He'd probably be fired if he wasn't a HC candidate. They would be crazy to fire him when they can get 2 third round picks for him instead.
just an incorrect statement... Glenn has interviewed with 4 teams, turned down another, and will go to a second interview with New Orleans as soon as he's done with the Jets today. to say no one else wants him is false
This just makes him an even more attractive candidate in the eyes of the Jets, an organization that prides itself on thinking its smarter than all of the other more successful franchises. And this will make 2 out of the last 3 coaching hires where we've done this.
typical Jets would be to look at one playoff game and assume the guy can't coach. typically, the Jets ignore their own alumni. Hiring Glenn is counter to both of those and IMO represents a change in how the Jets operate. --- Last offseason the players association surveyed over 1700 NFL players and Aaron Glenn was graded as the single most respected coordinator. The players association released the top 5 for each unit and its interesting that many of these coaches have since gotten HC jobs or are close to getting them. Also interesting that Ben Johnson was not cited among top offensive coordinators Tom Pelissero on X: "As the hiring cycle approaches, this is interesting: The NFL Players Association asked over 1,700 players to rate the coordinators they play for on a scale of 1-10. Here are the top five at each spot, including the No. 1 overall vote-getter: #Lions DC Aaron Glenn. https://t.co/1RuFpXXawc" / X --- so in Glenn you have a guy who is demanding but respected. Brings energy and experience as a coach and in front offices. he's also a guy who played here and wants to be here. Of course the Jets should be interested
I hope he is demanding. I have the impression he might be, but also clearly a players coach. You can be both though in theory. That would set him apart from the previous regime. A lot of parallels between him and other hires here otherwise. I see the concern with Glenn, but I'm not opposed to him either. So curious who he brings to lead the offensive staff. Will be critical.
This would be cherry picking to make an argument more valid. This doesn't change my initial point, where objectively, I am correct. Well, shoot. Are you putting Nick Foles in that FQB category? I'm not. Who would? So, it does look like in modern times, my point is valid here too.
How is your point valid? He just proved that most SB teams get elite quarterback play except for Foles. And not for anything but Foles had one of the great SB performances of all time by a QB. Similarly can point to Flacco as not elite when he won with the Ravens but he had an elite postseason.
because my point is that you can still win a SB with average to below average QB's. Specifically, I said shitty QB play. So I guess if you want to take me at my literal wording, I would be wrong, but this is what I meant. You can win with a shitty overall QB. Average - Below Average - Trash... All of those categories have won a superbowl at some point. Just because the odds are far greater with a proven elite QB, doesn't mean it can not happen. Is my point, not valid? Foles did win a SB, right?
Do Jets fans not keep up with NFL news? People have been talking about Aaron Glenn being a Head Coach for a couple years now and that he and Ben Johnson were the top candidates this year. If the Jets don’t hire him, certainly the Saints will. Not sure where this negative narrative is coming from. I’m excited for Glenn.
I agree with you. I'm in this line of thinking as well. Side note though. Does it surprise anyone that Schotty is in the top 5 of OC in the league as well with this survey? I'm actually not surprised.
Here's something to think about with Aaron Glenn and the entire concept of making a coordinator a first-time HC. Perhaps it's a reason why so many good coordinators fail as HCs. I remember reading an interview with Bill Parcells in which he explained the difference, especially as it relates to the coach's dealings with the players. A coordinator becomes buddies with his players, He tries to protect them and advocates for them with the front office. An HC, on the other hand, must be ruthless. He must be ready, willing and able to bench, trade or release guys he's fond of without a second thought. He can't favor one side of the ball over the other. Parcells said he figured this out after going 3-12-1 in his first year with the Giants and almost getting fired. In his first year, he acted like a coordinator. From his second year onward, he became a HC.
A lot of times I think they can sink or swim based on the staff around them too. McVay retained John Fassel and hired long time coordinator/former head coach Wade Phillips as soon as he got to LA. I don’t really want to see a first time offensive coordinator here if Glenn is the hire.
you can win with an average QB but its a lot harder - I have posted about this previously, if you look at teams over the last 15+ years in terms of making it to multiple playoffs - which is the real challenge here because no-one can guarantee winning a SB and upsets happen and so to have a chance you need to be in the mix - and the only team that met the criteria during that period that didn't have a top tier QB was Flacco - so yes it is possible to win with an average QB but it is really, really unlikely and having a top tier QB is by far the biggest factor at play.
How was I putting Foles in that category when I literally said "other than Foles those are all top tier QBs"? Edit- also how was it cherry picking? I just posted the winners over the last decade?
Where is Aaron Glenn being interviewed today? In NJ? In Palm Beach? Can someone send him a quality sandwich for lunch?
I agree, completely. It just feels like that is our forever hope at this point. I self admittedly have this perspective because I do hope I see a championship happen in my lifetime. Unfortunately. Chad Pennington is the closest thing I've seen as a FQB in my lifetime. As much as I loved him, he wasn't, Dan Marino. The irony there, huh... I get what you guys are saying, I just don't think they will ever figure it out at the position. Silver lining .
I know.. It was all tongue in cheek with, Foles. you are cherry picking though because you are trying to eliminate my original point but shaving off a lot of years of football, and only focusing on the last decade.
100%. The odds are forever greater with an established FQB. I'm coping though because our team can't seem to figure that position out since I've been alive. Pennington being the closest thing to it. So I gotta find hope somewhere, ya know what I mean? I just don't think they are ever going to figure that position out at this point.
