You just helped me make my point. The difference is monumental. There’s no other position with nearly the impact of drafting the right, or wrong, QB. Why would we not be building up the most extensive QB scouting team the league has ever seen, given that we have not drafted a franchise caliber QB since Namath? I just don’t see how a guy who’s out evaluating DT’s, Safeties, OT’s, etc can turn around and make a truly comprehensive evaluation of a QB as well. I mean for real, JD essentially drafted Zach Wilson based on reports and a throw on his pro day. By Joe’s own admission he had to see him throw in person before making a decision. Really?? Honestly that’s the last thing I’d think you’d need after studying his film, interviewing him, speaking with teammates, developing a profile of strengths and weaknesses physically and mentally, overall football intelligence, leadership qualities, love of the game, etc…. It just makes no sense to me.
Your correct that "getting it right" at QB is monumental. The problem, and the point I was trying to make, is that there is no entity on earth that has the ability to consistently get the calls right on these guys. After all the scouting and knowledge in the world it often comes down to what basically amounts to a coin flip. 15 years ago when biotech was making occasional breakthroughs multiple times a year the stock of the companies that hit a home run would go through the roof over night and tens of million/even billions of dollars could be made very quickly. So the only problem was to figure out "which of these companies is gonna hit the next home run" You could not do it. Firms would hire ex doctors, researchers on the cutting edge, and myriads of other specialists to study the field and try to figure out where the next home run was going to come from and to make a long story short you just couldn't do it. That is kind of my theory on the QB search committee. Its a great idea but I'm afraid no matter who you put on it you'd be up against the same old crapshoot.
Eh, as little as I like Jerry, he made most of his own money and the Cowboys were his dream. I think Woody bought the Jets because he was bored and lacking in direction. The Jets are his hobby.
Maybe not when you consider Douglas being overwhelmed with Wilson's throws but not taking into consideration that he was throwing without a defense in the building. If a defense is going to be part of the game, it must be accounted for in grading quarterbacks. MLB batters do not get hired based on how well they hit off a tee.
No they don't. But I think I'll give Joe Douglas and the Jets enough credit that they didn't draft Zach Wilson soley off his pro day where he was the football equivalent of hitting off a tee. If I remember right he was borderline concensus #2 pick in the draft by the media "experts" so its not like it was totally outrageous that the Jets wanted to take him. I didn't like the Jets drafting him from a resource allocation standpoint (already had Sam on the team and the pick could have gotten him a lot of help) but I never imagined he'd end up doing anywhere near as badly as he did. If that pro day workout really was a majority reason why Douglas got excited and drafted him though I'll fully agree that is not just bad but pathetic.
If any team in the league bases draft picks on what the media thinks they should probably be banished. I didn't realize anyone was here to defend the performance of Joe Douglas and his staff at this late date.
But somehow the same teams make the same bad decisions. Browns have the pick to get Carson Wentz, trade out, then they have the pick to get Deshaun Watson, trade out. When they do pick a QB they get Johnny Manziel and then Baker Mayfield. You have the Jets example of Josh Allen. When they do pick the second QB on the board, they get Zach Wilson or Sam Darnold. Meanwhile the Patsies whiff on Mac Jones, but looks like they have found the guy. Eagles lose Wentz to injury, looks like they have found the guy. Why is it only us? Why do we continue to stink? Why?
Because those other teams have a much better structure than we do? They don't have a ego driven, meddling Owner making all the real football decisions either.
Do you know that some teams have scouting reports on the refs? They study the refs as a team and each individual ref tendencies. This is why it’s perceived that refs favor a team. The coaching is so damn good they know exactly what situations will compel one ref to throw a flag vs another. They know exactly how much they can hold, they know exactly how tight the covg can be. They study this shit extensively and draw plays for the week that take the refs into consideration. They have the best leadership and football minds around. That’s just for refs. Imagine putting this kind of effort into finding a QB. Do you honestly think anything of this level of intelligence has been going on in our organization?
