In your opinion, and trying to be as honest as possible, how do you think Jets fans are percieved as a fan base by the rest of the NFL community? In other words if a poll was conducted accross all NFL fans that asked people to rank other teams fans in areas like: 1. passion for their team 2. supporting the team through good AND bad (bandwagoners) 3. chants/songs or gimmicks 4. respect for other teams fans 5. knowledge of the game etc how would you say we rate? As a fairly new fan and living half a world away I'm just trying to get a greater feeling for all this. Thanks
Hmm i never really put much thought into how we were viewed by the NFL community. I would say we are known for passion for our team and the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS chant.
Scale of 1-10: 1. passion for their team-- 9, would be a 10, but the people who leave early ruin that... 2. supporting the team through good AND bad (bandwagoners)-- 9.5, we've had so much bad, and we still stick by our Jets 3. chants/songs or gimmicks-- 7, we have J-E-T-S, but that's all... We're not gay like the Bears with their dumb songs... 4. respect for other teams fans-- 4, we generally just don't if we disagree with them... Sprouts from all the passion 5. knowledge of the game etc-- 6.5, we have a hell of a lot of smart fans, and much more realistic non-homer fans than most teams (that being because the nature of New Yorkers seems to be pessimistic), but we have our share of clueless jerks..
I'm a fairly young fan so maybe I'm not the best judge but I would say #2 and #3 are things we would be "known for". Obviously with #3 we have the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets chant. With #2 we have no reason to have bandwagon fans. When you haven't reached a Superbowl in over 30 years you usually don't have bandwagon fans
I think there are passionate fans for evey team in the league, but most fan bases are so ignorant of the fans of other teams, even in their own division, that you will always get a low score for something like this.
maybe also approach the question from a players point of view. If players were polled (anonymously) what team would they most envy because of their fans?
J-E-T-S JETS JEST JETS may not be very imaginitive, but it is one of the most recognised chants in the NFL. I have to give it a 9, based on fame alone. Even the national sportscasters use it often. As far as fan base, most people think we are pretty passionate, given our last championship was in 1969. There are few bandwagoners in Jets camp. Most Jets fans are realists, if not mostly darksiders. A lot of other teams have pretty clueless fans that just don't know much about football. We are one of the most disrespected teams around. All the experts and most of the fans said we'de be the worst team in the league this past year. So: Passion: 8 Support: 8 Chants: We only have the one, but it may be the most famous, so it gets a 9 Respect?: Chit.... 3 maybe, at least for our division rivals. This is a backlash symptom. Knowledge: Average... a 5. As I sit watching our arch rivals dismantle the Indy Colts, on their way to another Super Bowl.....
The Jets would land somewhere in the middle. Jets fans don't always back the team regardless the way some other cities do. this year, we had some disappontment in terms of crowd noise at home in big games. Some cities are famous for being loud, like Kansas City, Seattle, Dallas.... we aint one of em. As far as the players.... they want the $ first.... at least most do.... then they want to win. fan support comes in around 5th or so is my guess.
Based on the attitude of this place after a win (too optimistic) or a loss (way too pesimistic) it is safe to say we have quite the fairweather fanbase. I don't think there's any way we can deny that...
Alot of people on this board will fall under fair weather fans because everytime they lost this season they wanted Penningtons head but when they won they never said how good Pennington played. The only thing that dissapoints me about Jet Fans is leaving early at games especially at wins.
I agree the complaining is like watching a weather vane, but Jets fans generally stick it out. Even if they turn to the dark side, they are still Jets fans. If they were fair weather fans, they would have jumped ship a long time ago.
1. passion for their team--10...who else can root for futility like a jets fan? everyone and their mother knows that at some point in the season heartbreak ensues. i think theres a little masochist in every jets fan. 2. supporting the team through good AND bad (bandwagoners)--8...more often than not, we suck. this recent stretch of good fortune (barring last seasons injury riddled year) we have more down years than up. we havent won a SB since 69....i think the only other fans that really plow ahead with their team are in philly. theyve NEVER won the bowl. but they support that team like they have 5. (and to talk to an eagles fan, youd think they did). 3. chants/songs or gimmicks--8...how cool is the jets chant? very. 4. respect for other teams fans--4...ny based team. the only fans that are viewed worse than NY in football are in oak, and in philly. 5. knowledge of the game--5...i have no clue so ill go middle of the road. from my experience with this site, id say we have some really knowledgable fans, and some wack jobs. i dont think the wacky ones out number the smarties, but sometimes it seems close. now if you ask a phin fan....1. i would think that around the nfl jets fans have to be looked at as a top 10 fanbase. but im a little biased. no?
I don't think there are many teams that stand out for having particularly great fans. The Packers are at the top. Then I'd say the Steelers. After that, it's a mess. Philly fans are knows for being the biggest assholes but everyone talks about how smart they are about football too. Chicago, New England, and Dallas all have good fan bases but also have massive bandwagons of fairweather fans. I think Jets fans get a little more credit for loyalty because a lot of people's mentality is that if you are from NY/NJ then you should automatically like the Giants.
Not so knowledgeable, TBJ! I think the numbers people are giving tend to be too high. I think the Jets and their fans are objects of ridicule in the AFC, and completely ignored in the NFC, because of the lack of success of the team for so long. I think most out of towners think the NYC area is Giants country, not Jets country, in part because of the whole stadium thing. Also, the problems the Jets had in getting the stadium they wanted does not speak to a passionate fan base (and I was against the WSS, by the way). Thus, even if we can make an argument for how passionate Jets fans are for sticking with a bad team, I think other fans wouldn't view it that way at all. After all, does anyone here think of Arizona Cardinals fans as the best fans in the NFL? Didn't think so. Someone asked about what players think. SI had a poll last week asking players which city had the best-looking fans. The answers were what you'd expect - warm weather where the girls don't wear much (Miami, San Diego, etc.). They also asked what team they'd like to play for other than their own. "Coincidentally" enough, the top 5 were exactly the same top 5 cities that answered the first question. That's what players think about - $$$ and chicks.
Mostly we seem to be a bit manic depressive going from "OMG we are superbowl bound" to "OMG we are the suckiest team in existence", often within the same sentence.
Well, I'm showing my age but I go back to Namath and Al woodall as backup. So I have seen some pretty bad teams. The sack exchange years were fun. Klecko was just tremendous.
Well I think the fire some fans started during at a MNF game vs the Bills at the M/lands will always be a black eye to the NYJ nation & most FB fans who remember that incident have a negative effect for a loooooooooong time on the NYJs & its fans
Since moving to Atlanta from New York the perception is that most other fans see us as a bunch of loser nit - wits who continue to support a 2nd rate football team. That's the perception, from opposing fans, players, coaches and the media, including OUR media! We're unintelligent, bear drinking, violent idiots. They feel the same way about Giants fans but that they have a LOT more class than Jets fans. Many feel that we are VERY PASSIONATE about our JETS to a fault and to the point of being delusional and don't know a damn thing about football which is evident by the fact that we root for the Jets, and many other fans feel sorry for us. People say hey your from New York how about them Giants or the Giants blew another one, they ASSUME because I'm a Yankees fan I'm a Giants fan some totally forget there are 2 football teams that carry the New York name in the state, and when I tell them I'm a Jets fan, the response normally is, "Oh, I'm sorry, yuck, yuck yuck!!!" I tell them to KICK ROCKS!!!! Just the reality fellas, you leave the Metro New York area and this is how people feel about New York sports fans PERIOD. I believe the only other fans they feel are as bad if not worse are Philadelphia fans. Now from MY personal perspective, not just Jets fans but ALL New York fans are SPOILED and there's NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, but sometimes we can take it too far. Some fans are not REALISTIC in their approach to the science and art of the sporting events they follow. they tend to be more passionate than intelligent about their particular TEAM than how the games work, hence the knock on us as fans. But then again that can be said for MOST fans. The reality is the word FAN is short for FANATIC, so.,, Who cares what they think!
Oh geez, alot of Jet fans are awful. Just look at some of the posts on this site before the New England playoff game. Plus, alot of those fans who go to the draft with those Jet construction hats on, or the helmets with the Jet Planes on top. Just embarrassing.
