After all of the investment in the defensive line, the 49ers exposed what might truly be the weakness of this team and defense which is the lack of beef at defensive tackle. In the past couple of years, we had a 290 pound hybrid defensive end JFM manning the edge on obvious running downs. We had veteran defensive tackles Sheldon Rankins (2022) and Quinton Jefferson (2023) that understood how to play both run and pass at the same time. Those supplemental pieces allowed the Jets to run the 4-2-5 AND Quinnen Williams to just be a penetrating 3T. All those pieces are gone and replaced with a shitty Michael Clemons and disappointing Javon Kinlaw. I posted earlier in camp that linebacker might be an issue, but now it looks like defensive tackle might be a glaring hole for this squad. Oh and Sherwood sucks so even when we have 3LB’s on the field, it doesn’t help stop the run. We need to get another linebacker on the field, limit the wide 9 alignment from our ends and might need Q to stop trying to shoot gaps and play nose tackle.
Maybe Leonard Taylor will get a shot if this continues. He's a 300-pounder. Yeah, Sherwood just runs around and has no impact, put in Zaire Barnes.
Agree. Barnes was ruled out last night with an injury (ankle maybe?). Hopefully it's not serious. Sherwood can hit the pine.
Barnes in on IR. We could have had the 1983 Bears personnel out there and it would have made no difference since the defensive gameplan was horrifying in its lack of efficiency. Saleh and company should be embarrassed and ashamed and they would be if they had any sense. The structure of the defense that allowed SF to counter with Deebo on Ashtyn--can a DC or whoever is running the defense do any worse that that? They couldn't see that SF could adjust in that way? Saying they should be fired is stating the obvious--that they should never have been given such authority is the reality.
Through one game, a DT who can play the run effectively might be their biggest need. They replaced Al Woods with a couple DTs who are not even close to the run defenders he was. They're gonna need to scheme better, change up personnel, or sign or explore a trade. Especially if Hasson Reddick isn't coming back anytime to soon to help on the edge
Yup… Look, it’s one game against a Super Bowl team, traveling to the west coast, which is never easy. That said, our DL is hurting…happiest guy right now? Hassan Reddick. I’m sure he was sitting at home watching and smiling the entire time. Clemons is not a starter. JJ is good but he’s not THE guy yet…he needs someone on the other side getting attention. Saw McDonald on the field but didn’t seem like he made much of an impact. Our DL is supposed to the be the strength of this D and it looked poor last night.
I read that Quinnen lined up at DE for some snaps to avoid him being double teamed. Didn't see if it made a difference.
You pretty much nailed it. We could have had Jefferson for half the price of Kinlaw but wouldn't pick up his call asking to match. I don't see an easy fix. I know this was 49ers, etc, but I just think other teams will exploit this DLine as well as lack of talent is the problem. Losing Huff, Jefferson, Woods, and JFM is making a big difference. Their replacements are of lower quality.
I only noticed that in the first quarter, but it was kind of effective. They were talking about it after he knocked Purdy on his ass.
IR. Think he could come back beginning week 5 though. From what I've seen/read on him, his run defense hasn't been great but he is a big body at least!
You can’t fault a single player for Monday’s game when the coach’s gameplan was so obviously poor. That was hands down one of the worst original gameplan, lack of adjustments, lack of clock management, lack of awareness, and lack of leadership that I’ve seen. We could have gone in there without a coaching staff at all and been better off
Bingo! The NFL is nothing if not a copycat league. Every single team the Jets face, going forward, is going to start their biggest and bad assed RB they have on their roster and they are going to run right down the middle until the game is over or the Jets stop it. Knowing what we know about the Jets coaching staff and their complete utter lack of adjustments, you can essentially guarantee that is going to be the offensive modus operandi of every offense this team faces the rest of the year.
