I'm no expert but it sure looks like it's much more beneficial to cut Rodgers after June 1, same with Adams and Mosley. I half expect CJ to retire at the end of the season though.
The cap is going to need some work the next few seasons. Adams is the most obvious cut. We're not going to pay him 38 million next year and cutting him would save us about 30 million. This is why the Raiders traded him. That's a good saving though. Mosley's long, massively restructured contract, is finally getting thin. If we cut him after June 1st we'd save about 8.5 million, which does push 3.6 into 2026. If he wants to keep playing cutting him late might be a sore spot with him but that's the breaks. So that's about 38 million between Mosley and Adams. The problem is Rodgers. Rodgers is going to cost us 49 million no matter what. The question is do we want to try and push 28 million of it into 2026? Next year is a throw away year so I'd say just take his hit and get it over with. As it stands right now that would leave us with about 40ish million for next year. If the cap is raised we'll get more. But we will have to sign, or resign, about 15 players next year and 40 million ain't near enough. If we hit on a some low round draft picks that could make up a lot. If wee keep pushing Rodgers salary we could go into next year with about 65'ish million. But that makes about 30 million dead cap (Mosley/Rodgers) in 2026 when we want to really be building. Also, if Rodgers would make himself available to trade, that might be a decent workaround that could save us 10-20 million depending on the deal we work out. We are going to have to accept that we wont have a lot of premium talent next year. But we had a lot this year and look what happened. We're the Jets.
Adams’s contract is awful and I’m sure he’ll bitch his way out of town, but it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to have him and GW on the roster as the two starting wideouts if you could fix the money. As long as he’s not a whiney bitch but I also don’t think that’s possible.
If we’re saving $38 million on Adams and Mosley wouldn’t that give us around $70 million since the OTC number projects $32 million before that?
I know 38 million or whatever is ridiculous and I know he joined on as the boat was already sinking and it hasn't been pretty as it finished going under but if there was any way to renegotiate things out a little more reasonably I'd love for the Jets to be able to keep Davante Adams. Him and Garret Wilson are a pretty awesome duo and I feel like with a fresh season and a fresh start somebody could really make some hay with those two guys.
In short Joe douglas put us in salary cap hell. We got a $50 mil cap hit for a washed up qb who will turn 42 next year and still has Diva status.
Yes, but Rodgers is the problem at 49 million. 23 million is already being accounted for, and when you factor the smaller numbers from the 3 contracts, it drops us down to about 42 million. Or we cold push 28 million into 2026 and get closer to 70. But do we want to go that all in for next year? IMO its clean up time, not keep pushing money into the future time. Each time the cap is raised players get more expensive.
I would agree. Eat it now. It’s not a very good FA class from our needs perspective either from what I’ve skimmed through.
If we are serious about rebuilding, next year is going to have to be a thin year. Like the Josh McCown year. Then we can really stretch out.
Yeah just cut rodgers and take the wash next year instead of spreading it out since we aint going anywhere next year either, hopefully we suck enough next year to get a number 1 pick and restore our cap space in 2026. But than again thinking is overrated and Woody will do the opposite to sell the idiot Jet fans hope next year.
T This is why he's in a league of his own in terms of GM malfeasance (OK, not actually malfeasance because it's not illegal to be stupid). Any shitty GM can put together a perennial loser, but to put together an overpriced/ back-end-contract-weighted roster that will also screw you in future years as well? Legendary.
Every GM does this as their seat gets hotter though. They become more worried about not getting fired than doing what's best for the team long term. The real blame is on Woody for not realizing this and firing JD sooner even though many of our recent GMs have done it. Mac did the exact same thing near the end of his tenure.
I have no idea what would happen with DA, but I can’t imagine any team paying him $38M Whether he renegotiates to stay here (doubtful unless AR is here too), or we cut him and he signs somewhere else, I’m guessing it’ll be a lot less than $38M
Why would Adams want to stay around for a rebuild? With him getting up there in years, I would think he would want to go to a contender. I would think the Jets would have to massively overpay.
We knew this going into the season. Last two years has been all in, there has been plenty of talk on this board about no draft picks and salary cap hell for the next few years. They threw all their chips in the middle of the table with a 2/7 off suit, not surprisingly, lost, and now the rest of the decade is pretty much shot.
