I've been going to shows again recently, caught the Soulfly show last night and had a good time. Best set was Eyehategod by a mile. they brought it and the whole place lost their shit. Grimy fuckers, I met Mike Williams at the second stage after their set and talked to him for a bit. Crowbar and Mutilation Barbecue had good sets too. I've never been a fan of Soulfly although I loved Sepultura and Nailbomb. Max is 5 years older than me and looks like he's in his 60s. Really generic set where he told everybody to jump up and down every song. One act that stood out on the second stage was Skinflint, which was a couple of normal looking black dudes on bass and drums and this ratty little thrasher dude on the axe. They had great energy and sounded good. I bought one of their shirts just because of their set.
Have 2 tickets for tonight that I bought 3 seconds after they went on sale . Regretfully have them on StubHub because I can’t make it up from sc. so glad I got to see him at msg in 2016, but I know this was most likely the last chance to ever see him play again. Damn it to hell
A lot of distortion with Eyehatergod that kind of bothered me, and I never could get into #18's vocal style. I'm glad he's in Pittsburgh. Actually, I'm surprised he's still alive.
They initially used to turn me off because their production sound was so filthy but they grew on me. Then again I'm all about the doom/sludge/stoner rock so they sound more normal to me.
Favorite Wacken performance Buried @ 26 minutes flat. Hypocrisy was so good that if you take out the crowd noise, the music is almost identical to the studio album.
Abducted is a good place to start. If you can get into Hypocrisy, that's the album that will do it. Edit: actually, don't listen to me on that. Abducted was the one that got me but I was looking for intense albums at the time. They differed their sound a bit over the years and there might be some later stuff that is compelling to you.
Saw Royal Thunder play tonight and met Mlny Parsonz. Her voice is incredible, but added to that is she is a great performer. The set was so good and deserved more people to hear it, but some dumbfuck 90s cover band had the main stage and the promotion sucked.
Sabbath, The Misfits and Black Flag are the 3 main influences and they really come out. They are a New Orleans gutter trash punk-stoner fusion band, really. And awesome at it.
I didn't even know who they were, and I saw tickets went on sale almost a year ago I was like "wtf?"... Friends were tripping and said they are a must see, but it sold out quick. A friend had an extra ticket, so I bought the beer. ("cheap seats" up top... but we just wandered around and got as close as we could) Pretty sick show, and they definitely have a following...
I'm going to see this band play in a couple of weeks. They look like some kind of Disney alumni girl band but they can fucking shred. It's mostly punk rock but there's other influences in there. I don't even know why they did this song but they basically pulled off a pro-level doom song,
