I heard Brock Bowers is sooo good he could play for the Raiders and still coach a different team!!! Make it happen Woody
Tanny was the best GM we have had since Parcells left and Groh was a good coach. Some of the veteran players became whiners about the tough practices but that team was winning games.
I think it comes down to 5 Candidates. 1. Ben Johnson. This has to be the number one target. He was part of turning the lowly lions into a contender. Saw how it was done and has the experience from that to bring to the jets combined with an excellent offensive scheme. Give him whatever power he needs and to bring in his GM instead of the other way around. 2. Deon Sanders. If woody wants to be bold and really go for a coach who can turn a locker room around he’ll give Deon the keys and let him run loose. Deon is swagger and is a type of coach you need to reemerge and not fall into the same SOJ rut. He will bring swagger, passion and excellence football iq to the table. 3. Mike Vrabel. Although me personally I’m not a huge Vrabel fan but I think he will be high on their list. 4. Jon Gruden. This hire would reek of the NFL giving him a chance again so he drops the law suit. Woody and Gruden also are buddies and I could see this as a fall back safe hire. 5. Rex Ryan. It would not shock me if woody went back to Rex if he can’t get his top 4
There will definitely be people that don't want the person that gets hired, but it's my experience that there is a logic-free run of hope on this forum and with Jets fans in general. Even when Adam Gase was tripping balls at his opening presser, people were still ready to give him a chance. Somehow that chance is squandered almost immediately, no matter who is hired, with extremely rare exception.
funny you mention gase, it feels like that nerd coach of the dolphins gets a lot of love but his record as HC is 25-21. Gase's was 23-23 in the same amount of games. So McDaniel is 2 games better than Gase, with far more talented players, and you'd never know it cause he's portrayed as a genius
No. He did support Groh as a last minute replacement who had served with him for years when Belichick backed out of his deal but that's quite different than consulting as an outsider. He was gone from the Jets 13 years before Idzik was hired and had no input in that selection.
Ben Johnson and Mike Vrabel are the only two good ones, and they're not touching the Jets with a 10 foot long pole. Sanders, Gruden, and Ryan would be disasters.
If those were actually the top 5 choices, the Jets might as well just not field a team for the next 3-4 years and try again. It would actually be more productive than letting the three on that list who would actually take the job send this franchise further into the abyss. Neither Johnson or Vrabel are going to take this job. I wouldn't be surprised if they both refused interviews with the Jets.
Sounds like Belly Check is blowing smoke up Aaron’s ass in a NYP article. Might be a play for a coaching job?
I think Johnson should be at the top of the list but honestly I just don’t think he’d come here. So far, we already know that the Bears and Saints jobs are open in addition to ours. The Bears have legit QB option on a rookie deal, always a selling point. The Saints have a decent QB option in Carr. Both of those options seem better than coming to this team with either a 41 year old QB or a need to draft a rookie when we likely won’t have the first pick and it appears to be a weaker overall college QB class. Factor in the media and expectations and just absolute shit culture, and this would be option #3 behind those two. Then factor in that a few more coaches will get fired as happens every year…if I were to guess, I’d say that the Jags, Raiders, and maybe even Cowboys have a better than 50/50 chance of firing their coaches. That would make 6 openings, which is about average each year. So between the Bears, Saints, Jets, and some or all of Jags (still have a franchise QB type though he may have underwhelmed so far), Raiders (poor team but great history and cache) and the Cowboys (no brand is bigger), I’d say the Jets HC role is towards the bottom of that list. Honestly I really think we do have some decent young talent in guys like GW, Breece, the Q brothers, Sauce, etc. We are not a bare bones roster I don’t think…we’re playing like we are but I really think a huge part of that is coaching. This roster needs work, especially still on OL and WR if we don’t resign Adams to a better deal, but there are wins in this roster. I just think our culture of losing sucks so hard, and our owner is an imbecile that I still see this role at the bottom of the list. The other openings have better teams, more storied franchises, better QB options, and don’t have quite the shit culture we have that seems to suck the life out of everyone who comes here. A guy like Johnson will have options. He ain’t choosing the Jets unless we pay double or triple the going rate…money always talks, but even still, I just don’t see it.
