I think most logical, rational people understand that his year 1 is going to be a severely uphill climb.
The team has talent. Unless they get rid of all the players the team is capable of winning 10-12 wins. There new QB should raise the ceiling to considering consensus opinion is Rodgers was as bad as you can possibly get at that QB position.
28 TDs, 11 INTs, almost 4K yards, 63% from Rodgers this year... and as a JETS FAN you are telling me there's no worse option? You're not operating in the real world friend.
I'm not stating that. Hence why I wanted him to stay. But that's the consensus opinion that Rodgers was one of the of the worst so the ceiling should now be higher considering it couldn't go lower.
To me it is not obvious. In Detroit's case when you move on from prime Stafford to get future 1st round picks and trade a few other players to get capital, it was obvious. But Rodgers is not a prime Stafford. Not resigning him could be a football decision. Replacing 42 year old Rodgers is not replacing a HOF level performer, it is replacing a below average QB. Which is still not easy to do as picking are slim, but there is a path to get there, and I want to give new regime a chance to at least see what they can do. But I am not accepting another 5 win game season with or without Rodgers, the bar needs to be way higher than that. And I don't think AG is either.
No one has said he's one of the worst QBs in the league, as SOXX implied was "the consensus", it is not accurate nor is it the consensus, here or elsewhere. The contract is obviously a factor. Rodgers would make $37.5 million next year. That's only slightly less than Josh Allen, league MVP But Rodgers QBR (48.0) was similar to QBs like Kirk Cousins (50.4), Russell Wilson (51.3), Geno Smith (53.8) and Jameis Winston (55.6) each of which could be options as a veteran QB next year, for significantly less than $37.5 million. Also- those guys wouldn't blow off minicamp for trips to Egypt
I would compare this to the Chargers. The chargers realized the coaching staff was awful. They kept the pieces in place and made the playoffs in year one with the new coach. Anyone with football knowledge could figure out the coaching staff in LA was awful the same way you can easily figure out the Jets staff was even worse. The Jets can have a winning season next year if they keep the pieces in place. Reminds me of 2009 except the coaching staff in 2008 was at least competent. (Which the Jets did with a rookie QB who was very shaky)
yeah, it depends on what they do in the draft. I dont think Tyrod Taylor is their season long QB next year either. If they have a rookie they like, maybe that's not a bad thing. Something like Baker Mayfield taking over midseason for Tyrod Taylor in Cleveland If they dont like or land one of the rookies then yeah, a veteran like those guys listed on the cheap might be a good option short term. I'd probably avoid Russell Wilson because he seems distracted as much as Rodgers is. But Jameis Winston gives some Vinny Testaverde in 1998 vibes. Big arm, former no.1 overall that failed and been through the ringer with multiple teams on the cheap
I actually was going to say I would give Jameis a shot. At least it would be entertaining. Not a bad bridge QB.
I think I would like Fields. Jordan Travis seems to have a similar play style so pairing them would be intriguing. Watching Allen, Mahomes, Hurts etc pick up first downs constantly by slipping out of the pocket has me wanting a guy with wheels.
Probably not popular, but I support the jets moving on from Rodgers. I initially wanted him back. But the last 4 playoff teams alive (Commanders, Eagles, Bills, & Chiefs) ALL had QBs that often RAN for 1st downs. You NEED a QB who can run just as much as a passing QB. Rodgers can't even sneak the half-yard for a first down anyone. I know Taylor will start 2025 at QB-- I hope the jets consider a younger mobile option in the draft, trade, or Jordan Travis, if healthy before the end of 2025.
The Chargers did have some changes, the roster wasn't identical. They did keep core, but to me declining Rodgers is not a necessary a core piece to have in order to do what the Chargers did. Our core is guys like Q, Sauce, GW, Olu, etc... Rodgers is not core. Moving on from him does not mean rebuild. We need to replace him with another below average but not terrible QB, which is not easy but not impossible, and do what the Chargers did. I don't think Glenn is tanking the season by making a QB change. Hopefully he is actually looking for way to improve there, and I honestly think someone like Fields could be an improvement.
Rodgers did have high yards and TD numbers, but you have to view this in context of significant number of attempts as well. He was only 30th in actual completion %. And what's worse he was 34th in completions over expected. Meaning statistically he is not able to complete the passes that he is expected to complete at the rate of every other starter. He is often off target too - #28. https://x.com/RichCimini/status/1889024887794323921 . And a lot of the TDs were due to him checking out of runs from the short field. Now, this is not to say that it is all bad, but he is below average and will be worse this year as he turns 42. Now pickings are slim and even below average QB is not easy to get, but it is possible. A lot of people act like we let go some amazing player, not a below average guy at his position expected to get worse with age. This is not the same Rodgers from years ago. Heck it won't even be the same Rodgers from last year. At this age you have to expect regression and more frequent injuries. Yes, he can still play, but not to the level anymore where you say letting him go means we are taking a year off. If Glenn and Mooge are any good, we should find a QB who will not be a massive drop off if any at all.
Insane, this team is not capable of that many wins. No way in hell or hell no either way you want it.
What's the money situation on Rodgers look like? I saw somewhere that we save $9 mil by cutting him this early. Still a lot of dead money though. I'm glad his clown show is gone, but he was literally the best QB we've had since Pennington. It fucking sucks. Who do we replace him with? Kirk Cousins? Give me a fucking break. We cut Rodgers and take a huge cap hit to get Kirk Cousins? fuck
