Accountability? As in sue the NFL because you rightfully didn’t get a job? That kinda accountability? A good coaching mind has losing records, never made the playoffs, created conflicts with players and coaches? But hey he runs a decent defense, amirite? Brian Flores is an emotional disaster.
Saleh is not an excellent Defensive coach. He runs a basic shell D that requires studs at multiple positions. A monkey could run his D (his words, not mine). Saleh is a terrible leader and a total fugaze.
It’s hard to lead when your legs are cut off at the knees. Don’t get me wrong he had a ton of flaws but I do believe he is one of the best defensive coaches. If his scheme is so easy to execute why would SF want him back and not have that surfer dude still running it? I think the monkey comment was to just build up his defensive players
I like the categorization…my thoughts: Category 1 - Solid hires Johnson, Spagnolo, Kingsbury - yeah agree I’d be happy with any of these guys but Johnson already told Woody to fuck off Glenn - not sure I’d include him in this categor…another first time DC hire is not someone we should be banging down the door to hire in my view…we’ve ignored offense for decades and I’d hate to see that continue…I see him more as a category 2 guy McCarthy/Pedersen - I’d probably add these guys to the first category…both are offensive coaches, proven Super Bowl winners, both accomplished more than any coach we’ve had since Parcells and I’d be happy to get either guy in the house Category 2 - Meh…maybe works, maybe not Personally I’d put Glenn in this category…yet another gamble on a first time defensive guy doesn’t excite me much, but Glenn has some good qualities…it’s a bigger risk though that he can fix the offense Rex is borderline category 2 or 3…he has had the most success of our coaches since Parcells and he does seem to love this team and want to be here, but I’d probably search elsewhere Rivera I’d move to category 3…he is very mediocre…and while “mediocre” is still better than the shitstorm we’ve had at HC, I just don’t think he can fix any of our problems… Category 3 - Fuggetaboutit Agree with Flores and Smith…as I said above Rivera is in this category for me…I want no freaking part of any of these guys The fact that we haven’t talked with some of the hot OC candidates like Monken or Roman or Coen is crazy to me…and they should be on the list for sure. I know Joe Brady is on our interview list and he’s a category 1/2 tweener I think… Sad to say, it’s not a great list…the one proven guy who has done it every single place he’s been in both college and pros was Harbaugh…that was the move to make…or Sean Payton the year before…but Woody was too stupid to figure out the obvious move so here we are
You sound like an emotional disaster when it comes to Flores. Holy yikes. We get it. You don't like the guy. He's a good coach and exactly what this team needs. His results in Miami on the field speak for themself. Back to back winning seasons after that team was putrid for years.
I could see it too. Saleh didn't get a fair shake here. I could see him having some success elsewhere a la Todd Bowles. Jacksonville has a cake division too
I suspect Saleh is getting interviews because of the Rooney rule and he can interview in person right away plus as info gathering, plus consider for DC for another HC. He is an intelligent person, has been around the League, and is good to probe for info, so I see value in talking to him. I do not see him ending up with another HC job though any time soon. I hope I am wrong as it would be fascinating to see how he does with another organization, but I doubt he will get a real shot this cycle.
I think Glenn is the favorite now because they haven't really interviewed any good candidates yet, he may be the only one. A lot of shit to mediocre candidates and Glenn so far. So as of right now, he is a front runner. And it may very well stay that way, but this week there will be a couple of good ones, like Brady for examples. Would be interesting to see what the buzz will be then.
I want the best overall head coach - a leader and culture-setter above anything else. That said, it seems like they are heavily favoring defensive guys. I keep seeing more DC names pop up. Has to be more offensive-minded potential HCs out there. I still like Aaron Glenn. And I'm open to Flores on some level but all that went down in Miami and with the lawsuits is hard to shake. People can grow and change and maybe the lawsuits indeed had merit, but it would worry me. And I want no part of Ryan Grigson
We have to be fair here. We didn't make play-offs for 14 years. I don't give a shit about a winning season without play-offs. We NEED to make play-offs. And even in his 10-6 season he lost to key games to AFC teams, failing when it matters, causing him a play-off tie breaker. And as far as Miami and results, they had a coach before him for 3 years and a coach after him for 3 years. Gase before him did better than him in 3 years with worse QB, making play-offs once. McDaniel was a coach after him and did better than him by making play-offs twice. What results? He did worse than the the coach before and after in the same time span as they did! And this is on top of numerous red flags. Didn't get along with staff, including multiple QBs, who still shit on him. Didn't get along with players. Didn't get along with owner. Didn't get along with League. Didn't get along with other teams that interviewed him. Didn't get along with his mentor. Awful assembling offensive staff, cycled through many failed OCs and fired Ben Johnson. Burnt all the bridges and connections. Still as a DC I would hire him in a heartbeat. I think he can build a solid defense. But a HC? No, no, and hell no!
this is so funny-wrong. Flores "fails where it matters" and "loses key games to AFC teams" in Miami McDaniel has way better players with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, etc. But he also fails where it matters and loses key games to AFC teams. And yet hes a good coach and to start your comment with "we have to be fair" LOL
Funny? Even Gase made play-offs there in the same 3 years. Did Flores make play-offs? You want next 3 years with two winning seasons and no play-offs? What matters to you? To me play-offs matter. Flores failed and the other two guys, before and after, one of whom came here and sucked, did better in Miami. You main not like it, but it is fair, these are actual results, and Flores didn't deliver the goods. At least not the kind of good we need.
The Flores talk is funny because everyone was on his jock and whining about how Miami got a good coach when the Jets could not. Now, all of a sudden he's a bad coach? I get that the racism thing was a bad look, but that has nothing to do with his coaching ability.
Jags see what happened to Quincy (who they cut) when he came to the JETS.... (I loved reminding my friends who are JAGS fans this) Also, seeing the JETS get WORSE across the board after Saleh was canned isn't hurting his cause, although I think he needs another DC role again...
If you want to be fair, then actually be fair. You just said it yourself. He went 10-6. The Jets would give their left nut for a guy who builds a 10-6 team. Gase was a disaster. No one in their right mind would ever say Adam Gase was better than anyone. Gase couldn't coach to save his life. Flores has proven his coaching ability. You're getting too caught up in all of the off the field stuff. Everyone deserves a second chance especially a guy who has proven talent like Flores.
Flores = proven coaching ability and proven he can build a winning team. Some scarred and battered Jets fans = look at all his off the field, gossip, bs instead of his actual coaching ability. Sad. Get out of your own heads and realize what coaching talent looks like. Flores is a legit HC candidate. No one can deny that he has talent as a HC and his short track record in Miami proves that. Facts.
The concern I have now with Spielman and Tanny is why we do not have any of Johnson, Coen, Monken, Kingsbury interview. I get it that someone like Johnson may just not be interested, and there is nothing we can do. But I do not accept that ALL of them are not interested. Big part of the reason I was excited about Tanny and Spielman is for their connections. So, why can't they use their connections to bring in good candidates? Like the way Tom Brady brought in Ben Johnson to talk to Raiders. And again, I don't expect ALL, but I also think that some of them should be interviewed. So far HC list looks weak. Now, I do think GM list is good, so clearly they have connections there, so my hope is that after hiring a GM we may unlock more candidates, but we need to move on that pretty quickly I feel. So far HC list is very concerning.
Let's be fair then. You would give your left nut to have two winning seasons in next 3 years and therefore have our play-off streak at 17 games? Really? Because that is the actual results he got. That is fair. I am not giving a tip of a fingernail for this, not to mention my nut. I want play-offs. And these red flags are real, not because I don't want to give a second chance, but because it will hinder his ability to get better results. I have no confidence he can assemble and maintain staff, especially offensive, get along with GM, with QBs. To me this is an obvious no. But if you would give your nut not to make play-offs with a winning season, I can understand why you are excited by this, and that's fair too I just strongly disagree.
That type of thing can backfire on you quick smart. It's a fine line between discipline/accountability/standards and creating a toxic culture where the players despise you, check out mentally and ultimately request trades. You need to create a strong culture based on respect, not by ranting, raving and deriding your players. I don't know why we still haven't looked at Carroll, yeah he's old but I think he could help establish a strong culture to build off. This is going to be a multi-year project and Carroll may not be there to see it through but he could be there for 3 years or so to pay the foundations.
