Yeah I noticed that too…he just holds the ball too long…don’t know why they weren’t running shorter routes or just putting the RB out in the flat as an escape valve more often, so that’s on the playcalling, but yes, he does not have a Marino-like lightning release
Yeah I think you hit it there too. He looked bad but the playcalling didn’t do him many favors. They should’ve came out and ran a bunch of short stops and what not like the Rams did to loosen the defense up and get Sam comfortable. Unfortunately, what they did yesterday is how they’ve won all year - hit big plays. Playoffs are a different animal especially after Detroit exposed the flaw a week earlier.
This is an interesting chart intersecting time to throw with average separation. It kinds of shows which QBs are in the most ideal situations.
Nahhh the avg time to sack was over 4 seconds last night, and there were plenty of open receivers that Sam just missed. The problem is Sam doesn’t handle the big pressure games very well.
Probably the biggest reason to take a risk on Sam would be age. Still younger than some QB's who were drafted 3 years ago.
Wow, great chart. Does this mean that the Jets receivers were significantly better at getting separation than the Bills receivers? Maybe Josh Allen is an incredibly accurate passer. I wonder how much QB decision making is included here. Do the Ravens receivers have great separation because they are awesome or because Lamar makes the right decision and doesn't throw to near-covered guys? I think the issue was a lot of the WRs were running deep routes all night and Sam didn't have time for the play to develop. This falls on Sam and the OC. They should have done shorter plays instead of trying to hit the large plays which they never did all night. Sam stock has completely crashed. Interesting scenario now. I think a team bites or maybe he goes back to Minnesota on a one year deal. I just can't see them investing the long term into him when they have JJ McCarthy.
He averaged over 4 seconds per dropback and those routes were getting open. He just folded under the pressure. He has a history of that.
The chart doesn’t provide for nuance but one thing you can take away is that Lamar and Hurts got it real good. No wonder both teams are Super Bowl favorites.
I'm struggling to think of any clutch performances Sam had while here. No amazing 2 minute drills, no amazing comebacks. Sanchez had like 5 or 6 in his career as a Jet and was also very solid in most Playoff appearances.
You can visibly see it, his eyes are wide, he’s breathing heavier mouth open, his throws are off target and he’s pressing. He’s a prototypical example of anxiety overtaking his ability.
We might want to give another chance to Justin Fields. His WRs got the worst separation. And the OL was not that great either, rated #27 by PFF. High time to throw is largely because he can run and extend plays when it breaks down not because his poor OL allowed him so much time. Still managed to lead them to 4-2 record and respectable 93 passer rating and 51 QBR. Still just 25 a year older than Jordan Travis. I just feel we haven't seen the best of him yet and he might be the best QB option this offseason.
On a cheap incentive based deal I’d definitely consider Fields. Travis was a wasted pick, shame on JD for that one. A new regime is not going to give a 6th round QB the time of day.
When drafting players I doubt GMs think about what the team's plans are for the player once they're fired
And JD was clearly on a 1 year make or break season. He was in a “do or die” scenario on a one year basis where “die” was a very real outcome. He’s pretty much all but trashed the kid’s career by selecting him. Teams with comfortable situations do well to take a flyer on a player they can stash for the year. With a new regime Travis is not getting the time of day in reps in practice or live games. They just don’t have the time or inclination to work on a project they didn’t start. At best he’ll be on our practice squad.
