I'm happy about getting Soto, but a 15 year contract in any sport is absurd. So this guy is going to be making 50m a year until he's 41. This is a deal that's going to be great for the first half of it but eventually they are going to be paying the piper when he's 35, declining, and still has 6 more years on the deal. Don't get me wrong, this is great for the Mets and their short term future, but I can easily see this becoming another Bobby Bonilla contract. Hopefully Pete will take a hometown discount and the Mets can sure up their pitching. But then again, if the Mets win a title, I don't really care about long term contract implications. Win a title and the deal is worth it. Win more than 1 and it's all gravy. I can ride that high for a while since it's been so long.
Yankees do both themselves and the Mets a favor, signing Max Fried away from the Braves. Personally, I would have been much more impressed if the Mets had signed Snell and Fried than I am with them signing Soto. I still think that the Dodgers are the best team in baseball, and signing Clay Holmes certainly doesn't ease my fears about the starting rotation.
Mets might be looking to trade Marte. https://www.si.com/mlb/mets/news/sources-mets-open-to-trading-starling-marte-for-relief-pitching
I like Marte alot... He's kinda the "straw that stirs the drink" imo. Seems like a great clubhouse guy too, I hope they keep him.
Agreed, that makes sense. Marte is getting up there in age and he gets hurt a lot. Makes sense to replace him with a younger guy.
There were four free agent first basemen with WARs over 4 (in fact, over 2.5), and three have signed (Walker for three years with the Astros, Santana for one year with the Guardians, and Goldschmidt for one year with the Yankees). Only you-know-who is left, and it sounds like teams aren't buying what Boras is selling about him. Is a return of the Polar Bear to Queens imminent? Four years for $100 million, say?
The thing about Vladimir Guerrero that would scare me is his weight issues. I wouldn't trade for him without an extension, but um If he has these weight inconsistency at this age hard to think things will get better as he ages. This one is tricky!
Andy Martino @martinonyc The Mets have pivoted to plan B, post-Alonso. They now consider it the most likely outcome that Alonso will sign elsewhere. They add Winker and will add a reliever, possibly a top one. I hope they have something other than Winker( bench player) because right now this team isn't good enough. Can't take 30+ HR guy out of your lineup if you aren't gonna replace it with someone equal or greater.
Well, they did that with Soto. It's pretty obvious that the Mets think it's likely that Pete is at best on his way down, and at worst about to fall off the cliff, and it's hard to argue with that. I once thought a four-year $100 million deal was the best he could do, but now it looks like he can't even get a three-year $75 million one. The fact that Toronto is the only other team even being mentioned is bad news for him, but his ego might not allow him to take a low offer from the Mets, even if Toronto doesn't do any better than match it. That would be too bad, but I can certainly understand it. The story isn't clear about whether the Mets want only a team opt-out after one year, or it would be an opt-out on either side; if it's the latter, that might be the best Pete can do at this point. Anyway, the team has certainly done little to suggest that they're in a position to contend with the big boys, but of course all that really matters nowadays to getting into the postseason.
Supposed to add while not subtracting though. lol I'm not emotionally attached to Pete it's just this team lineup +pitching seems a bit concerning to me.
ehhh... I think it sucks to lose big Pete.... besides, its not enough that this franchise already has enough bad luck, now the spite of the Great Pumpkin too?!
I think it would be great to keep Pete, but the combination of his age and performance profile the last couple of years with the general career profile of players like him is more than a little concerning. At least so far it doesn't seem that Stevie is going to get sentimental about him, so I guess it really comes down to whether there is a genuine offer out there for him.
Reportedly Billy Eppler offered a 7-year $158 million contract in 2023. In hindsight, a bad decision for Pete to turn it down, but that's life. Supposedly they're now offering 3 years at $90 million with opt outs for both sides; I think he's either a complete idiot for turning it down, or some other team will be complete idiots for offering more than that.
