts go up in smoke if Fields really struggles after a few games. Competition or not AR is not going to keep someone playing at the detriment of the team. In the meantime, Fields will get every chance to start.
