I don't know if I would call McCarthy a gift horse. He hasn't been a coach of a team with QB play anywhere close to as bad as ours. When he didn't have his QB, his offense didn't look great to me. I think NYJ fans are so anxious for a winner, they aren't looking at a retread coach of TWO different teams, who was let go by TWO different teams, who actually had quality QB play in place, STILL was let go. Without a QB, he doesn't look like a savior of any team. Long odds if you think we magically find that QB that will allow McCarthy to actually be a good HC In NY of all places. If he can't hack it in GB or DAL.. then why would I remotely think he could hack It for the NYJ? I don't.
I find it difficult to believe Woody got a woman pregnant. Yeah he's a billionaire but look at him. Or that he thought of giving the kid a cool name like Brick.
Had to be named after D'Brickashaw. The most logical explanation I can think of. So we know D'Brick is one of Woody's favorite players if not most favorite.
Whatever Woody Johnson decides is "safe" will implode within a year. Anyway, I doubt most of the people that interviewed were seriously considering the job. The Dog and Pony show is just something to make it look like anyone was interested at all.
Had to google it. Here is what I found. Woody's official name is Robert Wood Johnson IV He named his older son Robert Wood Johnson V and younger son Jack Wood Johnson. Apparently Brick is just a nickname.
I wouldn't hate Josh McCown as HC. Bit of a risk, but it sounds like he's gonna get a shot sooner or later. Not sure if he'd be a play-caller too. Might need a good pairing at OC too... Would rather him than say Arthur Smith though. Also would need a strong vet DC to pair with him. https://nypost.com/2025/01/17/sports/jets-interview-josh-mccown-for-head-coach/
Based on that I would predict Matt Nagy (HC experience) or Aaron Glenn (DC as usual for this team, popular candidate). Flores I would put in the riskier category given how his time with MIA and the lawsuits in the years following. Not the candidate a risk-averse person goes with. IMO McCarthy would be a "safe" choice but they don't have interest in him so idk what the hell Woody wants.
He wants someone that will be popular with the fans and get them engaged enough to come back and renew their season tickets. Aside from Vrabel, Aaron Glenn is the guy who Woody most likely thinks can do that in this subpar coaching cycle because he's a popular former Jet who played here during some good times for the organization.
For me, it has to Kingsbury or Brady, others are not even close (it appears Ben Johnson, Monken, McCarthy, and Coen are not realistic at this point). You might have to wait for these guy as they are still in it, and may not even be done next week (though I really hope Brady is as I do not want to see the Bills go to SB). But herein lies the point though, these teams are successful and still playing because of their offense. Admittedly they do have great QBs, but if you look, Josh Allen was not a superman yesterday, only 127 yards. Still they put up 27 against a good D. And Jayden Daniels as good as he is, is still a rookie. So, yeah, the risk is there, but still these are the best candidates whom we have a chance at . You wait for these two, don't settle for Glenn or Flores and do the same thing again and again and again and again to get the same result.
None of these guys excite me but Matt Nagy was able to win 12 games with Mitch Trubisky and even helped him win the Nickelodeon Slime Bowl MVP in a playoff loss to the Saints. I feel like Nagy or McCown are the two leaders in the club house at the moment but there isn't anyone out there I feel like who can turn this team into a winner. Nagy has the best pedigree of the people we've interviewed. Flores the second most experience.
No HC, no HC at all, can develop a winning team without a good QB. Particularly not a first time HC, where the non Xs and Os part of the job are huge and consumes most of your day.
