Saleh walked the plank. Saleh's firing supposedly will fix what's wrong the Jets? It's obvious to everybody that Hackett is the problem with the offense and Keith Carter is the problem with the running game, but both are still employed why? What happens on MNF if the offense is still as boring and stale as its been for the last several years? You better believe those in attendance will unload on Hackett. I'm sure that will piss off Rodgers as he's the only ally Hackett has left on the CS. Will that force Ulbrich to reduce Hackett's play calling and risk alienating the future HOF old guy? What would be the point of bringing in DA if the OL still cannot execute Carter's new blocking scheme? Rodgers will not survive the year getting hit at the present rate so again, why does Carter still have a job? This entire episode can't possibly be over unless this was nothing other than a PR move engineered to keep the fanbase from going into a full fledged revolt. If the offense still sucks on MNF, the fanbase really should unleash all the frustration and fury in the form of chants. Really loud ones. So loud that not only will Hackett hear it, but Rodgers will also hear it and so will anyone watching the game on TV. This was just a media move as long as the real problems have not been addressed. Its up to the fans not to let Woody get away again with another BS move if things don't improve. As far as Aaron Rodgers' feelings are concerned? WGAF!!!
Agreed. But, I'm willing to wait to see if any duties will be changed in the offensive coaching, before I jump ship. Don't know much about Todd Downing, but he's had experience calling plays. If Brick keeps things status quo, there's no reason to think anything will change. It's obvious the AR/Hackett scheme, together with Carter's inept OL schemes, aren't working with an older AR, & these players... So, I can only hope Brick is his own man, & will make some changes. Thus, no comment til the time limit is up... .
They might suck but as long as there is a commitment to tweak things every week until they don’t suck..that is far better than Mr. WeAreGonnaKeepDoingWhatWe’veBeenDoing.
Player execution has to get better. Poor blocking, dropped passes, confusion on which routes to run, penalties…improving all of that will help overcome shit play calling. Resolving shit play calling ain’t happening.
I'd have to assume that Hackett is on a tight leash at this point. Another debacle against Buffalo and I don't doubt that Ulbrich will elevate Downing to be the playcaller, assuming that it doesn't happen before Monday night.
Downing is garbage too, like all of our offensive hires. Pun intended I guess. In his two years at TN his O went from 15 to 28. He was similarly useless with the Raiders. Kind of a tangent, but for all those calling for Vrabel to take over- Downing and Carter were running his O.
If the offense sucks we will be no worse off but hopefully one step closer to getting rid of Hackett too. I can still vividly remember eviscerating his dad Paul on a weekly basis for throwing every 3rd down 4 yards short of the sticks and expecting the WR to break 2 tackles.
I’m not advocating for Downing but they lost Tannehill before he fell off a cliff and also played 6 playoff teams in their last 7 games when they went on a bad losing streak. More of a defense of Vrabel than it is Downing and Carter for what it’s worth.
Gulp... so I did a search "Todd Downing success." One of the first hits--> https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl...r-chance-play-caller/95ba6cd1722bbfd64aad5799 Gulp... .
It probably will but I'm glad Saleh is gone. You need a good coach in the NFL to be successful. It became extremely clear he was not a good head coach, he was worse than a JAG. He chose not to address the key problems with the team, and the players walked all over him. My last memory of Saleh will be laughing at a player, in the broncos game, who was a nano second away from getting a personal foul with crap after the whistle. The camera caught him behind it, he looked concerned there was going to be a PF. As soon as it wasn't he looked at the player and smiled/laughed. Officer good vibes. I wish I remember the time and play, but all I remember was his shit eating grin. I wrote it when it happened in the game day thread.
The real problem is these guys have only played together for 5 games. Don't care how good you are you can't build a solid offense with such little time together. Offense is like construction, it takes time to do it right. Defense is like destruction, much easier to do. I really don't expect the offense to get much better before mid-season if then.
Because Woody was too dumb not to fire Saleh, Hack, and Carter in the offseason. Who will be the OL coach now without Carter? They can just demote Hack and have Downing call the plays, basically be a glorified OC like he was in GB, where he did fine. The problem is that Downing sucks too, he is no MLF. The point is, while Saleh could have been easily replaced by Ulbrich from within, there is no one to bring to help now on the offensive side to replace these guys.
The simple answer to just about all of your questions is that a wholesale removal of all or most of the offensive coaches would be too much of a burden to overcome mid-season. The change has been made at the top and now it is up to Ulbrich to decide where he needs to tweak things and where he needs to swing an axe. Two minutes into last season the Jets hierarchy chose to concede the season, they should have made big changes nine months ago but at least they are showing now that they are not as willing to sacrifice another season just hopin' and dreamin'. Monday night doesn't really matter, one week is too soon to see much change but I think by the bye we'll know a whole lot more about how productive or futile this change will be. Most of the games between now and then were looking like losses anyway. I don't see Rodgers or Adams as being here long enough to be key components of any great future success so the best way to handle them is by saving whatever might be spent on them. There are a handful of players here it would be a mistake to lose based on money paid to guys whose best years are in the past. Unfortunately, I don't see Joe Douglas as the guy to make the important decisions; he had his chances, picked up a few draft choices but has a miserable record to show for it. He owns the coaching staff and should be gone by season's end.
Theres a very good chance it will still suck. The only hope I have is that the offense (entire team?) takes on the persona of the HC. Saleh was a mopey moron on the sideline and has always been extremely conservative. Maybe Ulbrich can change that mentality? My biggest fear was this team going 10-7, getting bounced in the 1st round of the playoffs and then them running it back with JD and Saleh. At least half of the brain trust is gone.
The hope is that Ulbrich really coaches like he has nothing to lose, because theoretically he doesn’t. So if Hackett and Downing are sucking their usual balls, he’ll hold them accountable and get involved to affect change without regard for giving a fuck what Rodgers thinks or what Woody would do. Whether it’s a chance to take over as the coach here next year, interview for other head coaching jobs or a new DC job, Ulbrich is coaching for a job next year. That’s a good thing for this team this year. That’s the only hope we really got.
