Because I have not seen this performance I have to rely on reputable folks who were there reporting. And Sabo said he was solid overall, not just part of practice. Here is full recap by him: https://x.com/RobbySabo/status/1952455324696191371 "Story on this coming soon to Jet X: Justin Fields was *as expected* today, much better than Saturday (much, much better). Some misfires, some drops (GW had two, one of which was thrown a tad behind), and some bad luck (two great incompletions, as Breece and Lazard couldn’t remain in bounds; great throws and catches, just ran out of room). A lot of screen work, RZ and GL concept work (where there’s very little room to operate). Most importantly, Fields did the thing this staff desperately wants him to do: Throw it in safe spots when giving up on a play. There were a handful of throwaways today (that may not have looked like clear throwaways; instead, thrown towards a target but high/safe). One play saw him read a LB on Breece pre-snap, which means just one thing: 1v1 if there’s just a solo high S. Beauty of a throw, great timing, great catch over the top, but barely OOB on bobble. Another play was a beauty of a corner route towards back right pylon, Lazard grabs it, right foot barely OOB (MC2 great press-pressure-under coverage). As long as the timing is right, he’s making the correct pre-snap read, and he’s not overthinking the concept, it’s all good. The first two parts looked solid; the second part is a work in progress. There are still times he’s fighting the primary read, playing it too safe, falling back on his legs, etc. In terms of secondary reads and evaluating him as a traditional QB … I’m not even close to interested, and I don’t think the Jets are either. This is about a specific style of offense that fits this QB’s skill set. Anybody who comes into this thing believing they’re gonna turn Fields into a Montana or Unitas-type drop back passer is just lost. Anybody who believes it’s even necessary to see tremendous improvement in that area, is also missing the boat. That isn’t the deal here. They *want* him to be him. The key for Jets fans with Justin Fields is this: Never evaluate this guy on practice alone. It just doesn’t work, based on his skill set. It’s that simple. He’s a QB and RB in one position, and the RB piece of it doesn’t begin until PIT comes to town. And it’s the RB part of it that helps to exponentially lift the QB part (by way of his legs opening up great opportunity for his passing to improve). It’s been seen around the NFL for years now. That’s exactly what Glenn’s mission statement is on offense." Again, if we want him to be Burrow, it's not going to happen. But I think we can have a good QB this year, a combination of passing and running. I am hoping he will develop into Hurts like QB.
While I don't think he got good coaching here, wasn't he under Sean Payton for a year? Bo Nix looked pretty good there, I doubt coaching was an issue there.
Via Hughes: Quinnen Williams, John Simpson, Mason Taylor, Tyrod Taylor, Will McDonald, Malachi Moore among those who all not practicing. Byron Cowart rode the cart off the field. #Jets
https://x.com/connor_j_hughes/status/1952721913115013505?s=46&t=eaLIxbRmBqelegocbpHIVQ #Jets practice starts with 10 guys on the field on offense. They then get lined up, but commit a false start. So two penalties before running a play. #Jets Disaster
https://x.com/connor_j_hughes/status/1952722813791485966?s=46&t=eaLIxbRmBqelegocbpHIVQ The #Jets are doing a move the ball period, offense versus defense. Here was the Justin Fields drive - 10 men on field (reset) - False start - Breece Ball 1-yard run - Breece Hall 1-yard run - False start - Incomplete pass to Tyler Johnson (Stephens PBU on late throw) Justin Fields late on a throw. Drink.
https://x.com/connor_j_hughes/status/1952723147435753721?s=46&t=eaLIxbRmBqelegocbpHIVQ #Jets RB Breece Hall is leaving the field with a trainer. You cannot make it up
https://x.com/briancoz/status/1952728577465569292?s=46&t=eaLIxbRmBqelegocbpHIVQ Fields throws a pick to Cisco. Late throw to the sideline. Fields late on a throw. Drink.
Justin Fields last three practices for #Jets - 2 of 10 passing - 4 of 16 passing - 2 of 6 passing, INT Still time here to turn it around. don’t care if it’s practice. 8-32 over three days of camp is horrendous. That’s a bad QB and it’s what he’s been his whole career.
https://x.com/connor_j_hughes/status/1952732369334448385?s=46&t=eaLIxbRmBqelegocbpHIVQ Tony Adams just picked off Justin Fields in 7o7 drills. Very bad day for the QB #Jets Another pick, this time with no linemen coming at him.
This is unfortunately what he is unless he’s got the option to tuck it and run which I don’t think they are going to do much of in camp. We need to pray that we draw up a revolutionary running game because it’s the only way we are going to have any semblance of a passing game. Get the defense so scared of the run that you can get Garrett Wilson one on one with minimal pass rush. Even then you can’t trust the guy to hit the broadside of a barn.
Connor Hughes @Connor_J_Hughes The #Jets practice is over. Bad day for the offense. Run game was solid, but passing is not good at moment. Justin Fields finished 9 of 17 with 2 interceptions. I did not have a completion beyond five air yards. He took three sacks. Stats do not include 1 of 4 passing with an INT in 7o7 period. Fields has had a rough go of it lately. He is 15 of 43 passing (34%) with the two INTs in full-team work his last three practices. ===== Connor Hughes @Connor_J_Hughes Will McDonald has back spasms. Mason Taylor has a high ankle sprain. Tyrod Taylor has a knee injury that they are still evaluating, per #Jets HC Tyrod Taylor. We're having fun!
Wish these guys could suit up Aaron Glenn's old teammates at practice today: Kevin Mawae, 'Big Play Ray" Mickens, Wayne Chrebet, Jason Fabini, James Hasty, Victor 'The Hammer" Green
outside of just plain sheer hope, there is NO reason to believe Fields is going to improve. He is what he is…a good runner and a pretty bad QB, and it sure sounds like that’s what we are getting in camp lately. I have very little faith that he will be anything more than what he’s been for 3 years…a bottom quarter QB
Ya think? I just don't think so. Perhaps I have too much faith in Glenn. I think we'll be pleasantly surprised*
