http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2725186 Mangini is keeping the competition at QB wide open for training camp. Herm's philosophy: better call Chad at least twice in the offseason to make sure he's still alive and wasn't killed in a car wreck or something...
This is no surprise. I think every player except for Coles, Vilma, Rhodes, Mangold, and D'Brick is going to be competing for a starting job next year. But I think Chad will easily beat out Clemens for the starting job again next year.
This is perfectly fine. It wouldn't be fair to hand Chad the job if Clemens is more fit for it. May the best QB win.
I don't know how you run an NFL team without guys having to compete for jobs each year, whoever they are. You may be the favorite but nothing is a given, nobody knows that better than Chad. If you're that great a player you shouldn't have any trouble winning your job back, right? If Chad could do it this past year he certainly could do it again.
If Clemens is a better player next year he should play. However, I'm wondering how open this is really going to be. I think what should happen is Chad goes into training camp as the starter, Clemens #2, and if Clemens proves himself to be a real challenger then the reps should be split equally. But if Mangini is planning on having an open competition like this year, and have Chad, Clemens, and whoever the 3rd QB is all getting equal reps with each team, I think that's a mistake.
I don't give a shit about Chad's work ethic or how many wins he had this season. I can't watch another season of his noodle arm taking 3 seconds for the ball to go fifteen yards, hanging his recievers out to dry or jump or come bacl to the ball when a pass that lead them would've resulted in a touchdown, or have one of the "smartest and most accurate" passers throw 17 TD's with 16 INT's. I just can't take him anymore. God I hope Clemmens works hard and takes over the starting role
Then you should watch the Texans games instead and you can see David Carr's rocket arm. I'm sure you'll enjoy their 6 wins.
Mangini is only saying this because he wants everyone to work hard but in the back of him mind, he wants Pennington to be his QB. Not only Pennington is going to compete for his job so does Coles, Vilma, Mangold... etc. The depth chart will be in alphabetical order. He will say this to have a competitive camp.
Then become a Giants fan and watch Eli throw bullets, even to receivers standing 5 yards away, and even though he has no idea where the ball is going.
Compared to the last 5 years before Mangini, I think this is pretty shocking. I am surprised. Im sure Chad said the right things but he has to be pretty miffed. Most veterans that were here under Herm are not used to this kind of treatment. Chad had ever right to expect competition this year after all the injuries and question marks. I would think he is pretty surprised to hear that he might be going through the same thing next year. Kudos to Mangini. Its a wise move even though I would be surprised to see anyone other than CP starting next year.
He could be miffed, but he has never struck me as the kinda guy that would get his panties in a bunch over something like this. I agree that competition is good, and if he's a good competitior he will welcome it. Only when we have something to push us can we truly get better. Any position on the team should be like this with open competition. Only then will veterans not rest on their laurels, and younger players actually have a goal to work towards. A starting spot should be something you win/earn rather than something you inherit.
