That hush hush rumor was interesting. What if the Flores and McCown interviews were just to secretly learn more about their boss and they are putting together a move at McConnell? alleycat is probably right, woody is too cheap for a ballsy move like that but I’m gonna dream about it
Shefty reported McCown is staying in Minny if cannot get HC job. https://www.boston.com/sports/new-e...-offensive-coordinator-josh-mccown-drake-maye If true, he is not coming with Flores or anyone else. Only if we pick him as a HC. Which given the options he is #2 on my list after Brady. In other news looks like Kingsbury didn't interview with anyone since he will only do face to face once Washington loses. Meaning he may still be in play, which is great, as he probably moves at the top of the list or #2.
That's probably the best way to sum it up. The NFL isn't trying to push for the best candidates, its trying to push for minority head coaches as outlined by the intent of the rule itself directly from the NFL. The NFL should push for the best person to get the job, not push for more minority coaches. The NFL would be a better product without the Rooney Rule. People want to see there teams win and want the best coach. Instead the NFL forces what it wants and fans have seen a weaker product as a result.
And from a fans perspective I can guarantee you 99.9% of fans do not care what color their head coach is if they win the team a title.
Nobody is forced to hire anyone. The rule is about interviews I think it could be outdated too and I feel for the guys put through BS interviews. But let’s be clear about what it is, it’s not a mandate to hire anyone
Agree on the HC interviews. But part of the rule is if you hire an assistant GM/senior FO guy or a coordinator who is a minority, and that person ends up getting hired for a GM or HC, you get 3d round picks. This is nothing to sneeze at. You also must have at least minority assistant coach on offense. Which means if the candidates for these positions are even remotely close, it makes sense to go with a minority candidate plus you gotta get at least one on offense. This is good or bad depending on your perspective, but this does make a difference.
no that is incorrect. The candidates former team gets the draft picks, you don’t get them with the hire
You are confused. 33Team is not supposed to make decisions on who to hire; that's Johnson's job. When is it meddling for a guy who owns a company to hire people to run the company? If you have identified 1000 candidates perhaps you should contact the Jets to sell them your services.
Guys. Can we drop the Rooney rule discussion please. Good or bad rules are rules and Jets satisfied the Rooney rule already. If you guys want, we can start a new thread in the NFL forum to discuss Rooney rule. People come to this thread to read for updates on the coaching search.
Reuniting Mike McCarthy with Aaron Rodgers makes too much sense. I'm not crazy about McCarthy but this list of candidates he has to be at or near the top? His history with Aaron Rodgers can't be overlooked? If not McCarthy I'm leaning towards Arthur Smith he'd be a meh hire. IMO Aaron Glenn would be a meh hire as well he doesn't excite me at all he's riding the Lions recent wave of success I don't care he played for the Jets. Arthur Snith worked for the Steelers this past season always a plus in my book and he did a excellent job with Russell Wilson another older QB in 2024 that's another plus. Also I'd give Mayo a look I wouldn't be upset with him to me it seems Kraft did him dirty.
They might as well. Wouldn't be the worst candidate they've interviewed so far. Also would probably finish in the top half of this abysmal list of potential "head coaches".
