He wants a lot of money and woody is not willing to pay it, which is why we are interviewing high school coaches like Brian Griese and Josh McClown
Kraft is known to be even more cheap, yet he wants to go there, plus Woody is not known to be cheap. I think it comes down to the good young QB. He only interviews with teams that have one: Maye, TL, Caleb. Jets have nothing there, and no prospect in this draft given #7. I do see if Ben gets rejected by NE, Chicago, and Jax, he might change his mind, but very unlikely.
Before I retired I never tried to hire anyone who didn't want to work for me. That means I never demanded they take an interview. There was never any turmoil in making those decisions beyond making sure the party knew I was interested. Pretty sure Ben Johnson knows the Jets have an opening. End of story.
The cons outweigh the pros with Rex. Yes, he's a good defensive mind, but the modern game has passed him by. Yes, he's a good motivator and players love him, but the team needs discipline and accountability right now. Also Rex specializes in 3-4 and this defense is built for 4-3. Would he really be able to have quick success here? I doubt he'd even last 1.5 years.
I question whether we’re built for 4-3. Mosely is older and slow and we’re stuck with him for one more year I’m pretty sure. A 3-4 requires him to cover less ground. Will McDonald is a prototypical 3-4 OLB and Quincy Williams would thrive with his speed on the outside. Say what you will to detract from Rex, but you and I know damn well this D with the current roster would go beast mode with Rex coaching it. It’d be a night and day turnaround from the shitshow we had this year
you are what your record says you are: rex got to 2 AFC championship games, and won 4 road playoff games with sanchez as the QB. WHO ELSE HAS THAT RECORD SINCE BB RESIGNED AS THE HC OF THE NYJ?
I’d be shocked if Mosley doesn’t retire. I never really read any injury update on him all year which felt pretty weird. But yeah no disagreement here. Wouldn’t hate a 3-4 with this roster considering we probably cut Q after 2025. I really dislike hardline coaches that stick to one of the other though. I like a multiple front.
neck injury for Mosley I kinda hope he retires for his sake the 3-4 defense in the NFL is obsolete IMO. Almost nobody does that anymore, most teams line up in a 4-2-5 nickel D
I think the traditional 3-4 sort of is when thinking about the Steelers and Pats of the 2000’s. But the 5-man front isn’t or what’s more like a 4-3 under. My problem with pigeon holing a scheme is that you need to be multiple. A 5-man front isn’t what you need to stop the Eagles or Ravens rushing attack. No reason to use that against like the Texans or some other teams though. We just watched too many years of Saleh and Ulbrich playing the same defense no matter what team we played.
None of the candidates inspire me, but one entertains me. I think we have 2-3 years of inevitably unentertaining football ahead of us. Whoever we hire will be fired in 3 years, maybe by then we’ll find our franchise WB and be the darlings of the NFL. If not, rinse, wash, repeat. You know it, I know it, we all know it. So why not be entertained by a big mouth who has a track record of pulling some shit out of his ass now and again.
I have to say though when you look at the defense he fielded, he didn't have all pros all over that defense like he did in Baltimore. David Harris and Revis were the bell cows of the D and then you had safeties that couldn't cover well, pass rushers that weren't all that good at getting to the QB and mostly role players everywhere else. That smoke and mirrors defense was really impressive for that.
I just can't. He's a blowhard who can't back it up. I am also underwhelmed with the candidates, but I'm hoping we get lucky this time around.
