Because the former GM and his organization have a better idea than the Jets owners and their organization about what is going on in the league and who the movers and shakers are today as well as the "fast track" prospects. Are you suggesting the team owner does it himself as he has for most of the time he has owned the franchise - how's that working out?
At least we’d have a guy in place without these consultants giving every single friend a courtesy interview** ** except top candidates like Ben Johnson, Mike McCarthy and Todd Monken**
This is football gospel truth. We have hard evidence to prove what happens when Woody or Chris make decisions without help. I think however, they should be close to make a decision about the GM.
I think they should be close as well. It's amazing how many here have decided in their own minds exactly what is going on in Florham Park based on what is conjured up only in their own minds.
It sounds like you're suggesting hiring the candidates who can get here fastest just to have guys in place.
I don't agree that Woody has done it himself for much of his ownership. If I remember correctly Bradway-GM was suggested to him by Parcells before he left? Tannenbaum was a holdover from the Parcells regime. That was pretty much the Jets braintrust until 2011 or 2012 when Tannenbaum was let go as GM. Then it was Korn & Ferry or whatever the firm's name is sugested Idzik-GM to Woody. MacCagnan was hired on the suggestion of the Casserly group. That's much of Woody's Jets ownership right there. The Jets have no set vision or identity in place because the owner has no idea. He has other people do the thinking for him. I have to question the logic of hiring our former GM and other ex-GM to run this search. He's doing that might as well rehire Tannenbaum to be the GM? At least he's a known around these parts. He can't be that old.
I was in favor of this since it's better than Woody doing it himself. However, If we do not have a GM in place in the next day or so before we talk to HC candidates from the best teams in person, we all have to start questioning it. It simply does not make any sense to have this much time and not have GM in place by the time serious in person HC conversations start taking place. All while spending time interviewing Kotite level candidates to gather data. And I am all for gathering data, but it is way more important to have GM in place to participate in the key interviews, so it cannot come at that expense. Not to mention lose a good one to someone else, which may have already happened if they thought highly of Borgonzi. The bottom line is, if Halaby is announced shortly, I think the process really worked. But if we take more time, key HC candidates are interviewed in person without a GM, this would be simply utter incompetence, no other way to say this.
https://x.com/BoyGreen25/status/1881007688844197974 Paul Andrew Esden Jr @BoyGreen25 ESPN’s Rich Cimini said it’s difficult to gauge who the #Jets GM finalists are going to be but there has been a lot of buzz about these 3 names: Mike Greenberg, assistant #Bucs GM Jon-Eric Sullivan, #Packers VP of Player Personnel Alec Halaby, assistant #Eagles GM Cimini said we’ll find out exactly who the finalists are somewhere in the next 24 hours.
Woody wants to hire Mike Greenberg because he has the same name as famous Jets fan ESPN douche Mike Greenberg.
This is not a bad list, all 3 are qualified. Though I would take Borgonzi over Sullivan, who is a traditional candidate from scouting background, was with successful organization for a long time and now looks ready to do it on his own. Greeny and Halaby are non traditional candidates without scouting background, and Halaby wins hands down IMO, being the apprentice of the best GM in football. TB has turned their fortunes around, but I think Philly is still a far superior organization and I would prefer someone who came up from there with Roseman. When it comes to Halaby vs JES. you all know how I feel. But JES would not be a terrible hire either. Still I would much prefer Halaby, and if JES is the one, it feels like we fucked up there losing Borgonzi, who has a similar profile, but more success. Overall though, I don't understand why there needs to be a list of "finalists". I mean you already had these 3 guys in person. The top one should already be signed. As @Cman69 said, paralysis by analysis. Get the deal done already and put the GM in the interview room with the coaches on Monday!
Thanks Borat. I know nothing about any of these guys but hope it is either Halaby or JES. I think we will find out about the GM in a day or two.
I also want nothing to do with anything come out of Green Bay. For whatever reason the organization runs differently than 30/32 franchises other than maybe the Steelers. I can’t see someone leaving that organization and replicating that sort of success since it’s so unbelievably unique how they do things. They’ve also had a franchise quarterback for what will be like 45 straight years when Love’s career is done. That’s absurd.
That all sounds like a well run ship to me. We are the antithesis of that. May be he can set a new standard, but going from reporting to the shareholders to the Johnsons is a different world.
