Yah I think we both agree that Zach was/is a terrible QB…a backup at best…his biggest flaws are an inability to read the defense and see the field which leads to indecision and the tendency to hold the ball too long, coupled with a pretty inaccurate arm. That’s the book on him. I know you like Fields a whole lot more…honestly I don’t really understand why or what you see in him, but that’s fine. I think he is pretty much on par with Zach and shares many of the same flaws….he just is a bit more athletic and faster and can use his legs to make big plays better than Zach did. But coming into the league, I did not think much of Fields based on his time at Ohio State…I think he reaped the benefits of playing behind very good OLs who gave him a lot of time to throw, and he was throwing basically to NFL quality receivers. So sure, when he had lots of time either because the OL was so much better than the competition, or he made time with his mobility, then throwing to wide open receivers…he had some success there. Way too many of his highlight reel was made up of exactly that kind of play…holding the ball for 5, 6, 7 seconds and throwing to wide open receivers. But that doesn’t translate to the NFL as that happens rarely. So look, I hope you are right and I am wrong on this…I hope he develops into everything you see in him…I just don’t share that optimistic view. I think we pretty much know what he is. I also think that we haven’t really set him up for the best success either in hiring a rookie defensive HC and rookie OC…I think if we had a more experienced offensive coach…say McCarthy, Sean Payton, someone like those guys…he’d probably have a better chance, but it is what it is. Again, I don’t see what you see, but I really hope you are right and I am wrong when all is said and done!
I hear ya! I’m torn though, I love the accountability for sure but I don’t like hearing about how the offense is ass
It's not that easy to fix, or Saleh would have done it. Saleh had good defense too for the most part. This is where Glenn needs to separate himself from previous regime. He hasn't done this yet as evident from Saturday. He is trying but, that is not enough, we need to see some results. There is still time though.
Here is the latest stock up/down report: https://jetsxfactor.com/2025/08/04/ny-jets-players-stock-rising-falling-camp/ "Stock Up: Justin Fields It certainly feels like Fields has turned a corner halfway through Jets training camp. He has been far more accurate with his decisions and feels more “in command” of the offense. That doesn’t mean he’s been perfect. During Saturday’s scrimmage, Fields completed two of his 10 passes. That number had fans concerned while leaving Florham Park. Those numbers don’t tell the whole story, though. Fields improved over the last few practices and is on the right track for Week 1 as New York’s starting quarterback." Hopefully Fields continues solid camp. Interestingly AZ Thomas hasn't done great, while Arian Smith has. Thomas was the pick where I thought we could have gotten a DL - an area where we still appear pretty weak.
Honestly, having had countless Defensive head coaches that had no clue or involvement whatsoever with the offense, this is kind of refreshing.
Maybe, but more refreshing would be to fix these issues. This is where having a defensive coach again and these issues happening still are a bit of a concern.
definitely refreshing to hear they are being kept honest and held accountable. Previous head coaches you mention would downplay how poor the unit looked or try to emphasize a positive take. And I'm not sure why. These are grown men, they expect to be told they are underperforming when they are The wide receivers opposite of Garrett Wilson have been terrible by all accounts though and it is the biggest weakness in terms of talent on the roster. I hope they do something about that
To further these points, Zach Wilson had an interview after Dolphins practice recently. It was mostly fluff because he was praising his new staff but he did say something interesting, he said the dolphins staff has been telling him he is too slow getting the ball out and he's never had an NFL coaching staff tell him that. shocking that he feels that way. if true, and they kept a positive spin on his issues in processing the field here, it is no wonder he busted. he can handle some tough love, all players can
Yeah…this has been my biggest issue with hiring yet another rookie DC as HC…no one should be surprised at this talk track … we’ve been living it for years and years and Woody just never learns I like Glenn the player and I like what I’m hearing about the intangibles such as accountability, but in the end, you have to know how to mold the players into a cohesive offense, and we just don’t have anyone on staff who is a proven commodity in doing this. Not our HC. Not our OC. That’s a problem and it all sits on Woody’s shoulders.
Agree…I also think WR is the biggest weakness on the roster, but if WR is problem 1a, I think DL is problem 1b. We are extremely thin at both areas… In the WR room, we have exactly ONE starting caliber player in GW…the rest of our guys are WR3 and WR4 types. That’s a big issue. In the DL room, we have Q on the inside and McD on the outside and that’s pretty much it. I loved JJ pre-injury, but there is no telling how/when he will come back, so hard to count on him to be the same guy out there. We have very mediocre depth. These are two huge question marks on our roster…
Mason Taylor not at practice. Hopefully excused. Fields 3-10 with some overthrows. Same shit different year. Need his legs to pick up the massive slack.
According to Sabo, Fields has been solid. People who are looking for perfection in these practices are going to be disappointed. https://x.com/RobbySabo/status/1952438816981279016 https://x.com/RobbySabo/status/1952432316115980364 https://x.com/RobbySabo/status/1952427540275954007
There’s a big gap between competence and perfection. Most of us would take competence but it doesn’t look like it’s happening consistently enough. Which mirrors his career so it’s not surprising at all. https://x.com/richcimini/status/1952441925597876582?s=46&t=eaLIxbRmBqelegocbpHIVQ
Mason Taylor missed practice with an ankle injury. We’re getting bitten pretty bad. Hopefully we’re just getting it all out of the way now.
https://x.com/RobbySabo/status/1952432316115980364 "Bomb alert, Fields lays one out for Breece, vertical, beats his man, makes an unreal bobbling catch for 50+. It’s technically probably not a reception (OOB before possession), but that’s not the main point. Fields recognized the right matchup pre-snap and took advantage of it. Hat tip to the play-caller. Fields saw the LB on Breece, and based where he was lined up, that could only mean one thing." "Red zone and goal line stuff: Loving what I’m seeing from Engstrand here. A lot of stuff that makes life difficult for defensive coverages that are RZ/GL specific. Fields has been solid. There’s been a few mishaps and “late to pull the triggers.” He threw a beauty with touch to Lazard, corner of end zone, caught it but barely OOB, incomplete: MC2 with great trail coverage. He then finds Stone Smartt near back line for a TD. Smartt has had a great camp." Technically some of these are not completion, like a bomb to Hall and a TD to Lazard, but Fields made the right decisions. Which is why Sabo concluded Fields was solid. I do agree offense as a whole needs to do better. But that does not mean Fields was not competent, he was solid.
The issue is that this has always been Fields' issue, similar to Wilson. They don't make the right decision quickly enough and take a lot of bad sacks because of it. It's possible to somewhat scheme out of this if you have a wizard like Kevin O'Connell but we don't know if Engstrand is that yet, and odds are he isn't because very few people are that. Fields looking solid at some point during the practice does not supersede him going 4/16 on the day. It's just not remotely good enough. I know it's just training camp, but to expect Fields to be anything other than the type of passer he's been his entire career (a bad one) is wishful thinking.
