I'm curious about Aaron Glenn's involvement in the process. I just hope he's open to working with any of these three guys rather than an arranged marriage. Worst case IMO would be being hired under the assumption it would be Newmark only to have Mougey or Brown get the job later. Hoping it's a functional, thoughtful process...
Hopefully Glenn has no involvement. I think we’ve let enough former DC’s clamor for DT’s and Safeties
The NFL doesn't want any more publicity on new hires this weekend. They want the games to be the story, especially in big markets.
It's about having the GM and HC on the same page. Not independently picking two people and hoping it works out
Agreed, and basically right now the way it worked out is that Glenn is essentially picking a GM. The Jets prioritized the coach over GM, for better or worse, otherwise they could have had a GM 1st. It's not how I would have done it, but it looks like Woody just went with what he has always done: pick a defensive HC, and let him run the show (JD and Gase was Chris, Woody had little involvement). It appears they had Glenn as #2 on their list after Vrabel, and they did not even interview a single serious offensive candidate. Trying to interpret what happens, I they initially identified Newmark as someone they thought Glenn might like as they actually worked together, so why not kill two birds with one stone and have him right there? However, Glenn was not sold on Newmark and wanted to talk to two more people: one is his personal friend, Trey Brown, and the other is Mooge, who was recommended by his coaching mentor: Sean Payton. Now this also explains why Trey Brown even got that far, at least on paper. His biggest accomplishment is being Glenn's friend. Looking at the resumes, he is no where near a guy like Mooge, or even Newmark for that matter. It wasn't that long ago (just 6 years back) Trey was FIRED by Howie Roseman. If Howie Roseman fires you, I don't think it is a great look, it's just not. We are looking a top position, how is it possible that a guy whom one of the best GMs in NFL fired not that long ago is in a mix? And it's not like he had this amazing rebound since. He spent next two years in the Football Leagues, which are now out of business. He had to come back as a scout for the Bengals in 2021. He was then elevated to sr position for the last 3 years, and frankly Cincy is not really known to be a great drafting team. To have top 3-4 QB in the game with Burrow and not even make play-offs 2 of his 3 years as one of the top decision makers there? Now, again I don't know what exactly Trey has offered to Cincy, so this is only what's on paper, but Howie Roseman firing after 2018 season is a fact. Two years in defunct leagues after is also a fact. And again this was not that long ago. The only possible explanation why he is the finalist is the fact he is Glenn's friend. This will also tell me a lot about Glenn whom he selects in this process. I don't want him to pick his buddies, I want him to pick the best GM (and in the future anyone else) possible to help him. And at least on paper it is clearly Mooge out of the three.
I only know what I see on paper, just like everyone else, but at least with Mooge I see a successful young guy who kept moving up the ladder for a solid Denver organization. I do not love 8 year period where they did not make play-offs, they did have their ups and downs, but he was a part of two SB teams before the 8 year drought, and now a part of a resurgence again with making play-offs. My preference was KC or Philly assistants, just because they have grown in a similar way to Mooge but for more successful organizations (plus Halaby has analytics angle). But this is not comparable to Newmark, who knew losing for 25 years, then last 2 years success and immediately a GM. And I would pick Newmark over Brown. For me getting fired by Roseman is a massive red flag for Brown, that does not get erased by 1 year scout and 3 years in poor drafting Cincy FO, two of which they did not make play-offs with top 3-5 QB on the roster. A few more things I learned about Mooge, he did not want Hack as a HC, he wanted KOC, Minny coach. He was roommates with KOC, who was an up and coming OC from McVey. https://x.com/Playlikeajet1/status/1882820787700416883 Here is some more info: https://thejetpress.com/who-is-darr...u-must-know-about-new-ny-jets-gm-01jjb8nkdhar https://broncoswire.usatoday.com/20...-expected-to-hire-darren-mougey-from-broncos/ " Mougey, 39, joined the Broncos as a scouting intern in 2012 and he worked his way up to assistant GM. This is what Paton had to say about Mougey during a pre-draft press conference in 2022: I didn’t know Darren when I took the job, but he quickly impressed, and he shined. His attention to detail, his work ethic, his knowledge of the league and his knowledge of the pro and college [levels]. He has a great pulse of what’s going on out there. The best thing he does is he is a great manager of people, and he has a great demeanor throughout the building while dealing with the coaches, players, and agents out there. This offseason, I was pulled in a lot of different directions with the coaching search and the trade. There’s a lot of stuff that comes up. Darren picked up the slack and we didn’t miss a beat. He’s really vital to our organization, and we’re lucky to have him. He’s had a number of teams come after him the past year and he’s stayed. I can’t thank Darren enough for that. I think he’s a rising star in the NFL, and again, we’re lucky to have him. Mougey served as director of player personnel in 2021 before being promoted to assistant GM in 2022. Over the last four years, Denver’s draft classes have been highlighted by quarterback Bo Nix, pass rusher Jonah Elliss, wide receiver Marvin Mims, cornerback Riley Moss, pass rusher Nik Bonitto, cornerback Pat Surtain, guard Quinn Meinerz and pass rusher Jonathon Cooper." Also cool that Mooge played college ball as a QB and then WR. and Connection to KOC and Payton does not hurt. Again all of this is on paper, we don't really know much, but on paper it does look like behind likes of Borgonzi and Halaby, Mooge may be the next best tier. And he is young too, only 39. There may be some hope there if he is the choice. I would not hate it, even though you all know who I prefer .
Hacket was hired Jan 27th, Mougey was promoted to Asst GM Feb 3rd. Genious is spelled Genius. Anything else I can help you with?
From what I have read, no one was expecting the Lions to get their asses kicked and being bounced out of the playoffs so early. When that happened every team scrambled to bring Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn in for interviews. There was real fear in 1 Jets Drive that the Saints were gonna snatch up Glenn. Hence the reason we have a head coach and no GM.
Yes, because we haven’t dumped enough money into Quinnen Williams, let’s waste a high draft pick on another to go along with the other 2 1st rounders we just drafted for the DL. Because no one can stop the run without 4 first round picks on the DL. I’ve seen this team become a top run D time and time again. What’s it gotten us? Meanwhile we’ve had a terrible offense for 25 years. Yeah, please draft another DT. It’s one thing to have the worst ownership that continuously does the same thing over and over and fail, but to have fans supporting this like it’s a good idea is maddening. 6 times a former DC as a HC to mentor a young QB and draft DT’s over and over. Totally sensible. Clap clap, hooray Woody! B
I was wondering when you were going to bring the bold statement up today. We have seen this comment before. IMO We need upgrades on both offense and defense. A top priority to me is RT, CB, TE and WR. We don’t know if JJ will be back to form so if a stud DE and or DT falls to us in the early rounds you can’t pass on it.
No, Lions had a 1st round bye. You can interview GMs before. We could have easily had GM already in place before the Divisional round, just like the Titans did, and they started the search late as initially did not even fire their GM. We could have had say Borgonzi on Tuesday/Wednesday before divisional games and then have the GM interview the candidates in person, which could have only started Monday after. But the Jets picked a different approach, they prioritized the coach. And frankly that's what the other teams did as well: Raiders got Carrol first, who then pick a GM. Jags actually fired their GM when Coen said he was not coming with theirs in place. So, I have no issues with it. Where I do have an issue is picking a GM only because he is Glenn's buddy. I get it we want them to be on the same page, but that does not mean he can't just interview the best candidates and see if there is chemistry at that point. It does not have to be someone he already knows, especially without a great resume. We are talking GM here. Out of this group, Moogy is the only guy who actually does not know Glenn directly and who has a very good resume. Trey has the worst resume, and he is Glenn's friend. Newmark's resume is pretty underwhelming, and he worked with Glenn. Mooge does have a good resume, and they don't know each other, the connection is the recommendation from a HOF coach and Glenn's mentor. That to me is a lot better than picking a much less qualified buddy or a coworker. And btw, while I do think Mooge SHOULD be and MIGHT be the choice, it's pretty clear we can ignore this rumor completely, like it never happened. It's still a 3 horse race, and there are no leaks at all on who has been selected. Could be any one of them. Heck, they could even bring in a 4th guy. Unlikely, but possible. Not sure what takes so long, I mean Jags will probably have a GM before us and they fired theirs two days ago. I would not rule out a literal multi day long circle jerk in Woody's office that's delaying the process.
How many times do you need to be shown that even a completely inept regime can turn a defense around? We have been through countless build, teardown, rebuild cycles. Literally turned around in a season. Multiple great defenses. We continuously pour resources on that side of the ball. Let me be clear- until we have a sustainable offense that can get over 30 points when needed with a franchise QB, I am willing to suffer having the 32nd ranked D. I don’t care. Since we’re so happy hiring consultants like Tanny, what this fucking moron of an owner SHOULD be doing is finding the best and brightest QB scouts and evaluators and create a separate scouting team focused solely on the QB position. But until that QB is drafted I want the offense to be built up as a young juggernaut everywhere. I want our offense feared. We are literally the poster child for imbalance.
Maybe I didn't explain it correctly. My comment had nothing to do with the GM search that is currently ongoing. I was referencing the reason we went after Glenn with lightning quick speed.
Right but you said that was the reason why the GM wasn't hired first. I have then explained that there was plenty of time to hire the GM first even before Divisional round where Detroit lost, just like the Titans did who started very late. The Jets just prioritized the coach. Not saying it is right or wrong, other teams also did the same, but that is just what happened.
