I think Rex would have been the best option for this team heading into the 2024 season. The largest issue with Rex was not having the QB. During the time he was here we had 2 AFC Championship game seasons, 2 8-8 season, and 2 losing seasons. Also the team went as the talent went IMO. The 2012 and 2014 teams were doomed from the start. 2009 and 2010 the Jets overachieved. 2011 the Jets underachieved and 2013 the overachieved with Geno. I do not believe if we had a different head coach we would have done any better those 6 years, in all likelihood far worse. Sanchez was not even a top 15 QB while Rex was there. We never got to see Rex with a QB. We could have seen him with a QB this year but we didn't do it. If Rodgers is coming back I would be ok with Rex getting a shot with him. If Rodgers is not then probably not as I think Rex having to start with a new QB would not be optimal and he would be entering a situation probably worse than what he left.
I am not for bringing Rex back under any circumstances in any time frame, but. But but but... If you're going to do it, you start fresh. You don't stick them in there with Aaron Rodgers for one year, and then have him have to be involved with a new GM hire - we've seen that movie before. That is just compounding all the mistakes they've made over the past 10 years. So if I have to be saddled with him again, it is when everything starts fresh.
See if I knew he had a QB I would be all for it. If the Jets have to start fresh it will start off slow. Jets have a losing season and then fans turn on Rex fast when its not his fault.
Eh. Woody hasn’t forced him to build a completely dogshit offensive line including three first round draft picks and a second rounder on top of it. Woody also didn’t force him to dismantle the defensive line that was tops in the league. Trade JFM, let Huff and Quinton Jefferson walk (Sheldon Rankins the year before), trade for Reddick. I also don’t think Woody forced him to sign Lazard or Lazard had anything to do with the Aaron Rodgers stuff. We were receiver deficient because Douglas couldn’t help his resource allocation on the lines and Lazard was the top guy available in an awful receiver FA class. Don’t think Mike Williams is on Woody either. Adams, Rodgers and Hackett are on Woody. Boyle and Randall Cobb were but they were such minimal pieces. The fact that they got run time is more a testament to the lack of players we had in depth than it is Woody being a douchebag.
It's not necessarily Rex that fans are clamoring for, but the culture he represents. If you watch the pre and post game shows, the players appearing on various YouTube channels, they are all Rex's guys, and they all still bleed green 20 years later. The team hasn't had that since.
Come to think of it, I haven't heard a single thing about it. I'm half convinced that he already resigned and there's no reason for anyone to know about it.
Rex was good in 2009 and 2010. By the time the Bills fired him, he was washed. And that was several years ago. He's mega-washed now.
^Shonn Green taking a nap in the EZ against the Cheats, epic photo of Wes Welker later cleaning out his locker. Sigh.
Please no. Rex stinks. The moment Manginis roster deteriorated so did Rexs ability to win games. The guy still thinks you can play offense by running the ball 50 times a game with 6 OL.
When I say I want Rex back, it's mainly because it doesn't seem to matter who coaches this shit-show. The results are always the same. At least Rex gave us... - 2 AFCCG appearances - Best ever season of Hard Knocks ("slap-dick team" LOL) - The most epic win ever over a highly favored Patriots team in the playoffs - Some teams that played with swagger - A guy who sincerely believed he would take the team to the SB If there are better options that are realistic, let's hear 'em.
Just some food for thought... The movie we have seen before in 2008 is a team with some decent talent, an aging but capable 40 yr old QB, and a useless coaching staff unable to get anything out of them. Sounds a little like 2024. So we brought in a fire brand coach in 2009, added to the talent, but parted ways with the veteran QB in order to start a bad rookie? Best defense in the league by far in 2009 and the best run game with way better Oline than what we have currently, thanks to bringing in the right coach. If we keep Favre with Rex in that window i think the team has a Super Bowl. Sanchez was the weak link. I wouldn't suggest bringing in a win now type coach and reaching for a QB again in the draft again to start without competition. Doing the opposite would be trying something new, doing the prior would be the movie we have seen. Not every situation needs a tear down. In fact a tear down is usually about the most pointless thing a GM can do, coz its about the GM trying to buy themselves time which they won't reach anyway without any result. Thanks JD. Whoever the next GM is, please do the opposite of JD.
If you can name me a better option at Head Coach who has the following Criteria: 1) Has substantial experience as an NFL Coach 2) Would actually consider coming to the Jets I am all ears. In my mind, no one better meets these criteria than Rex Ryan.
At this point there is enough noise about Rex that I fully expect Woody to bring him back. Like HSS says, he's at least a candidate that wants to work for the Jets and has experience, not a common occurrence. At this point it is more favorable to me than whatever bad rookie HC they hire. Nobody wants to be the conductor for Woody's toy train set. Just another loud exploding Jets failure though, of that I have no doubt.
To be clear, I don't want Rex back, I love the guy, just think it would be a disaster The only thing that has me think about it is that the current crop of QBs are a lower class intellectually than the QBs from the 2000's-2010s IMO (Brady, Brees, Manning, Roethlisberger etc) so they may have a hard time reading his D and blitz packages? Its a small thought (as are most of mine) but thats about it for me
