I don’t think you can ever prioritize outside runs or inside runs. Both have a place in an offense. 2 problems I see… Confused blocking schemes. There are a lot of guys ending up unblocked. I’m not even talking about missed blocks as much as I am saying combo blocks where the lineman that pushes up just never gets there. It doesn’t matter what scheme you run, this is mostly a reality. The tackle is not getting up to the backer. The concept is help the guard, push off and push up. The advancing blocker doesn’t need to take the backers head off, he just needs to get in his way really. In outside zone blocking, you get the defenders running horizontally and then let their momentum push dictate where you push them and the back cuts off of it. We’re trying to run an inside zone blocking scheme where we have 4/5 guys that are suited for man blocking and we have man blocking principals intertwined in the zone concepts. It’s very confused. Number two is predictability. I watch on Sundays and call out every run play. First downs under center are runs. Breece Hall runs outside runs. Allen runs inside runs. Shotgun runs are called into heavy boxes. It’s just awful. I’ll toss a bonus in there - Tippman sucks and our line is getting zero push. Tippman is not a center and I never see him communicating. Maybe this is the reason our schemes are confused? He shares some of the blame while Hackett and friends share the majority. But your center needs to call the concepts out. He needs to identify the MIKE too.
This is a great post, and honestly this is what sticks out to me more than our OL just getting dominated by force (other than Tippman, who just looks bad honestly). I’m watching veterans like Tyron just letting guys by while double teaming another guy with Simpson. The trademark of our OL is the fact they’re mostly old and/or recovering from injury. These are not very athletic guys at this point, so a running game designed to have G’s and T’s pulling a lot is not helping our cause. On top of that, they just don’t seem to understand the blocking concepts, or the concepts are bad, or both.
I'm pretty sure they understand the concepts, it's the ability to execute them that I think is the issue. As you noted, these guys are mostly older vets, playing with years of injuries big and small, and they simply aren't as agile as they once were. Asking them to execute a blocking scheme that requires quickness and agility is divorced from reality. It shows a CS that insists on force fitting players into their scheme, instead of designing a scheme that fits with the players strengths...they measure their "success" on the paper their plans and schemes are drawn up on, rather than the actual results on the field. A good HC would've seen this even if he didn't know the X's and O's of offense and told them to change things or would've gotten new coaches who would. I think there's a lot to be said for making things simple and easy to execute, and then practicing them to perfection. Even if the other team knows what you're going to do, if you do it well you'll be hard to stop. The Jets continue to show no identity on offense, something lacking for decades. It shows how little thought and emphasis they put on that side of the ball. No wonder they continue to lose.
Yeah this is something the Belichick Patriots always did well, specifically with regards to fundamentals. Bill stressed the importance of practicing the fundamentals to perfection - blocking, catching, tackling, etc. He also consistently had teams that could play hard the entire game because they did a ton of sprints and other cardio work in practice. Again, base fundamentals.
There was another successful coach who had the same philosophy - you might've heard of him - Lombardi designed the Power Sweep and made it a staple of his offense. He didn't care whether the other team knew what was coming because he made the Packers practice so hard that they could execute it against anyone under any conditions. I'm not saying the Jets should revert to that basic necessarily, but if worked for the guy whose name in on the SB Trophy it should work for the Jets.
Just for the record. This seems to work, some voodoo s—t or something. Saleh was fired hours later. Who knew Arthur brown was the key all along.
Have we ever invested so much into a position group and gotten so little in return? It's unbelievable how bad our OL still is after all the draft picks and other acquisitions.
How does he still have a fucking job here? This OL is fucking atrocious Smith looks like a stiff letting guys run around him. Holding calls all up and down the line. Bullshit false starts and illegal formations This is such a badly coached unit
