Just figured I would take a stab at the head coach question.

On the GM front what would you guys think about bringing back Tanny?

It wasn't a bad stab, and more along the lines at what I'm personally expecting at least.

Frank Reich might be another vet coach name and situation type that could potentially surface.

The Jets blew this massively. During the off-season this was a super attractive job. Now it is not. This would be starting with a rebuild. I think Vrabel would have come here a few months ago but not now.

The one guy that I think would be the ideal fit if Rodgers comes back is Pete Carrol. Carrol still wants to coach and it would make sense for him to come here for a year or two and try to win. The last thing I want is another coordinator with no head coaching experience. We have done that for the last decade and have had no success.

From what I understand Carrol wants to coach still. He was not offered any jobs or interest so he is teaching at college now. I'm pretty sure if the Jets gave him a call today he would show up.

I just don't really see how they would effectively package and sell a Carroll hiring as being a big problem solver. Being a defensive guy it's just doesn't gel with the Rodgers team build imo. I mean at best he comes in and hires his own guy in the "Hackett helper" search we talked about last offseason but never followed through on, and while again making no real whole sale changes for that 2025 season.

After that we are likely looking at a 2026 blow up and rebuild. At which point he'll be 75 if you are really making a hire here while looking beyond 2025 and while ideally aiming at a legit build a new culture effort.

If it were only that easy. It would take a lot of talks/negotiations and then it's still no guarantee. But yeah the Jets should swing big.

My biggest concern remains who would want to take a job on this team with Woody as the owner? We won't attract the best GM or HC candidates unless Woody is willing to throw A LOT of money at them or if he's willing to be explicitly clear sticking with the organizational structure and not making decisions the GM should (i.e. firing the HC) and the HC should (i.e. forcing LaFleur to be fired). He needs to hire his guys and let them do their jobs. He can have opinions and questions but he has to understand where the line is drawn.
There's no way JD was okay with going surpassing him to fire Saleh and to fire his right hand man Rex Hogan.

Short of Woody firing the team, these are the changes he needs to be clear about making when looking for the next regime.

Yeah good points…JD had to negotiate hard for a 6 year deal as he knew he was walking into a complete tear down and rebuild and it would take time. The strategy was on point; the execution was shit. JD just whiffed on too many early round players with Zach, Becton, Mims, Moore, etc. Had he hit on players the rebuild would have worked, and he wouldn’t have had to pivot to the Hail Mary of bringing in Rodgers.

So the next GM would be looking at something similar…there are a few good young pieces to build around still…guys like the Williams brothers, Sauce, JJ, GW, Breece, it’s a better talent base than what JD walked into. However, the issue is that a bunch of these guys will be coming up on contracts and we may not be able to keep them all.

But much like JD had to push hard for 6 years, the next GM I’m sure will push hard for not only time but authority to hire/fire his coaches and staff without meddling from the brainiac Woody. Not sure how that works when he’s the owner and can basically do whatever he wants.

So yah, gonna be hard to find a highly qualified guy

Tear down and rebuild is so nauseatingly overused here. It doesn’t take 4-5 years to do. This isn’t Major League Baseball and the Pittsburgh Pirates operating on a ten year plan to get back to competitiveness.

The NFL is built for teams to at least get back to the playoffs in a decent timeframe with the draft and free agency structure.

The Jets brass either directly or indirectly has infused this terminology into the fan base. Look at “rebuilds” that have happened including the 2016 to 2017 Rams, 2018 to 2019 49ers, 2010 to 2011 49ers, 2022 to 2023 Texans, etc.

Yes, there’s usually bad regimes beforehand, years of losing and then an almost instanteous switch to winning when the right organizational decisions are made. The fact that we haven’t had that happen after 15 relative years of losing tells you all you need to know about this regimes choices.

They should bring in Carrol as a consultant tomorrow. Didn’t Ulbrich coach for him in Seattle.
Whoever they bring in has to completely change culture.

Doug Peterson after he gets fired in Jacksonville might end up being a decent option fit.

I think Stefansky would be a good shout, but we need to sort out our coordinators. If you look at our last good team (09/10) we had the best special teams coach in the business (Westhoff), the best offensive line coach (Bill Callahan), with Rex being one of the best defensive minds.

Regardless of who we bring in, we need to make sure the quality of coaches around them improves significantly.

Interesting with Doug Pedersen, if he gets fired from Jacksonville…I know he was a backup QB at GB, but not sure if he backed up Favre or Rodgers or both. But wonder if there is a relationship with him and Rodgers?

they never played together and he’s in Andy Reid tree so no connection to Rodgers at all.

Pederson’s connection here is with Joe Douglas, who God willing, wil be fired himself soon

Should have fired Saleh in the off season and went and got Jim Harbaugh the moment they could. What a mess we're in now.

Pete Carroll as a coach or executive (probably the latter at this point) is a great option for rebuilding the team culture.

Stefanski would be an interesting choice. Not sure if Doug Pederson potentially on to his 3rd team as HC is a good idea. Jacksonville is seriously underachieving.

Call me crazy, but I'm not afraid of taking a swing at another coordinator. A retread isn't a sure thing either. Not that I'm opposed to one, but I'd keep a more open mind.

But it doesn't matter if Woody doesn't change how he operates. Short of selling the team, his overstepping on decisions and being clear about that with hires is the only chance this franchise has a shot

Rex Ryan might be the only guy with any sort of past success that would take the job. He’s a shitty coach imo but he does bring an attitude and mindset adjustment that the jets desperately need.

I think it’s pretty clear that a coaching change is needed…this team has pretty much given up

There was NO excuse losing that game yesterday to a one win team. None.

I rather drag myself over coals than have Rex Ryan back as the coach of this team. He blows.
