I loved Keyshawn. Sometimes you need a guy with attitude, and he had one. But he had ultimate respect for Parcells and gave it his all for him... Favorable.
Key was a great character. The Jets are alright now without him (Coles, J-Mac, Cotch) but there were some lean years.
KJ was a good, not great reciever, but I was glad to see him go. Who did he bash in his book? Chrebet and O'Donnell, right? Two white guys. the year he was traded he invited something like 24 of his ex-jet team mates when we went to Tampa that year. Not one was a white guy. Sorry, KJ was something of an anti-white biased guy. I think as he grew up and matured, he got over some of that, but while he was here, I saw him as a selfish derisive force on this team. I was very happy to see him go.
He was a good receiver. He never lived up to the hype as being the number 1 overall pick though. He was always just a cut below the elite WR's in the game. I have a pretty favorable view on him looking back though. He was not a bust... just not "all that."
And the other point was that he was never as good as he thought he was. This is another good one. On the field, I can't see ANYTHING to argue against a favorable impression - he was the best player on those Jets teams. Off the field, he was clearly selfish, and I think TBJ has a very valid point about how he chose his targets. If this poll had been taken 5 years ago, I definitely would have gone unfavorable, but time heals wounds. Ultimately, especially given that when he left the Jets got two first round picks for him I'll go with favorable.
How does 2 Pro-Bowls in 4 seasons not live up to the hype of being selected 1st overall? He justified it, backed it up, and played great as a Jet. Easily my favorite Jets receiver of all-time. Clutch on 3rd down, could count on Key anytime, had a swagger/attitude, and a gamer every week. His whole "Meshawn" term and the way he left New York did hurt his image with some Jets fans, the whole idea of wanting to get paid and threatened to hold out and whatnot, fine...But that moment still doesn't make me forget how valuable he was with the matchup problems he posed and how great he was as a Jet. Favorable without a doubt.
This coming from you is weird. Keyshawn was a big part of your Super Bowl run and he did backup his contract and what the Bucs gave up, producing a Pro-Bowl season and a Super Bowl. Gruden is the cancer. Players badmouth him like nothing. Keyshawn, McCardell, Simeon Rice, Charles Woodson, some other Raiders and Bucs i'm missing as well. Key was a complete Wide Receiver, except the elite speed. But he changed blocking for WR's, to me he was the guy who brought that to the NFL as a WR...Tough, and good in the run game.
Keyshawn was a winning player on the Jets. Blocked fantastically, caught the ball. Nothing not to like. Didn't like the Chrebet stuff but as far as his playing, no complaints. Just watch the Jets/Jacksonville playoff game, where he even had a pick.

I watched Gruden piss away Key's abilities. they put him in the slot alot cuz they knew he wasnt a burner. they threw to him on short routes cuz they knew he had good hands. he shouldve been split out alot more, he was used wrong in TB. believe it. now was he an asshole in Tampa? yes, he was alot worse off the field in tampa than he was in NY. which is probably why ill always have a favorable opinion of him. twice the cancer as TO? thats pushing it.
It's still pains me that if Peyton Manning came out after his Jr. year we would have drafted him instead of Keyshawn.
Nope - Johnson was drafted in 1996, Manning would have come out in 1997 as a junior and instead came out in 1998.
It still pains me that if Peyton came out we would have paired Peyton with Keyshawn who was drafted the year before. What a combo that would have been.. How can anyone be unfavorable to Keyshawn, he was a great Jets WR which we turned into 2 first round draft picks. One of them being Pennington, while not drafted with one of the picks obtained fromTB but certainly would not have been drafted if we didn't have those picks.
I agree with this. I loved the book, loved the cockiness and loved the way he came in here. If anyone remembers how downtrodden the Jets were when he got here, he was the first thing we really had to hang our hat on in the way of a good player. I didn't like the Chrebet stuff, either, but we're talking about a 23-year-old rookie at the time. And I do think race is a reason a lot of people didn't like him, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. On the field he was money in the red zone, money on third down, a good blocker as people have pointed out, and the bigger the game the bigger he played. We never have replaced him and I still wear my #19 to the games.
